Bhūtārocana Sutta: Truthfully Announcing Supernormal Development
Background
The Bhūtārocana Sutta (Bhūtārocana, Pāli) belongs to the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Pāli Canon, the legal discipline of early Buddhism. This sutta is recorded among the training rules of the Sangha, especially offenses related to announcing superhuman attainments (adhimānusika dhammā) in a mistaken or dishonest way.
During the Buddha’s lifetime, the Sangha often faced problems concerning the conduct of bhikkhus. One matter of concern was people falsely or baselessly claiming to possess superhuman attainments, such as kinds of psychic power or lofty meditative concentration, thereby distracting other trainees and damaging the honor of the Buddha’s teaching. The Bhūtārocana Sutta is classified as a Pācittiya, an offense requiring monastics to confess publicly if they violate it.
Main Content
This sutta addresses a basic principle: a bhikkhu must not announce or boast that he has attained superhuman achievements if this is not true, or if he has no firm basis for it. In particular, false claims concerning powers such as concentration (samādhi), wisdom (paññā), liberation (vimutti), or psychic powers (iddhi) are regarded as blameworthy offenses.
The rule was established to protect the truthfulness and integrity of the Sangha. If a bhikkhu announces attainments that are not real, whether unintentionally or deliberately, he must undergo the penalty of confession before the Sangha. This rule emphasizes that those who declare progress in practice must have absolute transparency and adhere strictly to standards of truth.
More deeply, Bhūtārocana also reflects the teaching that real progress on the path of practice should reveal itself through action, way of life, and collectedness of mind, not through speech or proclamation. The Buddha always emphasized direct realization, not merit gained from outward claims.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
