10. CAUSING SCHISM IN THE HARMONIOUS SAṄGHA
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain, at the city of Rājagṛha. At that time, the Blessed One, on account of this matter, assembled the Saṅgha of bhikkhus and addressed the bhikkhus:
"From this day forward, I shall establish the precepts for bhikkhunīs, comprising ten principles of meaning, up to and including the phrase 'for the long abiding of the true Dharma.'"
Wishing to recite the precept, it should be recited thus:
Whatever bhikkhunī wishes to cause schism in the harmonious Saṅgha, proceeds to cause schism in the harmonious Saṅgha, clings firmly to the act of causing schism in the Saṅgha, and persists without relinquishing it — the other bhikkhunīs should admonish that bhikkhunī, saying: "Sister, do not cause schism in the harmonious Saṅgha; do not proceed to cause schism in the harmonious Saṅgha; do not cling firmly to causing schism in the harmonious Saṅgha and persist without relinquishing it.
Sister, you should be in harmony with the Saṅgha; for when one is in harmony with the Saṅgha, there is joy and no dispute, sharing one teacher and one teaching, blending in harmony like water and milk — only then, within the Buddha-Dharma, will there be growth and joyful dwelling." If that bhikkhunī, when admonished in this way three times, gives up the matter, that is good. If after being admonished up to three times she does not give it up, that bhikkhunī commits a saṅghāvaśeṣa offense of three applications requiring forfeiture and deliberation.
