– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– CLARIFYING THE OPENING SECTION OF THE RULES OF TRAINING FOR THE COMMUNITY:

9. "One must train: one should not enter a layperson's house walking on tiptoe."

When entering a house, if the foot touches the ground, one should not place the toes down first and the heel down afterward; rather, one must place the heel down first and then the toes. If there is a sore on the sole of the foot, one should walk with the foot tilted, and cover the sore with something and bind it, then place the heel down first and the toes down afterward. If one is lax with the sense faculties and does not train in walking with the foot flat, this constitutes disregard for the rule of training. Except in the case of mental derangement, there is an offense. Therefore it is said:

"One must train: one should not enter a layperson's house walking on tiptoe."

When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, as related in full above. At that time, a group of six bhikkhus entered a layperson's house with arms akimbo, and were reproached by people of the world:

—Why do Śākya monastics enter a layperson's house with arms akimbo, just like princes, ministers, and wrestlers? These are people of corrupt conduct — what spiritual virtue do they have!

The bhikkhus then brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. The Buddha immediately ordered the group of six bhikkhus to be summoned. When they had come, the Buddha asked:

—Did this matter truly occur?

—It is truly so, Blessed One.

This is an evil act; from this day forward, one must not enter a layperson's house with arms akimbo.

Then the Buddha commanded all the bhikkhus dwelling in the city of Śrāvastī to assemble together, and for the sake of ten benefits he established a rule of training for the bhikkhus, which all must hear even if they have heard it before:
