There is a supreme samadhi called Peace and Bliss,Able universally to rescue all living beings;It emits great, inconceivable light,Causing all who behold it to be tamed.
The light thus emitted is called Good Manifestation;If anyone encounters this light,They will surely gain benefit, never in vain,And thereby attain unsurpassed wisdom.

The bodhisattva formerly manifested before the Buddhas,
Manifested the Dharma, the Sangha, and the right path,
And also manifested Buddha stupas and images;
Therefore this light came to be.

Again, he emits a light called Radiant Illumination,Outshining all the brilliance of the devas;All obscuring darkness is dispelled,Universally benefiting living beings.
This light awakens all beings,Causing them to hold bright lamps and make offerings to the Buddha;Through offering bright lamps to the Buddha,They become the Unsurpassed Lamp of the world.

They light oil lamps and lamps of ghee,
And also kindle every kind of brilliant torch,
Together with the finest fragrant jeweled candles;
By offering these to the Buddha, this light was attained.

Again, he emits a light called Deliverance;
This light awakens all beings,
Causing them to bring forth the mind of great vows
To liberate the multitudes from the ocean of desire.

Then they can cross the four currentsAnd advance to the city of sorrowless liberation.Where roads cross great rivers,They build bridges, ferries, boats, and rafts;They censure the conditioned and praise quiescence;Therefore this light came to be.

And contemplate the wondrous flavor of the Dharma of liberation.

If they can abandon the objects of the five desires

They can use the ambrosia of the Buddha-Dharma
To extinguish the world’s thirst of craving.

Adorned with excellent marks and seated upon lotus thrones,
And constantly praise his most supreme virtues;
Therefore this light came to be.

Again, he emits a light called Loving Delight;
This light awakens all beings,
Causing their hearts to revere and cherish the Buddhas,
To revere and cherish the honored Dharma, and to revere and cherish the Sangha.

If their minds constantly revere and cherish the Buddhas,

Then, within the assemblies of the Tathagatas,
They attain profound, unsurpassed patience with respect to dharmas.

They awaken immeasurable numbers of beings,
Causing them to recollect the Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha,
And teach them to bring forth the mind of sovereign virtue;

Knives, spears, swords, and halberds raining from above
Are all transformed into beautiful flower garlands.

Because in the past, along the roads,They spread fragrances, scattered flowers, and laid out garmentsTo welcome and escort Buddhas walking there,They now attain this light.
Again, he emits a light called Purity of Dharmas,Able to cause every poreTo proclaim inconceivable wondrous Dharma,Which all who hear rejoice in and understand.

What arises from causes and conditions is originally unborn;
The Buddha’s Dharma-body is not a body;
Dharma-nature abides forever, like empty space;
By explaining these meanings, this light was attained.

The gates of light described aboveAre limitless as the sands of the Ganges;All issue from the Great Sage’s pores,And each light performs a different function.
Just as a single pore emits lightsImmeasurable and countless as the sands of the Ganges,So too do all the pores;This is the power of the Great Sage’s samadhi.

The lights are attained according to former practices;
They accord with those who cultivated together through past affinities.
Thus are these lights now emitted;
This is the Great Sage’s mastery of wisdom.

Those who in former times shared mastery in meritorious deeds,
And those who cherished, delighted in, or rejoiced in them—
Seeing others practice, they rejoiced as well—
Can now all be seen within these lights.

If anyone personally cultivates meritorious deedsAnd makes offerings to immeasurable Buddhas,Constantly aspiring to the Buddhas’ virtues,They are awakened by this light.
Just as one born blind does not see the sun,It is not that the sun fails to rise;All whose eyes are clear behold it distinctlyAnd each performs their duties according to their station.
The bodhisattva’s light is also thus:All who possess wisdom behold it,But ordinary people of wrong belief and the deluded and foolishCannot perceive this light.
Mani palaces, carts, and carriages,Beautiful jewels and fragrant ointments shining brightly,Naturally belong to those endowed with merit;Those without merit cannot dwell there.
The bodhisattva’s light is also thus:It shines upon all whose wisdom is profound,But ordinary fools of wrong belief and shallow understandingCannot behold that light.

If anyone hears of the distinctions among these lights
And can bring forth deep, pure faith,
They forever sever every net of doubt
And swiftly become an unsurpassed banner of virtue.

There is a supreme samadhi that can manifest,
Whose retinues and adornments are all sovereign;
Throughout all lands in the ten directions,
No assembly of Buddha-children can compare with it.

There is a wondrous lotus adorned with light,As vast as a three-thousand-great-thousand world-system;His body sits upright throughout the lotus—This is the spiritual power of samadhi.

There are also beautiful lotuses surrounding it,
As numerous as dust motes in ten lands;
Assemblies of Buddha-children sit upon these flowers,
Abiding in the awe-inspiring spiritual power of samadhi.

Having accomplished wholesome causes and conditions in former lives
And fully cultivated the Buddhas’ virtues,
These living beings surround the bodhisattva,
Joining their palms together and gazing insatiably.

As the moon among the constellations,So is the bodhisattva amid the assembly;Such is the Dharma of bodhisattva practiceWhen entering the awe-inspiring spiritual power of samadhi.
As it is manifested in one direction,Surrounded by assemblies of Buddha-children,So it is in every direction,Abiding in the awe-inspiring spiritual power of samadhi.

There is a supreme samadhi called Net of Directions;
Abiding in it, the bodhisattva reveals extensively,
Manifesting bodies throughout every direction,
Sometimes entering concentration and sometimes emerging from it.

He may enter right concentration in the east,Then enter right concentration in the west,And afterward emerge from concentration in the east.

Or he may enter right concentration in one direction
And afterward emerge from it in another;
Thus entering and emerging throughout the ten directions—
This is called the bodhisattva’s power of samadhi.

Throughout all lands to the furthest east,Before immeasurable Buddha-Tathagatas,He manifests personally drawing near to them all,Abiding in unmoving, quiescent samadhi.
Yet throughout the worlds in the west,Wherever all the Buddhas dwell,He manifests emerging from samadhiAnd prepares immeasurable offerings.
Throughout all lands to the furthest west,Before immeasurable Buddha-Tathagatas,He manifests personally drawing near to them all,Abiding in unmoving, quiescent samadhi.
Yet throughout the worlds in the east,Wherever all the Buddhas dwell,He manifests emerging from samadhiAnd prepares immeasurable offerings.

Thus, throughout the worlds of the ten directions,
The bodhisattva enters everywhere without omission,
Sometimes entering unmoving, quiescent samadhi,
And sometimes reverently making offerings to the Buddhas.

Within the eye faculty he enters right concentration,
And from the object of form emerges from concentration,

Within a celestial palace he enters right concentration,
And from empty space emerges, his mind undisturbed.
This is called the stage of immeasurable virtue,
Whose mastery of samadhi is inconceivable.

All Tathagatas throughout the ten directions
Could not finish describing it in immeasurable kalpas.
Even if all Tathagatas spoke together,
The karmic retributions of living beings would remain inconceivable.

The transformations of nagas, the Buddhas’ mastery,And the bodhisattvas’ spiritual powers are also inconceivable.If one wished to reveal them by analogy,Ultimately no analogy could adequately compare;Yet those of penetrating wisdomUnderstand their meaning through analogies.
Sravakas abiding in the eight liberationsFreely manifest transformations:They can make one body appear as many bodies,And again unite many bodies into one.

In empty space they enter the fire samadhi,
Walking, standing, lying, and sitting in midair;
Their upper bodies spout water while their lower bodies pour forth fire,
And their upper bodies pour forth fire while their lower bodies spout water.

All this occurs within a single thought,
With boundless gates of mastery.
Sravakas do not possess complete great compassion
And do not seek the Buddha-path for living beings,
Yet they can manifest immeasurable spiritual powers;
How much more can Buddhas and mighty bodhisattvas!

As the sun and moon in empty space
Cast their reflections throughout the ten directions,
Appearing in the waters of ponds, lakes, marshes, basins, and bowls,
And in streams, rivers, and great seas alike,

So too do the bodhisattvas’ forms
Appear inconceivably throughout the ten directions;
This is entirely through the sovereign power of samadhi,
And only the Tathagata realizes and knows it.

As clear water reflects weaponsOf diverse kinds without confusion—Swords, halberds, bows, and arrows of many sorts,Helmets, armor, and vehicles of various kinds—
Whatever their different characteristics may be,Clear water distinctly reflects them all,Yet the water itself makes no distinctions;The bodhisattva’s samadhi is also thus.
In the ocean dwells a spirit named Good Voice,Whose voice accords with every creature in the sea;Every language is distinctly manifested,Causing all beings to rejoice.

Though that ocean spirit possesses greed, anger, and delusion,
It still skillfully understands every voice;
How much more can the sovereign power of comprehensive retention
Cause all beings to rejoice!

There was a woman named Eloquence,
Born after her parents prayed to the devas.
Anyone who abandoned evil and delighted in truth
Would enter her body and acquire wondrous eloquence.

Though that woman possessed desire, anger, and delusion,
She could still grant eloquence to those who followed her;
How much more can a bodhisattva replete with wisdom
Bestow benefit upon all beings!

As an illusionist skilled in magical arts
Can manifest many kinds of beings and objects,
And in an instant display days, months, and years,
As well as prosperous, peaceful, and joyful cities,

Though the magician possesses greed, anger, and delusion,
He can still transform things to delight the world;
How much more can the powers of meditation and liberation
Cause all beings to rejoice!

When the devas and asuras wage war,The defeated asuras all flee together;Their weapons, vehicles, and armiesAll vanish at once and cannot be found.

Though asuras possess greed, anger, and delusion,
They can still perform inconceivable transformations;
How much more can those with spiritual penetrations and fearless power—
How could their sovereign transformations be measured!

Sakra Devendra has a king of elephants.When it knows that the Lord of Devas wishes to travel,It transforms itself to have thirty-two heads,Each head complete with six white tusks.
Upon every tusk are seven ponds,Each filled with fragrant, pure water;Within each of those fragrant, pure pondsAre seven exceedingly beautiful lotuses.
Upon each of those beautiful lotusesAre seven celestial maidens,Skilled in playing instruments, singing, and making music,Who sport together with the Lord of Devas.

That elephant may also relinquish its original form
And transform its body to resemble a deva,
Its deportment in walking and standing like that of a true deva;
Such is its power of spiritual transformation.

Though the elephant king possesses greed, anger, and delusion,
It can still manifest such spiritual powers;
How much more can one replete with wisdom and skillful means
Attain mastery within samadhi!

As an asura transforms its bodily form,
Its feet standing upon the vajra limit at the ocean’s floor,
The deepest ocean water reaches only halfway up its body,
While its head rises level with the summit of Mount Sumeru.

Though an asura possesses greed, anger, and delusion,
It can still manifest such vast spiritual powers;
How much more can the Lamp Illuminating the World, who has subdued Mara,
Possess mastery in awe-inspiring spiritual power!

When the devas and asuras wage war,
The Lord of Devas’ spiritual power is inconceivable;
According to the number of enemy troops,
He manifests an equal number of bodies to fight them.

All the asuras think to themselves:“Sakra Devendra has come to fight us;He will certainly seize us and bind our hands and feet.”Thus they all become anxious.

Sakra manifests a body with a thousand eyes,
Holding a vajra in his hand that streams blazing fire;
Clad in armor and wielding a staff, he is exceedingly majestic,
And the asuras flee in fear when they behold him.

The Lord of Devas, through only a little merit,Can still crush such mighty enemies;How much more can one of great compassion who rescues all,Replete with virtue, attain mastery!

In the Trayastrimsa Heaven there is a celestial drum,
Produced through the devas’ karmic retribution.
When it knows the devas have become attached to heedlessness,
This voice naturally resounds through the sky:

“All five desires are impermanent,Like bubbles upon water, false in nature.The realms are like dreams and shimmering heat,Like the moon in water and floating clouds.

“Heedlessness is an enemy and an affliction,
The path of birth and death, devoid of coolness.
Whoever becomes intoxicated by heedlessness
Falls into the mouth of the great fish of samsara.

“All roots of suffering in the worldAre dreaded and rejected by the sages.The five desires destroy all virtues;You should delight in the true Dharma.”

When the devas of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three hear the drum,
They lead one another to the Hall of Excellent Dharma.
There the Lord of Devas teaches them the wondrous Dharma,
Causing all to accord with the path and eliminate craving.

The formless, invisible sound of the drumCan still benefit the assemblies of devas;How much more can one of Great Loving-Kindness who manifests a physical bodyDeliver all sentient beings!
When the devas and asuras wage war,Through the supreme power of the devas’ merit,The celestial drum resounds and tells the devas:“You should have no fear!”

Upon hearing the sound of this drum,
All the devas lose their fear and gain strength;
Then the asuras become terrified,
And all their troops and generals retreat in flight.

The wondrous samadhi of ambrosia is like the celestial drum:
It constantly resounds with the sound of subduing Mara and quiescence.
Great compassion, pitying all, comes to their rescue,
Causing every living being to end affliction.

The Lord of Devas responds universally to the celestial maidensWith ninety-two nayutas of bodies,Causing every celestial maiden to think,“The Celestial King delights with me alone.”

As he responds universally to the celestial maidens,
So too does he within the Hall of Excellent Dharma;
In a single thought he manifests spiritual powers,
Appearing before them all to teach the Dharma.

Though the Lord of Devas possesses greed, anger, and delusion,
He can still cause all his retinue to rejoice;
How much more can one with great spiritual powers and skillful means
Cause all beings to rejoice!

The great celestial king of Paranirmita-vasavartin
Exercises mastery within the desire realm;
Using afflictions, karma, and suffering as a netted cage,
He binds all ordinary beings.

Though that celestial king possesses greed, anger, and delusion,
He can still exercise mastery over living beings;
How much more can one endowed with all ten powers of wisdom
Cause all beings to practice together!

The Great Brahma King of the great-thousand world-system
Can manifest a body before every Brahma deva
In all their dwelling places,
Proclaiming everywhere the wondrous Brahma voice.

That Great Brahma King, while still within the world,
Can exercise mastery in meditation and spiritual powers;
How much more can the unsurpassed, world-transcending one
Attain mastery in meditation and liberation!

Mahesvara, sovereign in wisdom,When the great ocean’s naga king sends rain,Can distinguish and count every drop,Clearly knowing them all in a single thought.

How could one who diligently trained for immeasurable kalpas
And attained the wisdom of unsurpassed bodhi
Fail, within a single thought,
To know universally the minds of all living beings!

The karmic retributions of living beings are inconceivable:
Through the power of great winds, the world arises—
Vast oceans, great mountains, celestial palaces,
Jewels, lights, and all varieties of things.

The wind can also raise clouds and bring heavy rain,And can disperse masses of cloud;It can ripen the five kinds of grainAnd bring peace and happiness to living beings.

The great wind has not studied the paramitas,
Nor has it studied the Buddhas’ virtues,
Yet it can still accomplish inconceivable deeds;
How much more can one replete with all practices and vows!

The various voices of men and women,The sounds of all birds and beasts,The roaring sea, flowing rivers, and rolling thunderCan all delight the hearts of living beings.

How much more can one who knows that the nature of sound is like an echo,
Who has attained wondrous, unobstructed eloquence,
Universally respond to beings by teaching the Dharma
And cause all living beings to rejoice!

The ocean possesses a rare and extraordinary quality:
It equally reflects the images of all phenomena;
Jewels, worldly things, and the myriad streams
Are all received without opposition.

The inexhaustible meditations and stages of liberation
Are an equal seal in just the same way;
Merit, wisdom, and every wondrous practice
Are universally cultivated without weariness or satisfaction.

When the great ocean’s naga king roams at play,He exercises mastery in every place,Raising clouds that cover all four continents;Those clouds are adorned with many colors.

Over the sixth heaven, Paranirmita-vasavartin,
The clouds are the color of pure gold;
Over the Nirmanarati Heaven, the clouds are ruby-red;
Over the Tusita Heaven, they are the color of frost and snow.

Over the Yama Heaven, the clouds are lapis lazuli;
Over the Trayastrimsa Heaven, they are agate;
Over the Heaven of the Four Great Kings, they are crystal;
Above the great ocean, they are vajra-colored.

In the realm of the kimnaras, they are the color of wondrous fragrance;
In the nagas’ dwellings, they are lotus-colored;
In the yaksas’ dwellings, they are white-goose-colored;
Among the asuras, they are the color of mountain rock.

Over Uttarakuru, they are flame-gold;
Over Jambudvipa, they are sapphire-colored;
Over the other two continents, they are adorned with mixed colors,
Responding to whatever their inhabitants delight in.

Moreover, over the Paranirmita-vasavartin Heaven,
The lightning within the clouds shines like sunlight;
Over the Nirmanarati Heaven, it is like moonlight;
Over the Tusita Heaven, it is the color of Jambu River gold.

Over the Yama Heaven, it is white as snow;
Over the Trayastrimsa Heaven, it shines like golden fire;
Over the Heaven of the Four Great Kings, it has the colors of many jewels;
Within the great ocean, it is ruby-red.

In the kimnaras’ domain, it is lapis lazuli;In the naga kings’ dwellings, it is the color of jeweled treasuries;In the yaksas’ dwellings, it is crystal;Among the asuras, it is agate.

Over Uttarakuru, it is fire-pearl-colored;
Over Jambudvipa, it is indranila-blue;
Over the other two continents, it is manifoldly adorned;
As are the cloud colors, so too are those of the lightning.

In Paranirmita-vasavartin, thunder sounds like the Brahma voice;
In the Nirmanarati Heaven, like a great drum;
In the Tusita Heaven, like the proclamation of the true Dharma;
In the Yama Heaven, like the voices of celestial maidens.

In the Heaven of the Thirty-Three,It is like the music of kimnaras;In the Heaven of the Four Great Kings, who protect the world,It is like the voices of gandharvas.

Within the ocean, it sounds like two mountains colliding;
Among the kimnaras, like flutes and pipes;
Within the naga kings’ cities, like the kalavinka bird;
In the yaksas’ dwellings, like the voices of naga maidens.

Among the asuras, it sounds like a celestial drum;
Among humans, like the ocean tide.

Over Paranirmita-vasavartin rains wondrous fragrance,Adorned with all kinds of assorted flowers;Over the Nirmanarati Heaven rain tala flowers,Mandarava flowers, and showers of fragrance.
Over the Tusita Heaven rain mani jewels,Complete with every kind of jeweled adornment,Hair jewels radiant like moonlight,And supremely wondrous garments the color of pure gold.

Over the Yama Heaven rain banners, pennants, and canopies,
Flower garlands, fragrant ointments, and ornaments,
Supremely wondrous garments the color of red pearls,
Together with every kind of fine music.

Over the Trayastrimsa Heaven rain wish-fulfilling jewels,
Hard black agarwood, aloeswood, and sandalwood,
Turmeric, kalaka, tamala, and the like;
Beautiful flowers and fragrant water rain intermingled.

Within the City of the Wise Kings rain delicious foods,
Perfect in color, fragrance, and flavor, which increase strength;
Immeasurable wondrous jewels also rain down—
All of this is produced by the naga king.

Moreover, within the great ocean,
Rain falls unceasingly in streams as broad as cart axles;
Inexhaustible treasuries of great jewels also rain down,
Together with every kind of adornment.

In the kimnaras’ land rain necklaces,Lotus-colored garments and jewels,Mallika and varsika fragrances,Together with every kind of music.
In the nagas’ cities rain red pearls;In the yaksas’ cities rain radiant mani jewels;Among the asuras rain knives and clubsThat subdue and eliminate every enemy.
Over Uttarakuru rain necklacesAnd immeasurable supremely wondrous flowers;Over the two continents Purvavideha and AparagodaniyaRain every kind of ornament.

Over Jambudvipa rains pure water,
Moistening every place always at the proper time,
Nourishing flowering and fruit-bearing trees and medicinal plants,
And ripening all crops and seedlings.

Thus, immeasurable wondrous adornments—
All kinds of clouds, lightning, thunder, and rain—
Are freely produced by the naga king,
While his body remains unmoving and without discrimination.

The naga king dwelling in the worldly oceanCan still manifest such inconceivable power;How much more can one who has entered the ocean of Dharma-virtuesManifest great spiritual transformations!
No analogy can adequately compareWith the bodhisattvas’ gates of liberation;I now provisionally employ these analogiesTo describe briefly the bodhisattvas’ sovereign powers.
Foremost wisdom and vast wisdom,True wisdom and boundless wisdom,Supreme wisdom and surpassingly excellent wisdom—Such Dharma gates have now been taught.
This Dharma is exceedingly rare and extraordinary;If, after hearing it, a person can accept it,Can believe, receive, praise, and proclaim it,Such deeds are exceedingly difficult.

Among all ordinary beings in the world,
Those who believe this Dharma are exceedingly rare;
Only one who diligently cultivates mastery in pure merit
And possesses wholesome causes from the past can believe it.

Among living beings throughout all worlds,
Few wish to seek the Sravaka Vehicle;
Those who seek the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle are fewer still;
Those who turn toward the Mahayana are exceedingly hard to encounter.

Turning toward the Mahayana is comparatively easy;
Believing this Dharma is harder still.
How much more so is upholding and reciting it, explaining it to others,
Practicing according to the Dharma, and understanding its true meaning!

Suppose someone bore a great-thousand world-system
Upon their head for a kalpa without moving their body;
What that person did would not yet be difficult—
It is believing this Dharma that is truly difficult.

Suppose someone held ten lands in their hands
And stood in empty space for a full ten kalpas;
What that person did would not yet be difficult—
It is believing this Dharma that is truly difficult.

Suppose someone gave beings as numerous as dust motes in ten lands
Whatever they desired for an entire kalpa;
That person’s merit would not yet be supreme—
The one who believes this Dharma is truly most excellent.

Suppose someone reverently served and made offerings for an entire kalpa
To Buddhas as numerous as dust motes in ten lands;
If another can recite and uphold this chapter of the sutra,
The latter’s merit is more excellent than the former’s.

When Bodhisattva Bhadrashri had finished speaking these verses, the worlds throughout the ten directions quaked in six ways, the palaces of Mara vanished, and the evil destinies ceased. All Buddhas of the ten directions appeared before him, simultaneously extended their right hands to stroke the crown of his head, and praised him with one voice: “Excellent! You have skillfully taught this Dharma. All those who are diligent rejoice in accord with it.”
