13. OBSTINATE REFUSAL TO ACCEPT ADMONITION
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Ghositārāma, at Kosambi. At that time, the Blessed One, on account of this matter, assembled the Saṅgha of bhikkhus and addressed the bhikkhus:
"From this day forward, I shall establish the precepts for bhikkhunīs, comprising ten principles of meaning, up to the phrase 'for the long abiding of the true Dharma.'"
Wishing to recite the precept, it should be recited thus:
Whatever bhikkhunī is of obstinate character and will not accept the words of others, when she has been admonished by bhikkhunīs in accordance with the Dharma regarding matters in the training rules, and she herself does not accept the admonition, but says: "Venerable sisters, do not say anything to me, whether good or bad, and I will not say anything to you, whether good or bad. Venerable sisters, desist; do not admonish me." The bhikkhunīs should admonish that bhikkhunī thus: "Venerable sister, you should not yourself refuse to accept admonition.
Venerable sister, you should yourself accept admonition. Venerable sister, admonish the bhikkhunīs in accordance with the Dharma, and the bhikkhunīs will likewise admonish you in accordance with the Dharma. In this way, the assembly of the Buddha's disciples grows and increases, mutually admonishing one another, mutually instructing one another, mutually confessing to one another." When this bhikkhunī, having been admonished in such a way, persists and does not desist, the bhikkhunīs should admonish her three times so that she will desist from this matter.
Up to three times of admonition — if she desists, that is well; if she does not desist, this bhikkhunī commits a third-category saṅghāvaśeṣa offense, requiring relinquishment and acknowledgment.
