7. CHAPTER SEVEN: THE NAMES OF THE TATHAGATA

(Chinese Edition, First Part, Fascicle 12)

At that time, the Blessed One was in the land of Magadha, at the site of enlightenment, having just attained perfect awakening. In the Hall of Universal Radiance, he sat upon a lion throne in the treasury of lotuses. His wondrous realization was entirely perfect; he had utterly transcended the two modes of conduct, attained the signless Dharma, abided in the dwelling place of all Buddhas, realized the equality of Buddhahood, reached the unobstructed state, acted without impediment, stood within the inconceivable, and universally beheld the three times.

He was assembled with bodhisattvas as numerous as the dust motes in ten Buddha-lands. All were destined to attain Buddhahood in one more life and had gathered together from other directions. They were all skilled in contemplating the realm of sentient beings, the Dharma-realm, the realms of worlds, the realm of nirvana, the fruits and retributions of every kind of karma, the successive activities of the mind, all meanings expressed in the teachings of the mundane and supramundane, the conditioned and the unconditioned, and the past, present, and future. They skillfully contemplated all such dharmas.

The bodhisattvas thought: “If the Blessed One compassionately remembers us, may he accord with our aspirations and reveal these matters:

Buddha-lands, the abodes of Buddhas, the adornments of Buddha-lands, the Dharma-nature of Buddhas, the purity of Buddha-lands, the Buddhas’ teaching of Dharma, the essential nature of Buddha-lands, the awe-inspiring virtue of Buddhas, the accomplishment of Buddha-lands, and the Buddhas’ great enlightenment.

“Just as the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, throughout the worlds of the ten directions, in order to bring all bodhisattvas to accomplishment, to ensure that the lineage of the Tathagatas is never severed, to rescue and protect all sentient beings, to cause sentient beings to abandon every affliction, to clarify all practices, to expound all dharmas, to eliminate every defilement, to utterly sever every net of doubt, to cast away all craving, and to destroy every object of attachment, expound the bodhisattvas’ ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, ten treasuries, ten grounds, ten vows, ten samadhis, ten superknowledges, and ten crownings.

They also expound the Tathagata’s ground, the Tathagata’s domain, the Tathagata’s spiritual power, the Tathagata’s fearlessness, the Tathagata’s samadhis, the Tathagata’s supernormal powers, the Tathagata’s mastery, the Tathagata’s unobstructed freedom, the Tathagata’s eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, the Tathagata’s eloquence, the Tathagata’s wisdom, and the Tathagata’s supreme excellence.

“May the Blessed One also expound these matters for us!”

The Blessed One then knew the thoughts of the bodhisattvas and, according to their various kinds, manifested spiritual powers for them.
