– SAṄGHĀVAŚEṢA

1. MATCHMAKING

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling on Vulture Peak Mountain, in the city of Rājagṛha. At that time, the Blessed One, on account of this matter, assembled the Saṅgha of bhikkhus and addressed the bhikkhus:

"From this day forward, I shall establish the training rules for bhikkhunīs, comprising ten principles of meaning, up to and including the phrase 'for the long endurance of the true Dharma.'"

Wishing to recite the precept, it should be recited thus:

Whatever bhikkhunī acts as a go-between, conveying the words of a man to a woman or conveying the words of a woman to a man — whether for the purpose of establishing a marital union, or for the purpose of illicit relations, even if only for a moment — that bhikkhunī, having committed this offense for the first time, must be set aside: a saṅghāvaśeṣa.
