– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– THE PRECEPTS OF THE BHIKKHUNĪS
– EXPLAINING THE FIRST SECTION OF THE 141 PĀCITTIYAS
86. PRECEPT: SOCIALIZING WITH WORLDLY PEOPLE.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time the bhikkhunī Kālī ordained the third daughter of the Licchavi family, and afterward that woman lived in close association with worldly people and those of other sects. The bhikkhunīs then reported this to Mahāprajāpatī. Mahāprajāpatī brought the matter and reported it fully to the Blessed One. The Buddha ordered that bhikkhunī to be summoned. When she arrived, the Buddha asked:
—Is this matter true?
—It is true, Blessed One.
—That is a bad thing. From now on, I do not permit such close association.
Thereupon, the Buddha instructed Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī to transmit the order to all the bhikkhunīs living in the city of Śrāvastī to assemble together, and even those who had already heard it were to hear it again:
—If a bhikkhunī lives in close association with worldly people or those of other sects—even living in close association with gardeners or sāmaṇeras—whether for a whole day or for just a moment, she commits a pācittiya offense.
EXPLANATION:
(Some terms above have already been explained.)
Daytime: From dawn until sunset.
Even for just a moment: Only for a brief instant.
Living in close association: Living in bodily close association, in verbal close association, or in both bodily and verbal close association—even living with gardeners or sāmaṇeras—incurs a pācittiya offense.
Pācittiya: As stated above. If a bhikkhunī is fond of living in close association with various persons, the preceptress bhikkhunī and the instructor bhikkhunī should have her live separately in another place.
If a bhikkhu lives in close association, he commits a Vinaya offense. Therefore the Blessed One has spoken (as above).
