Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One (Bhagavān) was dwelling in the palace of the noble bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Āryāvalokiteśvara) on Mount Potalaka. That land contained immeasurable jeweled śāla trees, tamāla trees, campaka trees, aśoka trees, atimuktaka trees, and all kinds of precious trees arrayed all around as adornments. He was accompanied by a great assembly of eight thousand bhikshus.
There were also ninety-nine kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, together with immeasurable hundreds of thousands of devaputras from the Pure Abodes, devaputras of Īśvara, devaputras of Maheśvara, and devaputras of Mahābrahmā, all foremost among their kind. Together with immeasurable hundreds of thousands of other devas, they surrounded the Buddha before and behind and listened as he taught the Dharma.
At that time the noble bodhisattva-mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt with his right knee upon the ground, faced the Buddha, joined his palms, and, with a serene countenance and a smile, addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! I possess a heart-dhāraṇī called the Amoghapāśa. Ninety-one kalpas ago, in the distant past, there was a world called Vilokitāyām.
The Buddha there was named Lokendrarāja Tathāgata. From that Buddha I received the Amoghapāśa Heart-Dhāraṇī.
“World-Honored One! Because I received and upheld that dhāraṇī, I taught immeasurable hundreds of thousands of devaputras of the Pure Abodes, devaputras of Īśvara, and devaputras of Maheśvara, causing them to turn toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, unsurpassed perfect awakening. Through the power of that merit, I immediately attained a billion samādhis, foremost among them being the wondrous knowledge free from delusion.
World-Honored One! Wherever this Heart-Dhāraṇī is present, Maheśvara and two billion devas will come to protect that place as though it were a caitya of the Buddha. World-Honored One!
Wherever this Heart-Dhāraṇī abides, one should know that the sentient beings there have planted roots of virtue before immeasurable hundreds of thousands of kotis and nayutas of hundreds of thousands of Buddhas.
“World-Honored One! Suppose a person who hears this Heart-Dhāraṇī formerly committed evil karma, practiced what is contrary to the Dharma, insulted the worthy and virtuous, slandered the true Dharma, and slandered all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas, and was therefore certain to fall into the great Avīci Hell. World-Honored One!
If, upon hearing this Heart-Dhāraṇī, that person gives rise to remorse and shame, observes the fasting precepts for one day and one night, and recites this dhāraṇī, all such sinful karma will immediately be extinguished. Alternatively, all that person’s sinful karma may ripen in the present life as light retribution: fever for one or two days, or as long as seven days; pain in the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, lips, teeth, gums, palate, heart, abdomen, navel, flanks, hands, feet, joints, or other parts; hemorrhoids, dysentery, constipation, leukoderma, or leprosy; sores, ringworm, black boils, red boils, suppurating boils, or pustules; madness or epilepsy;
affliction by sorcery, poison spells, bondage, beating, slander, abuse, humiliation, other evils that torment body and mind, or strange dreams.
I now declare that by undergoing such retribution in the present, even the evil karma leading to Avīci is extinguished. How much more, then, will all the sinful karma of pure beings who faithfully receive and uphold this dhāraṇī be extinguished!
“World-Honored One! Suppose sentient beings hear me teach the Amoghapāśa Heart-Dhāraṇī with flattering and deceitful minds and merely pretend to receive and uphold it; or they copy it themselves, have others copy it, cause others to hear and receive it, or even recite this Heart-Dhāraṇī beside the ear of an animal and contemplate the phrases of the dhāraṇī. Because they do not slander it; because it is signless, unborn, free from discrimination, gradually approached, uncreated, free from defilement, equal, never abandoned, and apart from the skandhas—when they cultivate accordingly through skillful means, a thousand Buddhas will appear before each of them.
When practitioners see them, all their sinful karma will be extinguished. World-Honored One! To speak briefly, even one who copies this sutra, places it in the home, bows to it, and makes offerings will obtain immeasurable and boundless merit.
How much more will this be so for one who receives, upholds, reads, and recites it!
“World-Honored One! Some sentient beings each wish to surpass others. Some fear rulers, enemies, vicious beasts, or perilous calamities.
Some follow others, seek honor and rank, or seek wealth and treasures, and therefore listen to this Heart-Dhāraṇī Sutra. Although they hear it, they do not give rise to reverence and may slander, scorn, damage, or criticize it. Yet through the majestic spiritual power of bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, even such persons are caused to generate supreme merit.
It is like a person who takes sandalwood, aloeswood, musk, or other incense, reviles, damages, criticizes, and grinds it into powder, and then applies it to the body. Those fragrant substances never think, ‘Because this person has damaged and criticized us, we shall conceal our fragrance and not allow it to be used.’ The intrinsic fragrance of sandalwood and the other substances naturally performs its fragrant function.
World-Honored One! This Heart-Dhāraṇī is likewise. Although people slander, damage, or criticize it, or flatteringly and deceitfully copy, receive, uphold, and make offerings to it, all these acts nevertheless become causes and conditions for roots of virtue.
Wherever they are born, they will never be separated from the stores of merit belonging to morality, samādhi, and wisdom; and in a future life they will be fully endowed with the fragrance of morality.
“World-Honored One! If a good man or good woman, a bhikshu or bhikshuni, an upāsaka or upāsikā, single-mindedly observes the fasting precepts on the eighth day of the month, does not converse with others, and recites this Amoghapāśa Heart-Dhāraṇī seven times, that person’s body will obtain twenty supreme benefits in this life. What are the twenty?
1_ The body will have no other illness.
2_ Illnesses arising from former karma will swiftly be extinguished.
3_ The body will be radiant and the skin soft, gladdening all who see it.
4_ People will love and respect that person, and the sense faculties will be invisibly protected.
5_ That person will acquire wealth and treasures.
6_ Having acquired wealth and treasures, they will not be plundered by thieves or bandits.
7_ That person will not be swept away by water or burned by fire.
8_ That person’s possessions will not be forcibly seized by rulers.
9_ All undertakings will be successfully completed.
10_ Crops that have been planted will not be damaged by destructive winds, heavy rain, frost, hail, or insects.
11_ If this Heart-Dhāraṇī is recited seven times over ashes, which are then scattered in the eight directions, above and below, to establish a boundary, all calamities will be extinguished.
12_ Evil spirits will not steal that person’s vital essence.
13_ All sentient beings will love that person and rejoice upon seeing them.
14_ That person will not fear enemies.
15_ Even if enemies exist, reconciliation will quickly be achieved.
16_ That person will not fear harm by humans or nonhumans; sorcery, poison spells,邪 spirits, and demons will be unable to injure them.
17_ That person will be free from fierce afflictions and secondary afflictions.
18_ Injuries caused by fire, blades, or poison will not result in death.
19_ Devas and benevolent spirits will always protect that person.
20_ Wherever that person is born, they will never be separated from loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.
One should seek these twenty supreme benefits.
“There are also eight dharmas. What are the eight?
1_ At the time of death, the noble bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara will assume the appearance of a bhikshu and manifest before that person.
2_ At the time of death, that person will peacefully relinquish life without suffering.
3_ At the time of death, right mindfulness will be present and the mind will not be confused.
4_ At the time of death, the hands will not flail and the legs will not convulse.
5_ At the time of death, that person will not soil themselves with urine or feces.
6_ Even if ill, that person will not be bedridden.
7_ At the time of death, that person will not die lying face downward.
8_ At the time of death, that person will attain inexhaustible eloquence. After death, they will be reborn according to their aspiration in a Buddha’s Pure Land and will never be separated from spiritual friends.
“World-Honored One! If good men or good women abstain from alcohol, meat, pungent plants, and contact with cruel deeds, and privately recite this Heart-Dhāraṇī Dharma-gate three times during each of the three periods every day, their supreme merit will increase day and night. They will clearly know which sentient beings possess strength and which do not, and will teach the bodhisattva path according to the disposition of those who listen.
They should not cherish or conceal it. Forever freed from the evils of stinginess and jealousy, and constantly acting for the benefit of all sentient beings, they will swiftly advance toward bodhi and enter the stage of a bodhisattva. ‘Bodhi’ here denotes prajñā, while ‘sattva’ denotes skillful means. These two dharmas bring every benefit and happiness to sentient beings.
“World-Honored One! I now wish to bring benefit and happiness to the fourfold assembly and to other sentient beings who have committed sinful karma. I pray that the World-Honored One will compassionately permit me to teach this Heart-Dhāraṇī before the Tathagata.”
The World-Honored One then said to the noble bodhisattva-mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara: “Pure Sentient Being, now is the proper time! I also rejoice in this Heart-Dhāraṇī. In the future age it will serve as father and mother to practitioners of the Bodhisattva Vehicle and cause the endeavors of bodhisattvas to be swiftly accomplished.”
The noble bodhisattva-mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara gazed upon the Honored One’s countenance without looking away even for a moment and addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! May the Tathagata hear me proclaim this dhāraṇī, which is worthy of the reverence of all bodhisattvas. This Dharma-gate of liberation compassionately cares for the world and brings benefit and happiness to immeasurable sentient beings. Those who wish to receive and uphold it should first pay homage to the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, pratyekabuddhas, and śrāvakas of the three times.
“Homage to those who have rightly gone and rightly practiced (Samyaggatānāṃ Samyak-pratipannānām).
“Homage also to the great and wise śrāvakas headed by Śāriputra.
“Homage also to the foremost bodhisattva-mahāsattvas headed by Maitreya.
“Homage to the Tathagata Suvarṇavarṇa-supratibhāsa-vinarditeśvararāja.

“Homage to the Tathagata Apratihata-bhaiṣajyarāja.
“Homage to the Tathagata Vikrāntagāmin.
“Homage to the Tathagata, arhat, perfectly awakened one Atītānāgata-pratyutpanna.
“Homage to the Three Jewels (Ratna-traya).
“Homage to the noble bodhisattva-mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara, the greatly compassionate one endowed with the heart of great compassion (Āryāvalokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya mahāsattvāya mahākāruṇikāya).
“Having paid homage to these noble ones, one should recollect the words spoken by the noble bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara before the Tathagata when proclaiming the Heart-Dhāraṇī: ‘I too shall now proclaim this dhāraṇī. May all my undertakings be swiftly accomplished, and may all my fears be removed.’”
The noble bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara then proclaimed the dhāraṇī:

This Heart-Dhāraṇī is efficacious whenever recited, and every undertaking will be accomplished. If one recites it three times in each of the three periods every day, the five heinous offenses will all be extinguished and every karmic obstruction purified. Burn aloeswood incense, or scatter ashes, water, or white mustard seeds to establish a boundary. Alternatively, make stakes from khadira wood, recite the dhāraṇī over them twenty-one times, and drive them into the four directions.
For any illness involving heat, cold, fever, or malaria, recite the dhāraṇī over thread, knot it into a cord, and wear it; the illness will be cured. For the sick, recite it over ghee or water and have them drink it or apply it to the body; they will immediately be cured. For affliction by sorcery or poison spells, make an effigy of the person from flour, clay, wax, or another substance and sever it with a knife.
Also have the afflicted person continually wear a dhāraṇī cord. For abdominal pain, recite the dhāraṇī over salt water and give it to the person to drink. For any poisoning, recite it over earth or water and either apply it or drink it; the poison will immediately be neutralized.
For an eye disorder, recite it over white thread, make a cord, and hang it on the person’s ear. For aching fangs or teeth, recite it over a karavīra twig and chew it. To establish a boundary, make stakes from khadira wood and drive them into the four corners; recite the dhāraṇī twenty-one times over a five-colored cord and wind it around the inside of the stakes.
To protect oneself or others, wear a dhāraṇī cord, or recite the dhāraṇī over water or ashes and sprinkle them upon the body. For any illness caused by spirits, recite it over five-colored thread, make a cord, and wear it. For any febrile illness, recite it over white thread, make a cord, and wear it.
For any malignant boil, severely swollen flesh, or obstruction of the throat, mix honey with pippalī, recite the dhāraṇī over it, and give it to the person to drink. For an eye disorder, recite it over scented water, palāśa water, or licorice water and wash the eyes with it. For an earache, recite it over sesame oil and drip it into the ear.
When facing battle, litigation, slander, or dispute, recite the dhāraṇī over water and wash the face with it. To protect a royal capital or village, fill four jars with water and arrange a great offering of food and drink. The reciter should put on clean new robes and recite this dhāraṇī; auspiciousness will immediately arise. Sprinkle that water throughout the region to protect all sentient beings, and every calamity will be extinguished. For an illness caused by邪 influences, grind sandalwood in water, recite the dhāraṇī over it twenty-one times, and apply it over the person’s heart.
If one has committed the four grave offenses, the five rebellious offenses, or offenses leading to Avīci, one should constantly recite this dhāraṇī, and those offenses will be extinguished. To protect a house, take 108 lotus flowers, recite the dhāraṇī once over each, and burn them in a fire. To cause all sentient beings to become harmonious and compliant, take 108 pieces of sandalwood, each two cun long, recite the dhāraṇī once over each, and burn them in a fire.
If troubled by spirits or fear, take the herbs Jaya, Vijaya, Nākulī, Gandha-nākulī, Dhāraṇī, Abhayapāṇi, Indrapāṇi, Gandha-priyaṅgu, Tagara, Cakrā, Mahācakrā, Viṣṇukrāntā, Somarājī, Sunanda, and other such herbs; pound, grind, and sift them, then mix them with water and form pills. Place them upon the head, bind them to both arms, or hang them around a child’s neck, and all fear of spirits will be extinguished. If a woman of scant merit is disliked and despised by others and wishes to seek a son, she should put on clean new clothes, recite the dhāraṇī twenty-one times over water containing these herbs, and bathe her body with it.
She will obtain supreme merit, her inauspicious features will disappear, and if she seeks a son she will obtain a son; she will gain every benefit. Poison and fire will not harm her, and she will encounter no unexpected calamity. When destructive winds, torrential rain, a house fire, hail, or similar calamities occur, recite the dhāraṇī twenty-one times over water and sprinkle it in the four directions.
Alternatively, recite it twenty-one times over a staff of karavīra wood, wave it, and point it into the sky; the winds will immediately cease. Thus does the Great Heart-Dhāraṇī of the noble bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara accomplish supreme undertakings.
One who has not yet attained accomplishment should paint an image of the Buddha upon white silk. Mix the pigments with glue made from fragrant substances and use no other glue. Beside the Buddha, paint an image of bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara with a golden-white body, deep blue hair hanging down, a floral crown upon his head, and a black antelope skin (jināya) draped over him in the manner of Maheśvara.
His bracelets and other ornaments should all be adorned with precious jewels. Before beginning to paint, the artist should first undertake the eight fasting precepts. After the image has been completed, make before it a mandala of cow dung approximately sixteen chi wide and scatter white flowers upon it.
At the eight directions of the altar place eight jars filled with scented water, and arrange eight portions of food, or sixty-four portions. Make offerings in this manner, excluding pungent plants. Burn aloeswood incense and abstain from food for three days and three nights, or for one day and one night.
If one eats, one should consume only the three white foods. Bathe three times each day, put on clean new robes, and recite the dhāraṇī 1,008 times. When the recitation is completed, the practitioner will see before the image that their own body emits blazing light like a mighty fire.
Having seen this, they will give rise to joy. The noble bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara will then manifest before that person and cause all their wishes to be fulfilled. If one wishes to become invisible, take realgar or añjana, recite the dhāraṇī over it 1,008 times, and one will become invisible, travel through the sky, attain the supreme samādhi called the Ornament of Knowledge Free from Delusion (Asammoha-jñāna-vyūha-nāma Samādhi), and accomplish everything one desires.”
When this had been spoken, the Blessed One joyfully praised it. The noble bodhisattva-mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara, the lord of the Pure Abodes, the lord of the Sahā world, Īśvara, Maheśvara, the bodhisattvas, the great śrāvakas, and the others rejoiced in what the Buddha had taught and faithfully practiced it.
