Arahant is the fourth and highest of the four noble fruits — a designation for one who has completed the path of liberation as presented in early Buddhism: the taints and roots of clinging that lead to suffering no longer govern them. This is not a social title, a mystical power, or an excited emotional state. The teaching about Arahants focuses on the eradication of greed, anger, and delusion and freedom from identification with body and mind, not on displays for outsiders to speculate about. Learners should not claim an attainment or conclude that someone else has attained it based only on stories, demeanor, or meditation experiences. A safe direction of practice is to return to ethical conduct, concentration, and wisdom; observe suffering and its causes; and let transformation show itself sustainably through humble, harmless, and responsible behavior.
Speaking of liberation does not mean creating another special identity to cling to. The focus is the cessation of conditions that feed craving, clinging, and suffering, not constructing an image of a transcendent person.
Do not self-diagnose attainment
An experience of clarity, bliss, or something unusual is not enough to establish attainment. Traditions of learning and practice place greater weight on ethical conduct, Right View, time, and trustworthy guidance than on self-proclamation.
