♪ Namo Supreme Dharma of the True Essence Tathagata

If anyone personally receives, upholds, reads, and recites the immeasurable and boundless names of the Buddha Tathagatas, contemplates and recollects them, and reverently cultivates in accordance with them, that person will have no diseases of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, or body. All obstacles will be purified, and no one will be able to subdue that person.

Moreover, that person will attain irreversibility from unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment. All Buddha World-Honored Ones throughout the ten directions will constantly be mindful of that person. Those Buddhas will always guard and protect such sentient beings. Even in dreams, those Buddhas will manifest inconceivable skill, wisdom, and expedient means for them, enabling them swiftly to attain samadhis and the gateways of dharani.

Wherever they are born, they will never be separated from the Buddha World-Honored Ones, and they will be born by transformation from great precious lotuses within the Buddha’s teaching.

Wherever they are born, they will never be separated from the thirty-two marks of a great being, the eighty minor characteristics, and the spiritual powers of the five eyes. They will constantly teach and transform sentient beings, purify Buddha lands, and cultivate the Six Paramitas and the Thirty-Seven Factors of Awakening.

They will not be separated from dhyana, immeasurable samadhis, or the four formless attainments. They will not relinquish the powers, fearlessnesses, eloquence, the Eighteen Distinctive Dharmas, great loving-kindness and great compassion, or great sympathetic joy and great equanimity. They will never be separated from the immeasurable asamkhyeyas of Dharmas of the Buddhas.

Whatever merit those Buddha World-Honored Ones possess, they too will be fully endowed with such merit and will immediately attain peace and bliss. Ultimately, they will attain unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment.

♪ Namo Stainless Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person will immediately attain inexhaustible wisdom.

♪ Namo Sun-Moon-Lamp Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person will attain irreversibility. If any woman hears the name of this Buddha, she will never again receive a female body.

♪ Namo Ambrosial Flow Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, even if another person were to give in charity gold leaf and the seven treasures sufficient to fill the entire world, the merit gained by that person would not equal even one kala of the merit of the person who receives and upholds this name.

♪ Namo Universal Fragrance Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, immeasurable fragrances will issue from every pore of that person’s body. That person will receive every fragrance that perfumes Buddha lands throughout their entirety. Moreover, that person will attain immeasurable and boundless merit.

♪ Namo Pure Radiance Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, even if another person were to give in charity the seven treasures from worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, the merit gained by that person would not equal even one kala of the merit of the person who invokes and praises the name of that Buddha Tathagata.

♪ Namo Supreme Dharma Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person will completely accomplish all Buddha Dharmas.

♪ Namo Great Assembly Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person will completely accomplish all Buddha Dharmas.

♪ Namo Boundless Fragrant Radiance Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person will attain irreversibility.

♪ Namo Fire Radiance Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person’s immeasurable accumulation of merit will continually increase throughout both day and night.

♪ Namo Moon-Lamp Radiance Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, that person will be worthy of serving as a field of merit for the world.

♪ Namo Medicine Master, King of Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata

If anyone invokes the name of this Buddha, all karmic offenses and obstacles of that person will be eradicated.

♪ Namo King of Universal Radiance, Supreme Merit, Praise, and Accumulation Tathagata

♪ Namo King of the Accumulation of Rightly Abiding Mani Jewels Tathagata

If any woman hears the names of these two Buddha Tathagatas, then wherever she may be, she will be able to relinquish the female body. She will also transcend forty thousand kotis of kalpas of wandering through birth and death. She will attain irreversibility from unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment, always see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, and make offerings to the Sangha. In a future life, she will immediately leave the household life and gradually accomplish unobstructed eloquence.

If any good man or good woman cultivating the Bodhisattva Vehicle invokes the name of that Tathagata Jeweled Light Moon-Adorned Head, Majestic Virtue, Radiant Sovereign King, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Completely Awakened One, and also hears, receives, retains, and recites the words of this dharani, then after relinquishing the retribution body in that place, that person will be born as a Wheel-Turning King and encounter a Buddha appearing in the world. Having beheld the Tathagata, that person will make every kind of inconceivable offering, cultivate the pure conduct, and reach the far shore of all spiritual powers.

That person will also attain a dharani called Ten Revolutions, behold Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, transcend a hundred million kalpas of wandering through birth and death, and never forget Unexcelled... At that time, the Blessed One spoke this verse:

Having attained the pure divine eye,
That person’s physical eyes will also become pure
And will behold immeasurable, boundless Buddhas,
As numerous as the sands of the Ganges.

That person will make offerings to all those Buddhas
And receive and retain every Dharma that is heard.
Whenever that person’s eyes behold others,
That person will always exhort them with wholesome words.

♪ Homage to Tathagata Ever-Sounding, Resounding King and all other Tathagatas"

At that time, four bodhisattvas—Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, Bodhisattva Manjusri, Bodhisattva Dharani Sovereign King, and Bodhisattva Vajrapani—together with four Tathagatas—Tathagata Wisdom Torch and the other Tathagatas such as these—were in the Palace of the Sun and Moon.

At that time, the Sun Deva and the Moon Deva both thought:

"How may we remain beside the Tathagatas and bodhisattvas?"

The Tathagatas and bodhisattvas then together proclaimed a dharani called Bestowing Light upon All Sentient Beings, Dispelling the Great Darkness, Most Wondrous and Supreme, Spreading Throughout the Ten Directions:

At that time, Bodhisattva Samantabhadra said to the Sun Deva and the Moon Deva:

"Good men! Out of compassion for sentient beings, this dharani has previously been proclaimed in the presence of eight hundred and eighty million Buddhas.

Good men! The udumbara flower is exceedingly difficult to encounter, yet hearing the words of this dharani is even more difficult.

Good men! The words of this dharani are not easily heard. It is even more difficult for someone to receive, retain, read, and recite this dharani.

Good men! Encountering a Buddha appearing in the world is not so difficult; hearing this dharani is truly extremely difficult.

Good men! Suppose someone, for the sake of the sentient beings in the Avici Hell, those who have committed the five heinous offenses, or those who malign the Right Dharma, remains in the world for one kalpa to benefit those sentient beings. During the six periods of day and night, that person recites the words of this dharani for twenty-one days and cultivates it each day. Through the majestic spiritual power of the dharani, at that very moment the great Avici Hell will be destroyed, and those sentient beings will immediately attain liberation. How much more so will this be true of the merit of a person in Jambudvipa who receives, retains, reads, and recites it!

Those who hear this dharani should know as follows:

'We have been gathered in and protected by the four Tathagatas and the four bodhisattvas, and we have also been gathered in and protected by the Sun Deva and the Moon Deva.' If anyone regularly recites this dharani each day, all karmic hindrances will be purified.

The words of this dharani have been proclaimed by all Buddhas. You should receive and retain them and rejoice in accord.

If any good man or good woman receives and retains this dharani, that person will no longer be fearful of hosts of ghosts and spirits. That person will be reborn, behold Buddha Amitabha face to face, see Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, and also see the Youth Moonlight. Passing from one excellent state to another, that person will abide in wholesome Dharmas and always encounter good spiritual friends.

If any woman is transformed from the female body, know that this occurs through the majestic power of Tathagata Body of the Fragrance of Supreme Sandalwood. She will also attain immeasurable excellent states of a bodhisattva.

Good man! If a bodhisattva receives and upholds this dharani, that person will transcend eight kinds of fear. They are:

[1] the fear of boundless hells,

[2] the fear of boundless animal rebirths,

[3] the fear of boundless hungry ghosts,

[4] the fear of boundless gestation in the womb,

[5] the fear of boundless birth,

[6] the fear of boundless aging,

[7] the fear of boundless illness,

[8] and the fear of boundless death.

All Buddhas of the ten directions will be mindful of and protect that person. When their life ends, their mind will not be confused, and they will be reborn facing the Buddhas. They will obtain an inexhaustible body, and their faculties will be well disciplined.

When these Buddhas formerly practiced the bodhisattva path, they made this vow:

'After we attain bodhi, if any sentient being hears our names and then, with pure faith, receives and upholds those Buddha names, they will all abide in non-retrogression and transcend the eight difficulties. All Buddhas and bodhisattvas will be mindful of and protect them. After their lives end, they will be reborn in a pure Buddha-land. They will be protected by all devas and will remain far removed from every fear.'

Furthermore, if a person remembers without forgetting and receives and upholds the names of these Buddhas, together with the dharanis, verses, and passages, and wishes to see Maitreya Bodhisattva, that person should recite this dharani 100,000 times and make offerings according to their ability.

If they wish to see Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, that person should recite this dharani

200,000 times and make offerings according to their ability.

If they wish to see Vairocana Tathagata, that person should recite this dharani 300,000 times and make offerings according to their ability. After attaining purity of mind, they will give rise to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion. They will abandon all
