The Na vinyastikākṛtasya Sutta — Vinaya Piṭaka
Background
Na vinyastikākṛtasya is a disciplinary rule belonging to the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Early Buddhist Theravāda tradition. This rule concerns the discipline of monks and nuns and the rules for official actions in the Sangha. The name “Na vinyastikākṛtasya” (Nā vinyastikākṛtasya) means “what has not been clearly established” or “actions not established according to proper official procedure.”
The Vinaya Piṭaka in general was compiled to protect the spiritual independence and discipline of the Sangha, as well as to educate the Buddha’s disciples. Its purpose is to maintain the purity, harmony, and proper development of the community of practice. The prohibitions (Pāṭimokkha) are prescribed to guide the ethical conduct of bhikkhus, male monastics, and bhikkhunīs, female monastics.
Main Content
The rule Na vinyastikākṛtasya concerns the principle of “vinyasti” (viniṭṭhapti), that is, the official announcement or establishment of actions, decisions, or measures in the Sangha. When an action, decision, or handling of a matter has not been announced or established according to the standard procedure of the Sangha, it is not considered lawful or valid in monastic discipline.
This official announcement procedure is very important. It ensures that the decisions of the Sangha are known to all members, openly discussed, and voluntarily accepted. This reflects the spirit of democracy and transparency in the early Buddhist community. Without official announcement, actions may be disputed and cause division or friction in the Sangha.
This principle applies to many situations: from admitting a new member, disciplining a member who has violated the rules, to general decisions about communal practice life. Only when such actions are announced before the community according to the proper procedure, usually by three announcements, do they have legal effect in the Sangha.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
