The esoteric teaching’s meaning of “birth and death”
In accordance with the Sutra
Gathers this Dharma of Conduct According to Practice.
The True Word practice, the bodhisattva,
The vow without abiding and without equal,
Speech is secret, and body also is secret;
Afterward one performs the corresponding practice.
_ The samaya true word is:
“Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Mẫu Đà Nam (1) Aùn A Tam Minh (2) Để-Ly Tam Minh (3) Tam Ma Duệ (4) Sa-Phộc Hạ ”
Namahï samanta buddhànàmï - Asame trisame samaye _ svàhà.
This mudra is to bring together the Wheels (the fingers),
Secretly join them, and raise the two Empties (the two thumbs).
The five places: crown, shoulders (left shoulder, right shoulder), heart,
And finally add the throat.
Next, form “Dharma-Realm Birth,”
The banner-emblem of secret wisdom,
Purifying the karma of body, speech, and mind,
Turning it throughout one’s whole body.
The Dharma-Realm Birth True Word is:
Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Mẫu Đà Nam (1) Đạt Ma Đà Đổ Sa-Phộc Bà Phộc Cú Hàm (2)
Namahï samanta buddhànàmï - (Ramï)_ Dhrmadhàtu svàbhavaka uhamï
The Prajna hand (right hand) and the Samadhi hand (left hand)
Both make vajra fists.
Together raise the Wind banners (index fingers),
Straight and joined together.
This is called the secret mudra
Of “the purity of the dharma realm.”
Just as the self-nature of the dharma realm,
So contemplate one’s own body directly:
Stainless like empty space,
Through the awesome power of the mudra and true word.
_ Next, form the Turning of the Dharma Wheel,
The Vajrasattva Mudra.
The supreme Dharma empowers,
Causing one to become firm.
The hand of cessation (left hand) and contemplation (right hand) back to back;
The wheels: Earth (little finger), Water (ring finger), Fire (middle finger), Wind (index finger),
Left and right together grasp them.
The two Empties (two thumbs) both revolve,
Joined inside the wisdom palm (right palm):
This is the “supreme Dharma wheel.”
_ The Vajrasattva True Word is:
“ Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Phộc Nhật La Nẫm Phộc Nhật La Đát-Ma Cú Hàm”
Namahï samanta Vajranïàmï _ Vajra atmaka uhamï
When properly reciting this secret word,
One should abide in equipoise.
Contemplate with certainty the image as one’s own body;
It is the Vajra-Bearer.
Immeasurable hosts and great Maras,
All beings see it
As Vajrasattva (Vajrasatva).
Do not give rise to doubt.
_ Next, use Holy Acalanatha
To destroy obstacles and remove defilement,
And to purify all affairs,
Establishing protection in accord with what is fitting.
_ The True Word of the Venerable Immovable One is:
“ Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Phộc Nhật La Nẫm Chiến Noa Ma Hạ Lô Sái Noa Tát-Pha Tra ia Hồng Đát-La Tra Hám Hàm ”
G Namahï samanta Vajranïàmï _ Canïdïa mahà rosïanïa sphatïya Hùmï Tràtï Hàmï Màmï
The Samadhi hand (left hand): the Empty (thumb) presses Earth (little finger) and Water (ring finger).
Wind (index finger) and Fire (middle finger) stand straight at the heart.
The wisdom sword is also like this;
Leaving the sheath, it can fulfill vows.
_ Next, use the Tathagata Hook
To invite the Honored One and the holy assembly.
Corresponding secret skillful means
Teach according to the original vow.
_ The Tathagata Hook True Word is:
“ Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Mẫu Đà Nẫm Aùc Tát Phộc Đát-La Bát-La Để Hạ Đế Đát Tha ghiệt Đảng Củ Xả Mạo Địa Trát Ly-Gia Pha Ly Bố La Ca Sa-Phộc Hạ ”
N Namahï samanta buddhànàmï Ahï sarvatra apratihate Tathàgata anõku’sa Bodhicarya paripùraka svàhà
Cessation and contemplation are interlaced within,
Joined tightly, raising the wisdom wind (index finger of the right hand),
Slightly bent at the tip.
The other wheels are like a circle.
By the power of the holy one’s compassionate vow,
Whoever is invited descends.
Offer the samaya;
The vidya-mudra is as explained before.
Having presented the original vow,
One should certainly correspond with it.
_ Next, one should offer according to one’s capacity,
Showing a sincere mind:
Arghya, incense, food, lamps,
Even a little flower and water.
Or merely operate through mental visualization;
Its superiority is hard to measure.
One should use the universal mudra,
Contemplative practice, and true word.
Whether manifested or not manifested,
All are accomplished.
_ The Universal True Word is:
“ Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Mẫu Đà Nẫm Tát Phộc Tha Khiếm . Ôn Ná Nghiệt-Đế Tát-Pha La Tứ Hàm . Nga Nga Nẵng Kiếm Sa-Phộc Hạ ”
Namahï samanta buddhànàmï Sarvathà khamï udgate sphara hìmamï gaganakamï svàhà.
The Samadhi and Wisdom hands are joined together,
The right crossing over the left at the upper joints.
Operate the mind everywhere in all directions;
Whatever is contemplated appears before one.
After giving food and making offerings,
One should constantly abide in recitation and upholding.
First don the vajra armor,
Corresponding to the work of establishing protection.
_ Vajra Armor True Word:
“ Ná Mạc Tam Mãn Đa Phộc Nhật-La Nẫm. Phộc Nhật-La Ca Phộc Tả Hồng
Namahï samanta Vajranïàmï _ Vajra kavaca Hùmï
First, join the palms hollowly.
Draw out the Wind wheels (index fingers) to hold Fire (middle fingers).
The Great Empties (thumbs) according to the base of Fire (middle fingers)
Touch everywhere and afterward rest at the heart.
_ Next, form the “Directions and Corners Mudra.”
Use the former Venerable Immovable One.
Turning left becomes pacification and removal;
Turning right, throughout above and below,
Touch everywhere over the whole body.
The established protection is all firm.
The true word and mudra
Are distinguished as before.
When the adornment and preparation have been completed,
One should make the root mudra.
Again empower the five places.
Turn seven times, or else three.
Release the mudra, opening it above the crown.
Sit in half-lotus and adjust body and mind,
Or sit in a corresponding posture,
According to the method taught.
Directly facing, abide before one’s body,
Seeing a single round, bright image,
Pure and without concealment,
Like the disk of the full moon.
Within it is the form of the root deity,
Of wondrous color surpassing the three realms,
Silk garments adorning the body,
A jeweled crown and hair hanging down.
Samadhi is quiet and still,
Blazing brighter than lightning,
Like within a clear mirror
Where the true face appears profoundly.
The manifested images are joyful and wrathful,
Holding equality and granting vows.
The body in right absorption corresponds;
The mind is bright and undistracted.
The unmarked: the essence of Dharma is pure.
One should vow to rescue the multitude of beings.
Abide single-mindedly and uphold recitation
Until the required number is completed.
When weary, then rest.
Again form the Universal Mudra,
Sincerely express one’s vow,
And, with deep gratitude, worship the Blessed One.
Turn the sword of the Immovable One to the left,
Releasing the earlier established protection.
Then present the mudra of the root deity,
Open and release it above the crown.
With the mind send it to the holy heaven.
With the five wheels touching the ground, bow.
Afterward rise and proceed with wholesome deeds.
Later sessions are like the first:
Once, twice, three times,
Or four times, all are thus.
Besides this, circumambulate stupas,
Bathe images, turn the Great Vehicle,
Adorn mandalas,
Scatter flowers, and praise the Buddha’s virtues.
Or again, without mixed thoughts,
Concentrate without equipoise.
Through these three purified karmas,
Siddhi swiftly appears before one.
The power of the holy ones and their empowerment
Correspond to practice and vow.
All beings who rejoice in cultivation
Should receive and study according to a teacher.
Those who uphold vidya and transmit the original teaching
Do not transgress samaya (Samaya_ original vow).
Diligent and uninterrupted,
Apart from obstacles and intoxication,
Practicing according to what is learned,
Siddhi is accomplished according to one’s power.
In accordance with the Mahavairocana Sutra,
I have briefly taught the yoga practice.
The supreme merit of cultivation and realization
Pervades all sentient beings.
