– EXPLAINING THE REMAINING PART OF THE SEKHIYA RULES.
41. "A rule to be trained in: One must not shake the hand while eating."
When shaking the hand, one must not direct it toward the person seated nearby. If food sticks to the hand, one should bring the hand in front of oneself and flick it, or flick it into the bowl.
If, through lack of restraint over the faculties, one shakes the hand while eating, this is to disregard the rule to be trained in. Except in the case of a deranged mind, there is an offense. Therefore it is said:
"A rule to be trained in: One must not shake the hand while eating."
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī, the account is given in full as above. At that time, a householder came to the monastery to offer a meal to the community of monks. While eating, the group of six monks looked into the bowls of those seated nearby with a mind of mockery. If they saw little food, they would say:
—How virtuous and restrained! If you are already full and will not eat more, please give it to me.
If they saw someone holding a large bowl, they would say:
—Oh! This one is greedy. The bowl looks like a great steamer pot. The donor can only provide this much — where would we get any more?
The monks, hearing this, felt ashamed, and brought the matter to report to the Blessed One. The Buddha then instructed that the group of six monks be summoned. When they had come, the Buddha asked:
—Did this matter truly occur?
—It did indeed, Blessed One.
—From this day forward, you must not look into the bowls of those seated nearby with a mind of mockery.
Then the Buddha commanded all the monks to assemble, and for the sake of ten benefits, established the rule for the monks — which all, even those who have already heard it, must hear again:
