Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling at the Yuanji bodhimanda beneath the Bodhi tree, together with the bhikshus, Venerable Shariputra, Venerable Ananda, such assemblies of shravakas, and great bodhisattvas named Vajra Banner Bodhisattva, Vajra Treasury Bodhisattva, and Maitreya Bodhisattva, all foremost among the bodhisattva mahasattvas in the Bhadrakalpa.
At that time Vajra Guhyaka Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "Blessed One, Da Gia A Gia Do A La Ha Tam Mieu Tam Phat Da! (Bhagavate Tathagataya arhate samyaksambuddhaya: Blessed One, Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly and Completely Awakened One). May the Blessed One speak the Good Gate Dharani, to bring illumination for all beings and not allow evils to disturb or harm them. Whether devas, nagas, yakshas, rakshasas, kumbhandas, humans, nonhumans, or beings that steal away the vital essence of people; whether knives and staves, poisons, sorcery, worms and insects; whether eating, drinking, walking, lying down, sleeping, dreaming, or enemies fighting and disputing with one another... if one recites this Dharani, all evils will be unable to disturb or harm one."
Then the Buddha praised Vajra Guhyaka Bodhisattva Mahasattva: "Good, good, Vajra Guhyaka! Now listen well. For your sake I shall speak the Good Gate Dharani, out of the wish to rescue and protect all beings."
He then spoke the mantra:
Da dich tha: uu cuu mau cuu, ma ty ni, man da ni, man da ni, ba la gia loi ni, huu huu, ho hoa da, sa ha
This is the abhisheka chapter and phrase of the Tathagatas, used as a place of protection and upholding.
At that time the Buddha again spoke this mantra:
Da dich tha: Hoa ky hoa ky hoa ky la dat loi, hoa ky la hoa de, hoa ky la ty de, hoa ky la dat de, Gia ca la, hoa ky loi, gia ca la dat loi dat loi mau loi, gia loi huu huu loi da, gia ty be loi, loi loi thi loi thi loi luu luu chi, gia loi chu loi mau loi man tra loi, tat ba ba ba, ty na xa nhi, chi chi dau ty ly, ma ly ha da ni, ba ly ba ly, bat de ty de ty ly, uc sa ly, xa la ty, la hoa ne la, hoa na tra di sa ha ma gia ly noa, nhan da la hoa de de de la gia, nam vo ma he thu ba, la gia ni loi, su pham phu ni, ba ba diem ba ni ca la hoa de, phu da hoa de, tat thich ca hiet, to ma hoa de de, to ma bat la sa ha, diet gia do ca da gia, da dich tha, ha la ha la ha la hi la y dam ma bo gia, ba gia ba, sa ha
Da dich tha: Gia diet da ba diet da, a dat da, a loi diem ba ni, ca gia dat ni, a la tra ha ni, mat gia ty lo ha ni huu ba hoa de, phu sa hoa de hi loi hi loi, gia tha ky, gia tha a can ni, gia tha ba lien gia, gia tha ba viem, gia tha hi, loi da, a viem ba ky la ba ni, to muc khu tha, la ni bat dat ni, da gia de na, ba su da tat ba tat doa na mat tha gia, ca luu na da gia, a ham ba sa di, gia tha de phat ba chi, da tha gia de, a la ha tam mieu bo de ba su da, a de si da, tat tich ba la de nhi na, ty bat tha ty da
Then the Buddha said: "Vajra Guhyaka! Wishing to bring benefit to all beings, I speak this Dharani. Just as the past Buddhas have received, upheld, guarded, and protected it, so too do I guard and protect it."
At that time the Buddha emitted light from the spiral hair on the crown of his head, manifesting the sign of the Great Person, illuminating the ten directions everywhere. The Buddha-worlds, beautifully pervaded (?) by all the Buddhas, each with one voice praised him, saying: "Good, good! Shakyamuni Buddha delights in speaking this Good Gate Dharani to bring illumination for all beings. We too shall receive, uphold, guard, and protect it," and praised him, saying, "Good, good!"
If there is a person who receives, upholds, reads, and recites the Good Gate Dharani, they should practice it in the early morning, and all Buddhas will constantly protect and be mindful of them. The karmic hindrances and retributions of offenses previously committed will gradually be extinguished. That good man will also obtain twenty kinds of merit and virtue.
First, long life; second, living to old age; third, renown; fourth, being heard of afar; fifth, great wealth; sixth, great strength; seventh, upright and handsome appearance; eighth, beautiful complexion; ninth, fine marks; tenth, an adorned body; eleventh, freedom from illness; twelfth, peace and joy; thirteenth, the Buddhas' protective mindfulness; fourteenth, the protection of the devas; fifteenth, maturation of roots of goodness; sixteenth, vigor; seventeenth, not growing weary or abandoning the practice; eighteenth, eloquence; nineteenth, understanding of meaning; twentieth, accomplishment of roots of goodness.
If one receives, upholds, reads, and recites it, one will fully obtain the merits and virtues of the twenty kinds spoken above.
At that time the Buddha said: "Vajra Guhyaka! This Dharani is entirely the secret Dharma treasury of the Buddhas. You should receive and uphold it well; do not let it be lost. It is the dwelling place of the Buddhas."
Then Vajra Guhyaka Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "Blessed One! I too shall speak a Dharani to guard and protect that person. Those who receive, uphold, read, and recite the Good Gate Dharani will not allow any evils to find an opportunity."
He then spoke the mantra:
Ta dich hiet dam, thuc khi thuc khi, chi chi chi chi ba ba, ba ba luu luu, luu luu gia gia gia gia, gia gia gia gia de de de de, pha pha pha pha, ma ma ma ma, ha na ha na ha na ha na, da ha da ha bat gia bat bat gia sa ha
At that time the Buddha again praised Vajra Guhyaka Bodhisattva: "Good, good! Vajra Guhyaka, may all your mantra arts be efficacious and bring benefit to beings. If there are beings that steal away the spirit and vital essence of people, act as a guardian so that those beings find no opportunity to cause harm."
Then King Brahma rose from his seat and said to the Buddha: "Blessed One! If again there is a person who receives, upholds, reads, and recites the Good Gate Dharani, I too, rejoicing accordingly, will speak a Dharani to guard and protect that person, causing that which is invoked by mantra to be efficacious."
He then spoke the mantra:
Da dich tha: De loi, di loi, chi loi, sa ha Ba ha ma phu loi, sa ha Ba ha ma ti, sa ha _ ba la ca ti phat ba tan da ly, sa ha
Then Shakra Devanam Indra rose from his seat and said to the Buddha: "Blessed One! I too shall speak a Dharani to guard and protect that person. If they receive, uphold, read, and recite it, all evils will find no opportunity."
He then spoke the mantra:
Ta dich hiet dam ty ni hoa la ni, hoa da ma la tri chi chi chi co loi, kien da loi, ba la ma la ba, a na ma chan da la ni, da la ma loi ni, gia ca la hoa chi, diem ba loi diem ba loi, sa ha
At that time the four Heavenly Kings rose from their seats and said to the Buddha: "Blessed One! We, the four kings, also shall speak a Dharani to guard and protect that person, not allowing any evils to find an opportunity."
They then spoke the mantra:
Da dich tha: Phat ti tu phat ti, dau ma ba le, ha le ha le, gia ba la xa de, niet muc de, mang gia le, dau de dau de, sa ha
Then Shakyamuni Buddha extended his right arm and rubbed the crowns of Shakra, Brahma, the world protectors, and the present worthies, and praised them, saying: "Good, good! You delight in speaking this Dharani to guard and protect beings, constantly serving as the protection and upholding of the Buddhas."
At that time the Buddha said: "Vajra Guhyaka Bodhisattva! If a good man or good woman receives, upholds, reads, and recites the Good Gate Dharani, they should practice it in the early morning. Then all Buddhas and heavenly spirits will constantly follow, protect, and assist them, causing beings that seek out weaknesses to have no opportunity."
Then Vajra Guhyaka Bodhisattva, the entire great assembly, the devas, humans, gandharvas, asuras, and others, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and respectfully practiced it.
