CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF THE ASURAS AND ALL VIRTUOUS DEITIES

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, once again with utmost sincerity bows in homage to the Triple Gem, casting the five parts of the body to the earth, and vows to take the place of all asura kings, all asuras and the kindred of the asuras throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space. We further vow, on behalf of all those who are intelligent, upright, dwelling in heaven, on earth, and in the void, the virtuous, the punishers of evil, the guardians, the upholders of dhāraṇīs, the divine kings of the eight classes, the divine generals of the eight classes, and extending further—whether within or without, whether far or near, in east, west, south, and north, in the four intermediate directions, above and below,

throughout the entire Dharma realm—all those who possess the power of great spiritual penetration and the power of great majestic virtue such as these: we vow to take the place of all these beings and take refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will together extend their minds to protect and shelter, that the asura kings, all asuras, and the kindred of the asuras—and we further vow that those who are intelligent and upright, dwelling in heaven, on earth, and in the void, the masters of virtue and punishers of evil, the guardians and upholders of dhāraṇīs, the divine kings of the eight classes, the divine generals of the eight classes, and their kindred—may escape the guest-dust of afflictions, may purify all their obstructions, may give rise to the Mahāyāna mind and cultivate the Way without hindrance; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās be ever present before them;

that the four unobstructed eloquences and the six spiritual penetrations all be fulfilled according to their wishes; that they may forever bring loving-kindness and compassion to rescue and liberate sentient beings, cultivate the Bodhisattva Way, enter the wisdom of the Buddhas, realize the vajra mind, and attain the rank of Perfect Enlightenment.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF THE MĀRA KINGS

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, once again with utmost sincerity bows in homage, casting the five parts of the body to the earth, and vows on behalf of the great Māra kings, the great Māras of the five quarters, and extending to east, west, south, and north, the four intermediate directions, above and below, to the very ends of empty space—all the Māra kings and the kinfolk of Māra—to take refuge and pay reverent homage . . . to the Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion of all the worlds:

Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Again we likewise take refuge in all the Triple Gem throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space.

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will together extend their minds to shelter, and we vow that the great Māra kings, the great Māras of the five quarters, all the Māra kings and the kindred of Māra—from beginningless time until this present day—may have whatever obstructing conditions all made pure, whatever karmic transgressions all eliminated, all their sufferings and afflictions liberated; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās be ever present before them; that the four unobstructed wisdoms and the six spiritual penetrations be sovereign and unimpeded; that they cultivate the Bodhisattva Way without ceasing and without resting, first liberating sentient beings and afterward fulfilling the Buddha Way.

CHAPTER TWENTY

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF THE HUMAN REALM, KINGS OF NATIONS, AND OTHERS

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, has together vowed on behalf of the devas, the immortals, the nāgas, the deities, and the eight classes of beings, and has paid homage to the Buddhas.

Now we vow, on behalf of the human realm, all the kings of men, to pay homage to the Buddhas and thereby repay the kindness shown to humankind.

We further vow, on behalf of our fathers and mothers, our teachers and elders, and all the people, to pay homage to the Buddhas. Why is this so?

Because if there were no ruler of the nation, all sentient beings would not know upon what to rely. It is by virtue of the ruler of the nation that all people may dwell in peace and delight in their occupations; they walk upon the ruler's land, they live upon the ruler's land, and they receive countless other benefits beyond reckoning. Therefore the Great Assembly must hold a heart of gratitude and repay this kindness.

The Sūtra teaches:

If anyone, through the six periods of day and night, is willing to bear suffering, and out of the desire to benefit others vows to repay kindness, then he must give rise to such a mind in order to cultivate the practice of loving-kindness and compassion.

By the power of that vow, let one think to repay the protecting kindness of the nation's ruler, think to repay the providing kindness of the benefactor, think to repay the kindness of birth and rearing from father and mother; think to repay the teaching kindness of one's master and elder, think to repay the delivering kindness of all the Buddhas.

If anyone is able with utmost sincerity ever to bear such thoughts in mind, that person enters the Way very swiftly.

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, perceives the wholesome kindness of all the Buddhas and Great Sages, who open and transform and gently lead us, so earnestly as this, causing us to know how to repay kindness.

Today we are born into the age of the Dharma's decline, yet through the kindness of the nation's ruler the Buddha-Dharma is made to flourish and shine; through the ruler's full and ample offerings, sparing no precious treasures, all the people are made to follow the ruler's example and to give rise to hearts of taking refuge and reverence toward the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha.

Furthermore, those who have left the household life are able to settle their minds in the practice of the Way, free to walk, stand, lie, and sit without hindrance or obstruction; the ruler does not require the renunciants to take part in worldly affairs; they need only devote themselves to exhorting others to do good, vowing that sentient beings may swiftly escape the suffering of birth and death; they need only devote themselves to proclaiming the immeasurable Dharma gates, pointing out the true road and the right path for devas and humans.

Since the ruler's kindness is as abundant as this, how could we fail to pay homage to the Buddhas with all our hearts in order to repay the ruler's kindness? Together we must with utmost sincerity bow in homage, vowing on behalf of the nation's ruler to take refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

Namo Maitreya Buddha

Namo Śākyamuni Buddha

Namo Kāśyapa Buddha

Namo Pure-Intent Buddha

Namo Knowledge-Brother Buddha

Namo Fierce-Majestic-Virtue Buddha

Namo Great-Radiance Buddha

Namo Buddha-Light-Wondrous Buddha

Namo Pure-Treasury Buddha

Namo Discerning-Majesty Buddha

Namo Without-Loss Buddha

Namo Hidden-Sun Buddha

Namo Moonlight Buddha

Namo Upholding-Brightness Buddha

Namo Good-Tranquil-Conduct Buddha

Namo Immovable Buddha

Namo Great-Entreaty Buddha

Namo Virtue-Dharma Buddha

Namo Adornment-King Buddha

Namo Lofty-Emergence Buddha

Namo Blazing-Flame Buddha

Namo Flower-Virtue Buddha

Namo Jewel-Adornment Buddha

Namo Supreme-Goodness Buddha

Namo Jewel-Supreme Buddha

Namo Beneficial-Wisdom Buddha

Namo Solemn-Ferrying Buddha

Namo Boundless-Body Bodhisattva

Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Again we likewise take refuge in all the Triple Gem throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space.

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will extend their minds to embrace and receive, and that the present ruler of the nation may have a body sound and strong, majestic virtue resounding afar, an enterprise everlasting, a life of wisdom without limit, a heart of loving-kindness without end; that sentient beings turn their hearts to him, that the Bodhisattva's transforming work flourishes, that devas and humans praise and admire him.

May the four equanimities and the six perfections grow ever brighter day by day; may the four unobstructed eloquences and joyous expounding be without limit; may he attain a sovereign mind, be complete in the six spiritual penetrations, and the moment he raises the thought of samādhi and total retention, possess it at once; with loving-kindness and compassion for the world, may his kindness extend throughout the six paths, may his myriad practices soon be perfected, and the Buddha Way swiftly accomplished.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF THE KINDRED OF THE NATION'S RULER

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, once again with sincere hearts bows in homage to the Triple Gem, vowing on behalf of the kindred of the nation's ruler, the hundred officials, and the kindred of the hundred officials, to take refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

Namo Maitreya Buddha.

Namo Blessing-and-Majestic-Virtue Buddha.

Namo Strength-Conduct Buddha.

Namo Rāhu-Deva Buddha.

Namo Boundless-Body Bodhisattva.

Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

Again we likewise take refuge in all the Triple Gem throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space.

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will together extend their minds to protect and uphold, and that the kindred of the nation's ruler, the hundred officials, and the kindred of those persons may have body and mind at peace and joy, lifespans without limit; that they cultivate the Mahāyāna Way and enter the wisdom of the Buddhas; that they keep the four great vows and never forsake sentient beings; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās be ever present before them; that with the six penetrations and eight liberations they fully perceive the faculties and natures of beings, complete in the two adornments, sovereign in spiritual power, with hearts of loving-kindness like the Buddhas, gathering and transforming sentient beings.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF FATHER AND MOTHER

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, should next recall and reflect upon the kindness of our father and mother in giving us birth and rearing us; carrying us in the womb and nursing us, their love profound and their affection deep, willing to take danger upon themselves that their child might be safe and at ease. When the child grows up, the parents further labor to teach the child to know virtue and propriety, with all their hearts seeking teachers to instruct the child in learning, vowing that the child may comprehend principle and meaning, see broadly and understand deeply, ever desiring that the child keep pace with others. Whatever the child desires, the parents provide, sparing not even the family's treasures.

Day and night they fret with anxiety; sometimes for the sake of the child the parents fall into sickness and suffering, sleeping no restful sleep. When the child travels far, the parents long for and think of the child all the more.

In all the world, the kindness of father and mother is the heaviest of all.

Thus the Buddha taught:

"In all the world, there is no kindness equal to the kindness of father and mother."

Alas! Those who have left the household life and those who remain in the household, not yet able to attain the Way, must diligently strive to cultivate and learn, doing good without rest, accumulating virtue without ceasing, only then may they hope to repay the toilsome and nurturing kindness of their parents.

Together the Great Assembly with utmost sincerity bows in homage to the Triple Gem, each one vowing on his own behalf, from the time he first possessed consciousness until this present day, on behalf of his parents through many lifetimes, his kinfolk through many kalpas, and all his kindred, to take refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

Namo Maitreya Buddha.

Namo Śākyamuni Buddha.

Namo Wisdom-Accumulation Buddha.

Namo Taming-and-Guiding Buddha.

Namo King-Like Buddha.

Namo Flower-Mark Buddha.

Namo Rāhula Buddha.

Namo Good-Mantra Buddha.

Namo Intent-Conduct Buddha.

Namo Brahma-Sound Buddha.

Namo Lion Buddha.

Namo Thunder-Sound Buddha.

Namo Penetrating-Mark Buddha.

Namo Peaceful-and-Secure Buddha.

Namo Wisdom-Nāga Buddha.

Namo Boundless-Body Bodhisattva.

Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

Again we likewise take refuge in all the Triple Gem throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space.

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will together extend their minds to embrace and receive, and that our fathers and mothers and kinfolk, and the kindred of our fathers, mothers, and kinfolk, from this day forward until the day of attaining Buddhahood, may have all their karmic obstructions eliminated, all their sufferings liberated, their accumulated afflictions ever purified; that long apart from the four modes of birth, they may freely take rebirth, draw near to all the Buddhas, and receive the Buddhas' prophecy; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās be ever present before them;

that with the four unobstructed eloquences and the powers of the six spiritual penetrations, sovereign and unimpeded, they attain the ten powers of wisdom, their bodies adorned with the excellent marks, and together ascend the place of enlightenment to attain the rank of Perfect Enlightenment.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF FATHERS AND MOTHERS OF FORMER LIVES

Today within the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, there may be those whose father and mother died early, who can never meet them again, and can only long for them in vain.

Not yet having attained the spiritual penetration of the heavenly eye, they do not know where their parents' spirits have been reborn after death.

They should only hasten, relying on the power of merit and virtue, to call them to mind and remember them with longing in order to repay their kindness; doing good without rest, until in the fullness of time success is achieved and their wish is surely fulfilled.

The Sūtra teaches: "To create merit on behalf of the departed is like sending provisions to one who has traveled far. If that person has been reborn in the heavens, then his merit and virtue increase in benefit day by day. If that person has fallen into the three evil paths, or has met with the eight calamities, then he is forever made to depart from suffering and affliction. If those persons are born to meet a Buddha and receive the True Dharma, then they at once attain transcendence and awakening.

Fathers and mothers of seven generations, and kinfolk of many kalpas, will then be freed of all their fears and dreads, and together attain liberation. This is the most honored and supreme way of repaying kindness, the utmost loving-kindness and utmost filial devotion of the wise and knowing child."

Today the Great Assembly should together, in sorrowful grief and longing remembrance, anguished and weeping, with choking voice, cast themselves down upon the earth, vowing on behalf of their fathers and mothers of many lifetimes and kinfolk of many kalpas, to take refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

Namo Maitreya Buddha

Namo Śākyamuni Buddha

Namo Brahma-King Buddha

Namo Ox-King Buddha

Namo Beneficial-Datta-Eye Buddha

Namo Nāga-Virtue Buddha

Namo Skillful-Mark Buddha

Namo Bright-Wondrous Buddha

Namo Moon-Lamp Buddha

Namo Majestic-Virtue-King Buddha

Namo Bodhi-Eye Buddha

Namo Body-Replete Buddha

Namo Wisdom-Land Buddha

Namo Boundless-Body Bodhisattva

Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Again we likewise take refuge in all the Triple Gem throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space.

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will rescue and ferry across, embracing and delivering our fathers and mothers and kinfolk of many lifetimes and many kalpas in the past, that from this day forward until the day of attaining the Buddha Way, all their karmic causes of transgression be eliminated, all their bitter fruits be cleansed away, their afflictions and accumulated karma made wholly pure; that severing the three obstructions and removing the five dreads, they cultivate the Bodhisattva Way to broadly liberate sentient beings; that with the eight liberations they cultivate the mind, with the four great vows benefit beings, draw near to the Tathāgata, and receive the Buddha's prophecy;

that without departing from their place they realize the fruit of the unborn, roam free in accord with thought, wander throughout all the Buddha-lands, swiftly perfect their practices and vows, and quickly realize Perfect Enlightenment.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF TEACHERS AND ELDERS

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, has already paid homage to the Buddhas on behalf of fathers, mothers, and kinfolk. Next we should reflect upon the kindness and virtue of our teachers and elders. Why is this so?

Because although our parents have the merit of giving us birth and rearing us, they cannot bring it about that we swiftly depart from the evil paths. Therefore, our teachers and elders bear toward us a kindness and virtue beyond measure. Our teachers and elders, with hearts of great loving-kindness, guide and lead us, exhort and gently coax us, ever teaching us to cultivate the good, desiring that we escape the ocean of birth and death and reach the far shore of liberation. In every beneficial matter they cause us to behold the Buddhas, to eliminate all afflictions and accumulations, and to abide peacefully in the unconditioned Way.

Such kindness and virtue—who can ever repay it to the full? Even a whole lifetime of practice is but benefit to oneself, and not yet a repayment of the teacher's and elder's kindness.

Thus the Buddha taught: "Among the good and knowing friends in all the world, none surpasses the teacher and elder, who having delivered himself is also able to deliver others."

That we today are able to leave the household life and receive the great precepts—this happiness is gained through the kindness of our teachers and elders. This being so, how could anyone fail to strive to repay and remember the kindness of his teacher?

Therefore let the Great Assembly together, with utmost sincerity, single-minded and earnest, cast the five parts of the body to the earth, vowing on behalf of the Upādhyāya, the Ācārya, the venerable witnesses of the same ordination platform, those of the upper, middle, and lower seats, and the kindred of those persons, to take refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

Namo Maitreya Buddha

Namo Śākyamuni Buddha

Namo Exceedingly-Excellent Buddha

Namo Great-Treasury Buddha

Namo Blessed-Virtue-Light Buddha

Namo Brahma-Letter Buddha

Namo Boundless-Body Bodhisattva

Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Again we likewise take refuge in all the Triple Gem throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space.

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will together extend their minds to embrace and receive, and that the Upādhyāya, the Ācārya, the venerable witnesses of the same ordination platform, those of the upper, middle, and lower seats, and the kindred of those persons, from this day forward until the day of attaining Buddhahood, may have all their karmic obstructions purified, all their sufferings liberated, all their afflictions cut off and removed; that according to their will they be reborn in the Pure Lands of the Buddhas; that the Bodhisattva practices and vows be wholly fulfilled, with the giving of wealth inexhaustible, the giving of Dharma inexhaustible, merit and virtue inexhaustible, peace and joy inexhaustible, lifespan inexhaustible, wisdom inexhaustible;

that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās be ever present before them; that with the four unobstructed wisdoms and the powers of the six spiritual penetrations, sovereign and unimpeded, they enter the Śūraṅgama samādhi, attain the vajra mind, never forsaking their former vows, but return to this world to transform and deliver sentient beings.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHAS ON BEHALF OF THE BHIKṢUS AND BHIKṢUṆĪS OF THE TEN DIRECTIONS

Today the Great Assembly, sharing the same karma in this place of practice, has already paid homage to the Buddhas on behalf of the Upādhyāya, the Ācārya, and the rest. Hereafter we must again with utmost sincerity bow in homage to the Triple Gem, universally on behalf of all the bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, śikṣamāṇās, śrāmaṇeras, and śrāmaṇerīs throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space, present and future, and the kindred of those persons, to pay homage to the Buddhas; and we further vow, on behalf of all the upāsakas, upāsikās throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space, and the kindred of those persons, to pay homage to the Buddhas;

Thus, on behalf of all humankind within the human realm and the kindred of the human realm, today the Great Assembly, out of hearts of compassion, universally on behalf of all, takes refuge in the World's Father of Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion:

We vow that the Triple Gem, with hearts of compassion, will together extend their minds to shelter, and that all the bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, śikṣamāṇās, śrāmaṇeras, and śrāmaṇerīs throughout the ten directions, to the very ends of empty space, and the kindred of those persons; and we further vow that all the upāsakas and upāsikās throughout the ten directions and the kindred of those persons;

and we further vow that, from of old until now, all the households of faithful donors, dāna-patis, good friends, evil friends, together with those who have affinity or no affinity with the Buddha-Dharma and the kindred of those persons, extending further to all humankind, all of the human realm, from beginningless time until this present day, may have however many afflictions all cut off and removed, however many obstructing conditions all made pure, however many karmic transgressions all cleansed away, however many sufferings all liberated; that departing from the three karmas, they remove the five dreads; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās be ever present before them;

that the four unobstructed wisdoms and the six spiritual penetrations all be sovereign, that they cultivate the Bodhisattva practice, enter the Way of the One Vehicle, and deliver and liberate sentient beings.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
