Exposition of the Rahasi Sthānaṁ Sutta
Background
Rahasi Sthānaṁ (a secluded place) is a rule found in the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition. This sutta appears in the context of the Buddha and the Sangha establishing rules of conduct, especially concerning actions that need to be carried out discreetly, limiting the presence of people outside the Sangha or those not yet ready to receive them.
The Vinaya Piṭaka was composed to protect the purity of the Sangha and maintain discipline in practice. This rule reflects the Buddha’s wisdom in building a strong community of practice, where sensitive matters or matters related to internal discipline are handled with care and respect.
Main Content
Rahasi Sthānaṁ instructs that certain matters in the Sangha must be handled in secluded places, not publicly before outsiders or people affected by them. This includes disciplinary cases involving bhikkhus or bhikkhunīs who have violated the rules of practice.
The sutta makes clear that meetings or discussions concerning private matters of the Sangha should take place in a carefully considered space. The purpose is not to conceal the truth or avoid responsibility, but to protect the dignity of the individuals involved, maintain internal harmony, and ensure that decisions are made on the basis of careful consideration and deep discussion, not under the pressure of public curiosity.
The important point is that acting discreetly does not mean a complete loss of transparency. On the contrary, it ensures that decisions are made fairly, in a setting where the Sangha can deliberate freely without being affected by unnecessary outside influences.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
