31. "A rule of training: One must not toss food into the mouth."
Tossing food into the mouth: One must not roll rice into a ball and toss it from a distance into the mouth. If one is eating such things as sour jujubes, grapes, or roasted beans, tossing them into the mouth to eat incurs no offense. If one indulges the sense faculties and tosses food into the mouth, this constitutes disregard for the Sekhiya rules that must be trained in. Excepted is one whose mind is deranged—in such a case there is no offense. Therefore it is said:
"A rule of training: One must not toss food into the mouth."
When the Buddha was dwelling in the city of Śrāvastī, as explained in detail above. At that time, some householders came to the monastery to offer a meal to the community of monks. While eating, the group of six bhikkhus bit off half of a food item and stored the other half in their bowls, and were mocked by people of the world:
—Why do the śramaṇas, disciples of the Śākyan, behave like dissolute persons, biting off only half of a food item to eat? These are degenerate individuals—what conduct worthy of the path do they possess!
The bhikkhus then brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. The Buddha immediately instructed that the group of six bhikkhus be summoned. When they arrived, the Buddha questioned them:
—Did this matter truly occur?
—It truly did, Blessed One.
—From this day forward, one must not bite off only half of a food item to eat.
Thereupon, the Buddha commanded all the bhikkhus residing in the city of Śrāvastī to assemble, and for the sake of ten benefits he established this rule for the bhikkhus—even those who have already heard it must hear it again:
