Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One, having attained perfect enlightenment beneath the bodhi tree, was dwelling within the Great Caitya (mahà caitye: Great Stupa), together with a great assembly of 250 bhiksus. Their leaders included the Venerable Sariputra, the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana, and the Venerable Ananda. These and other great sravakas were foremost among the assembly. Also present was a great assembly of bodhisattvas, whose leaders included Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva, Vajragarbha Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, and Maitreya Bodhisattva. These were foremost among all the bodhisattva mahasattvas of the Auspicious Eon.
At that time, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva (Vajrapànïi Bodisatvàya mahàsatvàya) addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! I pray that the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, will teach sentient beings the wondrous Dharma gate that protects life. Through this Dharma gate, may all sentient beings receive great illumination and great shelter and protection, so that they become fearless of all enemies and evil acquaintances.
Whether devas, yakshas, rakshasas, bhuta ghosts, kumbhandas, humans, nonhumans, or others, none will ever be able to raise malicious thoughts, disturb them, or steal their vital essence. Should they encounter swords, weapons, poisoned food or drink, curses, or other calamities, these will be unable to harm them. Whether sentient beings are walking, standing, sitting, lying down, deeply asleep, or awake, I can protect them in every place.
I pray that the World-Honored One, for the benefit of all sentient beings, will proclaim these various divine mantras. Just as I constantly remain near the Tathagata, serving him and never departing, so at all times, for their welfare, peace, happiness, and benefit, I now entreat the Tathagata on behalf of all good men and good women abiding in the bodhisattva vehicle. Let them not suffer conflict, abuse, humiliation, spying, hearts harboring enmity, the pains of illness, or an untimely death.”
After Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva had made this request, the Blessed One told him: “Excellent! Excellent, good man! For the benefit of sentient beings, you have entreated the Tathagata. Now listen attentively and remember well. I shall now expound for you the Life-Protecting Dharma Gate called the Good Gate.

The Buddha told Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva: “In the past, the Tathagatas, Worthy Ones, and Perfectly Enlightened Ones proclaimed this divine mantra, the Life-Protecting Good-Gate Dharani. They protected it, made great vows concerning it, and established it in truth. Now I too, out of compassion and for the benefit of all sentient beings, make a great vow and establish it in truth; therefore I proclaim this Dharani Mantra.”
At that time, the Blessed One emitted light from the urna between the brows, one of the marks of a Great Man. That light universally illuminated the Buddha lands. Through the Buddha’s miraculous power, all the Tathagatas within those lands saw this light and simultaneously departed from their own lands for the Saha world, arriving where Sakyamuni Buddha was dwelling. They praised him, saying: “Excellent! Excellent! Sakyamuni Buddha is able, for the benefit and protection of all sentient beings, to proclaim this Dharma gate of the Dharani Mantra. It produces illumination, brings joy, and establishes right mindfulness. Therefore, we now extol and praise it.”

At that time, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! For the protection and benefit of good men and good women, I too shall proclaim a dharani.
