Bhūtārocana Discourse: Truthful Declaration of Superhuman Attainments
Background
Bhūtārocana (truthful declaration) is a prohibition in the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition. This discourse appears in the Pācittiya section, the offenses requiring confession, of the Vinaya, reflecting the Sangha's deep concern for integrity and the responsibility of monastics in declaring their own spiritual attainments.
This background arose from specific cases within the monastic community, when some bhikkhus made false or exaggerated claims about attainments they had reached, such as supernormal abilities (iddhipāda), divine hearing (dibbasota), or levels of meditative absorption (jhāna). The Buddha taught that such statements must follow the principle of absolute truthfulness, because they relate directly to the ethics of the practitioner and the credibility of the Dharma treasury.
Main Content
The Bhūtārocana discourse lays down the rule that a monastic must not declare superhuman attainments (lokuttara-abhinīhāra) if he has not actually attained them. Specifically, this prohibition applies to publicly asserting that one has attained sacred grounds (bhūmi), such as the divine eye (dibbacakkhu), or profound meditative attainments (samāpatti).
Violation of this is considered a Pācittiya, a type of offense requiring confession before the Sangha and the performance of repentance (patidesanā). The prohibition does not deny the possibility of genuine practitioners, but rather protects the purity of the Dharma treasury from deception and exaggeration.
This rule also implicitly teaches an important principle: spiritual attainments are not a matter of ego or public display, but the true fruit of Dharma practice (dhamma-cāga). If truly attained, these attainments will have their own effect; there is no need to declare them in order to make them more "real" or to increase personal prestige.
Practical Meaning
The deep meaning of the Bhūtārocana discourse extends beyond speech acts alone.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury.
