OFFERING OF SKILLFUL MEANS

FIRST ASSEMBLY

I take refuge in the perfectly pure Dharmakaya,

The All-Illuminating Wisdom of Vairocana,

Whose wondrously awakened, radiant eyes are half-open,

Broad and long like blue lotus petals.

Now, relying on the sutra, I shall briefly expound

The siddhi method benefiting oneself and others,

The mantras and the sequence of skillful practices,

Opening the supremely wondrous gateway of faith and understanding.

First, one should cause one's own mind to be free of defilement,

And visualize all Buddhas appearing before one.

Clearly contemplate oneself as being in their presence,

And sincerely spread forth wondrous incense and flowers,

Together with every kind of splendid offering.

Behold the mudra and mantra Dharma of the Yidam (the Dharma Mudra and Mantra of the Yidam).

Single-mindedly and reverently perform prostrations.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Prostration is:

Án (1) nẵng mạc tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa (2) ca dã phộc cật-chất đa (3) phộc nhật-la mãn na nam, ca lỗ nhĩ (4)

) OMÏ NAMAHÏ SARVA TATHÀGATA KÀYA VÀK CITTA PÀDA VANDANÀMÏ KARA UMI

Through the truth of this act of prostration,

One is thereby able to prostrate universally to the Buddhas of the ten directions.

Place the right knee upon the ground, join the palms together,

And contemplate repentance for past sinful karma:

“Through ignorance I have accumulated and mastered

All transgressions created by body, speech, and mind.

The three desires—anger and delusion—have obscured my mind.

Against the Buddhas, the True Dharma, and the noble Sangha,

My parents, my two teachers, and spiritual friends,

And immeasurable sentient beings,

Wandering through birth and death since beginningless time,

I have committed endlessly grave transgressions.

Before the manifest Buddhas of the ten directions,

I repent of them all and shall never commit them again.”

“Án (1) Tát phộc bá ba tát-bố tra (2) ná ha nẵng, phộc nhật-la dã (3) sa-phộc hạ”

Homage to the Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times,

The three kinds who ever draw near to the Treasury of the True Dharma,

And the assembly of those with the great bodhicitta and supreme vows.

I now rightly take refuge in them all.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Taking Refuge is:

Án (1) tát phộc một đà mạo địa tát-đát-noan (2) thiết la noản nghiệt xa nhĩ (3) phộc nhật-la đạt ma (4) hiệt-lợi (5)

I purify this body of mine and free it from defilement,

Together with body, speech, and mind throughout the three times,

In numbers exceeding motes of dust and the vast ocean,

And offer them all to every Tathagata.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Offering the Body is:

Án (1) tát phộc đát tha nghiệt-đa (2) bố nhạ bát-la bạt lật-đa nẵng dạ đát-ma nam (3) niết-lý dạ đá dạ nhĩ (4) tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa thất-giả địa để sắt-xá đam (5) tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa nhạ nạn mê a vị thiết đổ (6)

With the pure mind of bodhi and its precious supreme vow,

I now arouse the resolve to save all beings,

Gathering in those bound bodily by the sufferings of birth,

And those harmed in body through ignorance.

I rescue and embrace them, causing them to take refuge and attain liberation,

And shall constantly benefit all sentient beings.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Arousing Bodhicitta is:

Throughout the immeasurable worlds of the ten directions,

The Perfectly and Universally Enlightened Ones form a vast oceanic assembly.

Each, through the power of skillful means,

Together with all Buddha-children, acts for the sake of sentient beings.

Whatever meritorious karma they have cultivated,

I now rejoice in it all.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Rejoicing is:

I now exhort and beseech all Tathagatas,

Those of great bodhicitta, the Saviors of the World:

May you, throughout all realms in the ten directions,

Always draw forth great clouds and pour down the rain of Dharma.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Exhortation and Request is:

May ordinary beings dwelling in their abodes

Quickly cast off all suffering that clings to their bodies.

May they reach the undefiled place (the Stainless Abode)

And abide securely in the pure realm of the Dharmakaya.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Beseeching the Dharmakaya is:

Án (1) tát phộc đát tha nghiệt đa (2) nại thê sái dạ nhĩ (3) tát phộc tát đát-phộc hệ đa lật-tha dã (4) đạt ma đà đổ tất thể để lật-phộc mạt đổ (5)

Whatever wholesome karma has been gained through practice,

For the purpose of benefiting all sentient beings,

I now rightly dedicate it all,

That they may transcend the suffering of samsara and reach bodhi.

The Mantra for the Skillful Means of Dedication is:

Án (1) tát phộc đát tha nghiệt-đa (2) niết-lý dã nẵng-la bố nhạ mê già tam mộ nại-la (3)_ tát-phả la ninh tam ma duệ (4) hồng

) OMÏ SARVA TATHÀGATA NIRYÀTANA PÙJA MEGHA SAMUDRA SPHARANÏA SAMAYE HÙMÏ

In order to purify body and mind universally,

Compassionately rescue and embrace both self and others.

The nature of mind thus becomes free of defilement;

Then seat the body appropriately according to the place.

Clearly and truly contemplate the First Letter-Gate (the gate of the letter A),

With nine hollow, round, white rings around the circumference.

Next, one should form the Samaya Mudra,

Which purifies the pathways of the three karmas.

It should accord with the form of the secret mudra

Taught by all the Perfectly and Universally Enlightened Ones.

One should cause the hands of meditation and wisdom (the two hands)

To be joined, with the two Space Wheels (the two thumbs) held upright.

Touch every bodily part

While reciting and retaining the Words of Truth.

The Mantra for Purifying the Pathways of the Three Karmas is:

Nẵng mạc tam mãn đa một đà nam (1) a tam mê, đát-lý tam mê (2) tam ma duệ sa-phộc hạ

巧休屹亙阢后盍觡袎狣屹伙注屹伙袎屹亙份渢扣桭

NAMAHÏ SAMANTA BUDDHÀNÀMÏ ASAME TRISAME SAMAYE SVÀHÀ

As soon as this secret mudra is formed,

It can purify the Tathagata-ground,

Fulfill the ground of the paramitas,

And establish the three pathways of the Dharma realm.

The various groups of mudras

Will be explained successively in due order.

The mantra practitioner should know

That whatever is undertaken will be accomplished.

Next, form the Dharma-Realm-Born Mudra,

The emblem of secret wisdom.

To purify body, speech, and mind,

Move it over every part of the body.

The hands of prajna and samadhi (the two hands)

Should each form a Vajra Fist.

The two Space Wheels (the two thumbs) are within those palms,

While both Wind Banners (the index fingers, like banners) are held perfectly upright.

This is called the Dharma-Realm

Secret Mudra of Purity.

The Dharma-Realm-Born Mantra is:

Nẵng mạc tam mãn đa một đà nam _ Đạt ma đà đổ tát-phộc bà-phộc cú hàm

巧休 屹亙阢后盍觡袎叻猣四加袎辱矢向人曳桭

NAMAHÏ SAMANTA BUDDHÀNÀMÏ_ DHARMADHÀTU SVABHÀVAKA UHAMÏ

Contemplate one's own body

As being like the intrinsic nature of the Dharma realm.

Or, using the words of truth,

Revolve and proclaim them three times.

One will then perceive oneself abiding in the Dharma-essence,

Stainless like empty space.

The mantra and mudra, through their majestic power,

Should empower the practitioner.

To make this firm and steadfast,

Contemplate one's own body directly as the Vajra Body.

Form the Vajra Wisdom Mudra

And contemplate correctly: join the backs of the hands together.

The Earth Wheels (little fingers), Water Wheels (ring fingers), Fire Wheels (middle fingers), and Wind Wheels (index fingers)

On the left and right support and hold one another.

Both Space Wheels (the two thumbs) are turned inward

And joined within the wisdom palm (the right palm).

This is called the Dharma Wheel,

The Most Excellent Auspicious Mudra.

Before long, this person

Will become equal to the Savior of the World.

Through the majestic power of the mantra and mudra,

The accomplished practitioner will behold

Its constant turning in accordance with reality.

And turns the Great Dharma Wheel

The Vajrasattva Wheel Mantra is:

Nẵng mạc tam mãn đa phộc nhật-la noản (1) phộc nhật-la (2) đát-ma cú hàm (3)

巧休 屹亙阢向忝鉔袎向猦摓人曳桭

) NAMAHÏ SAMANTA VAJRANÏÀMÏ_ VAJRA ATMAKA UHAMÏ

After reciting this Mantra,

One should abide in meditative equipoise,

And clearly contemplate that one’s own body

Is Vajradhara.

Countless heavenly maras

And all beings, when they behold it,

See it as Vajrasattva;

Do not give rise to doubt.

Next, use the Mantra and Mudra

To don the Vajra armor.

One should contemplate that upon one’s garments,

Flames arise throughout the entire body,

Thereby adorning the body.

All maras and classes that cause obstacles,

Together with other malicious beings,

Upon seeing it, all flee and scatter.

Here, the form of the Secret Mudra is as follows:

First form the Sampuṭa.

In the mind, contemplate the two Wind Wheels (the two index fingers) entwining and holding the Fire Wheels (the middle fingers).

The two Space fingers (the two thumbs) rest beside one another

Within the palms.

After reciting that Mantra,

One should contemplate the stainless syllable.

The Vajra Armor Mantra is:

Nẵng mạc tam mãn đa phộc nhật-la noản (1) Án phộc nhật-la ca phộc giá hồng

巧休 屹亙阢向忝冊袎輆 向忝 一向弋 猲桭

) NAMAHÏ SAMANTA VAJRANÏÀMÏ _OMÏ VAJRA KAVACA HÙMÏ

The syllable Ra (先 _RA) is pure white.

Adorn it with the Space dot (劣_RAM),

Like a bright jewel fastened in the hair,

And place it upon the crown of the head.

Even if, throughout a hundred kalpas,

One has accumulated every defilement of sin,

Through this they are all eradicated,

And merit and wisdom are both perfected.

Its Mantra is as follows (also use the Universal Mudra):

Nẵng mạc tam mãn đa một đà nam _ Lam

巧休 屹亙阢后盍觡袎劣

NAMAHÏ SAMANTA BUDDHÀNÀMÏ _ RAMÏ

This Mantra is identical with the Dharma-dhatu

And removes immeasurable sins.

Before long, one will attain accomplishment

And abide on the Stage of Non-retrogression.

Upon every impure place,

One should empower it with this syllable (劣_RAM),

Red in color and endowed with majestic radiance,

Completely encircled by a ring of fire.

To awaken the Earth Deity,

One should recite the following verse:

[Kneel upright on both knees; the Samadhi hand (left hand) holds the vajra horizontally before the heart, while the Wisdom hand (right hand), with all five fingers extended evenly and the palm facing downward, presses upon the earth.]

Next is the Verse Inviting and Exhorting the Earth Deity:

You, heavenly goddess, rendered assistance and protection

To the Buddhas, the Guiding Masters,

As they cultivated the supreme practice

Of the Ground-Purifying Paramita.

Just as the hosts of mara were destroyed

By the Shakya Lion, Savior of the world,

So too shall I subdue mara;

I shall draw the mandala.

THE MAHAVAIROCANA SUTRA ON THE ATTAINMENT OF BUDDHAHOOD, MIRACULOUS TRANSFORMATIONS, AND EMPOWERMENT

THE DHARMA OF THE SECRET MANDALA OF THE BODHIMANDA’S MUDRAS AND SYMBOLIC EMBLEMS

CHAPTER TWO

At that time, the Blessed One again proclaimed the Dharma for entering the secret mandala.

The Udana is:

The Mantra practitioner, the Awakened One,

Who comprehends the Secret Altar,

In accordance with the Dharma, for the disciple,

Burns away all sins.

The disciple’s lifespan is entirely consumed by fire,

Causing it never to arise again.

When it has become ashes,

That lifespan is then restored.

For by means of syllables, syllables are burned;

And through syllables, one is immediately reborn.

All lifespan and birth

Are purified throughout, without defilement.

Use the phrases of the twelve links

To fashion that vessel.

Such is the samaya

Of all the Tathagatas,

The bodhisattvas, the Saviors of the world,

The Buddhas and the assembly of shravakas,

And even all worldly beings:

Equal and without contradiction.

Understanding this vow of equality

And the secret mandala,

One enters all Dharma teachings

And gains mastery over all altars.

My body is equal to that,

And so too is the Mantra practitioner.

Because there is no mutual difference,

It is called samaya.

Before oneself, contemplate the syllable Ra (先_RA)

As a pure and radiant flame,

Like the early morning sun.

Mindfully contemplate its sound and true meaning;

It can remove all obstacles

And eradicate the defilements of the three poisons.

All dharmas are likewise.

First purify the ground of the mind itself,

Then purify the ground of the bodhimanda.

Completely remove all faults,

So that its characteristic is like empty space.

Just as that which is upheld by the Vajra is firm,

This ground is also thus.

Abide in the yoga of the principal deity

And further employ the five component syllables.

Having entered meditative equipoise, direct the visualization,

And one immediately becomes identical with the Venerable Muni.

The syllable A (狣), the color of pure gold,

Is made into the Vajra Wheel

And empowers the lower part of the body;

This is called the Yogic Seat.

The syllable Vaṃ (圳_ VAMÏ), like a pure white moon,

Abides within the mist

And empowers the area directly above the navel;

It is called the Water of Great Compassion.

The syllable Raṃ (劣 _ RAMÏ), radiant like the rising sun,

Is red and rests within a triangle;

It empowers one’s own heart

And is called the Radiance of the Fire of Wisdom.

The syllable Haṃ (曳 _ HAMÏ), like the fire of the kalpa catastrophe,

Is black and rests upon the Wind Wheel;

It empowers the edge of the white urna, at the hairline above the space between the eyebrows,

And is called the Power of Sovereignty.

The syllable Kha with the Space dot (丈 _ KHAMÏ)

Is visualized as becoming all colors;

It empowers the crown of the head

And is called Great Space.

The five syllables are used to adorn the body,

Whose majestic form blazes with radiance.

They extinguish every sinful karma.

Heavenly maras and the classes that create obstacles,

Upon seeing the awe-inspiring Vajra,

The King of a Hundred Lights within the head,

And the stainless eye established there,

Behold the body as identical with the Tathagata.

Again recite the phrase of complete fulfillment:

A noan lãm hàm khiếm

狣圳劣曳丈

A VAMÏ RAMÏ HAMÏ KHAMÏ

Establish the Vessel-World, the material realm:

Space and Wind at the very bottom;

Next contemplate Fire, Water, and Earth

As wheels identical with Vajra.

This is called the Great Mudra.

Pure golden flames of light

All stream forth everywhere.

At that time, the Blessed One

Surveyed the great assembly

And said to the Lord of Mysteries:

“There are symbolic emblems

By which the body is adorned.

Throughout the course of samsara,

Within the great assembly of the Tathagatas,

There are the symbolic emblems of the bodhimanda.

The devas, nagas, and yakshas

Reverently receive the teaching.

The Head Mudra, the Buddha Samadhi,

The Dharma-dhatu and the Dharma Wheel,

The Khadga seal [Khadga: sword mudra], and the joined palms of refuge {palms joined in homage}.”

Bend the Wind [index finger]; press it with the Space Wheel [thumb]

Dharma Conch: join the palms with a hollow center

Bind the Wind [index finger] above the Space Wheel [thumb]

Take the wondrous King of Lotuses

And place it within the Lotus Treasury Realm

The assembly of the Primordial Perfectly Awakened Ones

Arrange the mandala

Secret within the secret

Born from the Womb-Treasury of Great Compassion

Together with the immeasurable worldly

And transcendent mandalas

All their sacred images

Shall now be described in order; listen well

Encircling it on all four sides

Is a single gate with an approach path

Vajra mudras adorn it throughout

At the center is the Karma Vajra

Above it is a great lotus

With a beautiful vajra stalk

Its eight petals are complete with stamens

And adorned naturally with every jewel

It is partly opened and laden with fruit

Upon that Great Lotus Mudra

The point of Great Emptiness forms an adornment

The formula of the Twelve Links of Arising

Pervades the entire lotus dais

Its walls pour forth immeasurable light

A hundred thousand lotuses surround it

Above them, visualize once more

The Great Enlightenment Lion Throne

Adorned with the King of Jewels

Within the great palace itself

Rows of jeweled pillars are arrayed

Banners and canopies are everywhere

Interwoven with jeweled garlands

Beautiful jeweled robes hang down

Clouds of incense and flowers encircle it

Together with every kind of jeweled cloud

They rain down flowers of every kind

Fragrant splendor adorns the ground

Harmonious melodies delight the ear

All kinds of music are offered

Within the palace, visualize sublime purity

With auspicious vases and argha water

The king of jeweled trees (Jeweled Tree King) blossoms

Mani lamps shine forth

Samadhi, the ground of dharani

The maidens of Ishvara

The assembly of Buddha Paramitas

Marvelously adorned with bodhi flowers

Skillful means perform every art

Chanting the sounds of the Wondrous Dharma

Making offerings to all the Tathagatas

By the power of my merit

The empowering power of the Tathagatas

Together with the power of the Dharma-realm

The offerings abide universally

(Universal Mudra)

Form the Great Wheel Mandala Mudra

Next, the Pathways of the Multitudes of the Form Realm

Ra (先 RA) [white, in the center] Ram (劣 RAMÏ) [red, the banner] Ka (一 -KA) [yellow, the flower] Ma (亙 -MA) [blue, pervading everywhere] Ha (成 -HA) [black, the Pathway of the Sound Realm; Vajra Wisdom Mudra]

Contemplate the Mudras and Mantras within that Central Womb [The seed syllables of the honored ones must each be arranged distinctly. First visualize a perfectly circular halo (Round Radiance)]

The luminous moon universally shines

Pure and free from every defilement

At its center is the form of the principal deity

Whose wondrous appearance transcends the three realms

Silken robes adorn the body

A jeweled crown rests above flowing hair

In the samadhi of tranquil quiescence

Its blazing light surpasses lightning

Just as within a spotless mirror

A profound countenance clearly appears

Manifesting expressions of joy and wrath

Holding emblems such as the boon-granting gesture

The body enters corresponding meditative absorption

The mind is lucid and undistracted

The pure Dharma-essence beyond conception

One should vow to save all sentient beings

By means of the eight mandalas

The retinues naturally gather around

Next, in the East: the Seal of Omniscience

In this direction (?the North): Avalokiteshvara

In the South, place Vajrapani

In accordance with the direction of Nirriti (the Southwest)

In the supreme direction (the North), the honored Kshitigarbha

In the direction of the Nagas (the West), Akashagarbha

Together with the Susiddhi (Susidhi: Susiddhikara) retinue

The mighty world-protecting devas

Together with protecting the body and establishing the boundary

Then use the Mudras and Mantras

To summon the assembly of holy ones

The Hook Mudra, Noose, Chain, and Bell

Next display the samaya

Swiftly fulfilling the unsurpassed aspiration

Causing the principal Mantra Lord

Present the argha water

Empower it in accordance with the Dharma

And offer it to the Sugatas

To bathe their undefiled bodies

Next, purify everything

I am born from the Buddha's mouth (the Mantra is: Acala, 21 times)

Next, the Mantra for Offering the Flower Seat is (it removes obstacles and bestows unwavering protection):

Is placed upon the crown of the head

Transforming the body into a sattva

The Mudra for Subduing All Māras,

Corresponding with the True Words.

From the Wisdom Fist (right fist), extend the Wind Wheel (index finger),

And place it at the edge of the urna.

It resembles the form of Bhrikuti.

As soon as this Dharma is formed,

One will see throughout this entire ground

Vajras blazing with fiery light.

They can truly and fiercely dispel

The immeasurable armies of the heavenly Māras,

Together with other kinds of obstructive beings;

All will assuredly retreat and disperse.

In the four directions are the Four Great Protectors:

The Fearless One destroys all fears;

The Protector Difficult to Subdue;

And the Unendurable One universally protects.

For the Treasury Mudra, join the nails of the Water Wheels (ring fingers),

And extend and open the two Wind Wheels (two index fingers).

The Dharma Banner is crowned by a lofty peak,

Showing compassion to all beings without exception.

Upon the lotus dais in the direction of Shakra (the East),

The radiance of the syllable Phộc (向 _VA) transforms into

The Fearless One Who Establishes Protection.

He is yellow in color and wears beautiful white robes;

His face displays slight wrath,

And his hand holds a danda (Danïdïa: staff).

In the direction of the Yakshas (the North), the syllable Phộc (生 _BA)

Becomes the Protector Who Destroys Fear.

He wears white robes and is pure white in color;

His hand holds a khadga (Khadga: sword).

In the direction of the Nagas (the West), contemplate the syllable Sách (戍_SAHÏ),

Which transforms into the One Difficult to Subdue.

His color is like the ashoka flower;

He wears red robes and smiles,

Observing those within the assembly.

In the direction of Yama (the South), Hàm Khiếm (汙 _KSÏAMÏ)

Becomes the Invincible One Who Establishes Protection.

He is black and wears pitch-black garments;

His brows are like Bhrikuti's, and his forehead is furrowed.

Upon his head he wears a crown of knotted hair,

Illuminating the realm of sentient beings.

His hand holds the danda mudra.

Together with all their retinues,

They are all seated upon white lotuses.

Their mantras and esoteric mudras

Have been revealed previously.

At each gate are two Gatekeepers.

For the Invincible One, the Samadhi Fist (left fist)

Raises and opens the Wing Wheel (elbow),

While the Wisdom Fist (right fist) is held at the heart with the Wind Wheel (index finger) extended.

One should contemplate in this manner.

The Facing Gatekeeper raises the Wisdom Fist (right fist)

In this manner, as though thrusting against the other.

SECOND ASSEMBLY

Moreover, O Lord of Mysteries!

The Tathagata's mandala

Is like the pure full moon.

Within it appears the color of a conch shell (lustrous white).

All the Buddhas are within a triangle,

Situated upon a white lotus.

The point of emptiness forms the emblem,

Surrounded by vajra mudras.

From that Lord of Mantras,

Light radiates universally in all directions.

The Buddha sits beneath the Bodhi tree,

Maintaining this Subjugation of the Four Maras.

He can perfect manifold virtues

And bring forth every King of Samadhi.

Next, in its northern corner,

Is the Guiding Teacher, the Mother of all Buddhas,

Brilliant with the color of pure gold.

She wears a robe of white gauze silk,

Illuminating everywhere like the sun,

And abides in samadhi through right concentration.

Next are the Seven Koti

Buddha-Mothers, bodhisattvas, and others.

Again, in the southern direction,

Is the Great Valiant Bodhisattva,

The Great Blissful Amogha.

Vajra Samadhi Treasure

The bodhisattvas who save the world

The Mudra of the Great Virtuous Holy Honored One

Is called Fulfilling the Aspirations of All Beings

The True Cintamani Jewel
