Explanation of the Bhūtārocana Text
Background
The Bhūtārocana text (Bhūta-arocana, meaning "announcing the truth") is a regulation in the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda tradition, belonging to the Pātimokkha, the initial rules that bhikkhus must observe. This regulation belongs to the series of Pācittiya offenses (peccayilla), actions that are lighter but still require confession and return to discipline.
The background for the appearance of this regulation is connected with stories in the early Sangha, when bhikkhus or bhikkhunīs disturbed the community by claiming superhuman powers (iddhi-vidha) without a real basis. The Buddha saw that this caused doubt, loss of faith among lay followers, and conceit within the Sangha, so he established this rule to regulate it.
Main Content
The Bhūtārocana regulation forbids bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs from announcing or boasting about supernormal powers, miraculous abilities (iddhi-vidha), especially superhuman abilities that they do not actually possess or for which there is no authentic evidence. This includes:
Speaking falsely or exaggerating about sacred or spiritual abilities such as flying through the air, passing through walls, transforming the body, or other supernatural phenomena. Even if one has personally witnessed similar phenomena from another person, claiming those powers as one’s own without a basis is still considered an offense.
This regulation is distinct in that it does not forbid speaking about genuine truths. If a bhikkhu truly has miraculous powers, however rare, and announces that truth in honest words, without confusion or exaggeration, then this does not violate the regulation. However, this remains very complex because Buddhism structures training so that practitioners avoid boasting about anything, even meditative attainments.
Practical Meaning
The Bhūtārocana text teaches us the importance of truthfulness (sacca) and humility (appamāda) in the life of practice.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
