The Vikappana Sutta: The Rule on Transferring a Burden
Background
Vikappana in the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Theravāda tradition is an important rule concerning the transfer of responsibility and burdens among members of the Sangha. This rule appears in the Pātimokkha, the collection of rules of life for monks and nuns. The context of its arising reflects practical situations in which bhikkhunīs or bhikkhus encounter difficulty in observing matters of training, or need to enter a new life within the community of practice.
In the history of early Buddhism, the Buddha established flexible regulations to ensure that monastics could resolve internal conflicts without violating the spirit of practice. Vikappana is one of the mechanisms of reconciliation and transfer recorded in the Vinaya, showing the Buddha’s wisdom in building a harmonious Sangha.
Main Content
Vikappana refers to the right to transfer responsibility or change one’s status in training when necessary. Specifically, this rule allows a monastic to transfer disputed matters or burdens of practice to another person, or to change one’s position within the Sangha, provided this is done formally and witnessed by the monastic community.
This process of transfer is not arbitrary, but must follow specific principles. First, the person transferring must have a valid reason, such as illness, difficult circumstances, or a conflict that cannot be resolved alone. Second, the transfer must be made in the presence of the Sangha, with the witnessing of fully qualified monastics. Third, the recipient must voluntarily accept the responsibility and not be compelled.
The important point is that Vikappana is not an evasion of responsibility, but an open, transparent act approved by the community. This rule reflects the principle of sangha-samosarna, the unity of the community, a foundation of the Theravāda Vinaya.
Practical Meaning
The Vikappana rule teaches us that on the path of practice, it is not always possible to resolve every matter alone.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
