佛說三轉法輪經
Chinese title:佛說三轉法輪經
Thus have I heard. At one time the Bhagavān (Bhagavaṃ: World-Honored One) was dwelling in the Deer Park at the Place Where the Ṛṣis Descended (Mṛgadāva: the Forest given over to the deer to live joyfully) in the country of Vārāṇasī.
At that time the World-Honored One addressed the five Bhikṣus, saying: "O Bhikṣus! This Noble Truth of Suffering (Duḥkha-āryāṇisatyāṇi), with respect to the Dharma that has been heard, by wise attention can give rise to Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening [This names individually the Knowledge within the Path of Seeing (Darśana-mārga). The Receptivity to the Dharma-Knowledge of Suffering (Duḥkhe dharma-jñāna-kṣāntiḥ) is the Eye; the Dharma-Knowledge of Suffering (Duḥkhe dharma-jñāna) is the Knowledge; the Receptivity to the Subsequent Knowledge of Suffering (Duḥkhe'nvaya-jñāna-kṣāntiḥ) is the Clarity; the Subsequent Knowledge of Suffering (Duḥkhe'nvaya-jñāna) is the Awakening].
O Bhikṣus! The Dharma of the Origin of Suffering (the Noble Truth of Origination: Samudaya-āryāṇisatyāṇi), of the Cessation of Suffering (the Noble Truth of Cessation: Nirodha-āryāṇisatyāṇi), and of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering, the Noble Truth (the Noble Truth of the Path: Mārga-āryāṇisatyāṇi)—with respect to this, by wise attention, can give rise to Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening.
O Bhikṣus! This Noble Truth of Suffering (Duḥkha-āryāṇisatyāṇi) is the Dharma to be fully understood; thus should it be known. With respect to the Dharma that has been heard, by wise attention, it can give rise to Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening.
O Bhikṣus! This Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering (Samudaya-āryāṇisatyāṇi) is the Dharma to be fully understood; thus should it be cut off. With respect to the Dharma that has been heard, by wise attention, it can give rise to Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening.
O Bhikṣus! This Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering (Nirodha-āryāṇisatyāṇi) is the Dharma to be fully understood; thus should it be realized. With respect to the Dharma that has been heard, by wise attention, it can give rise to Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening.
O Bhikṣus! This Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering (Mārga-āryāṇisatyāṇi) is the Dharma to be fully understood; thus should it be cultivated. With respect to the Dharma that has been heard, by wise attention, it can give rise to Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening.

O Bhikṣus! If I, with respect to the Dharma of these Four Noble Truths (Catvary-āryāṇisatyāṇi), had not fully comprehended the Twelve Aspects of the Three Turnings, then Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening would all have failed to arise. Then I would not, among the Devas, Māras, Brahmās, Śramaṇas, Brāhmans, and all the Worlds (Loka)…, have let go of the Mind of afflictions (Kleśa-citta), would not have attained liberation (Vimukti), and could not have realized the Unsurpassed Awakening (Agra-bodhi).
O Bhikṣus! Because I, with respect to the Dharma of these Four Noble Truths (Catvary-āryāṇisatyāṇi), have understood and fully comprehended the Twelve Aspects of the Three Turnings, Eye, Knowledge, Clarity, and Awakening have all arisen; and so, among the Devas, Māras, Brahmās, Śramaṇas, Brāhmans, and all the Worlds (Loka)…, I have let go of the Mind of afflictions (Kleśa-citta), have attained liberation (Vimukti), and have been able to realize the Unsurpassed Awakening (Agra-bodhi)."
At that time, when the World-Honored One had spoken this Dharma, the Venerable Kauṇḍinya (Kauṇḍimya) together with eighty thousand Devas were freed from dust, departed from defilement, and attained the purity of the Dharma-eye.
The Buddha said to Kauṇḍinya: "Have you clearly understood this Dharma?"
He replied: "I have clearly understood it."
The World-Honored One: "Have you clearly understood this Dharma?"
He replied: "I have clearly understood it."
The Sugata: "Because Kauṇḍinya has understood and fully comprehended the Dharma, on account of this he shall henceforth be called Ājñāta-kauṇḍinya (Ājñāta-kauṇḍimya)" [Ājñāta means to understand and fully comprehend].
At that moment the Earth-Dwelling Yakṣa (Bhūmy-avacara-yakṣa), having heard the Buddha finish speaking, raised a great voice and proclaimed to humans and gods, saying: "You should know that the Buddha is dwelling in the Deer Park at the Place Where the Ṛṣis Descended (Mṛgadāva) in the country of Vārāṇasī, extensively expounding the Dharma-Wheel of the Three Turnings and Twelve Aspects. By this, He brings great benefit to gods, humans, Māras, Brahmās, Śramaṇas, Brāhmans, and all the Worlds. He causes those who share the holy life (Brahma-caryā) to swiftly reach the peace and security of Nirvāṇa; gods and humans increase in number, and the Asuras (Asura) diminish."
Because that Yakṣa (Yakṣa) made such a proclamation, the Devas dwelling in the open sky and the multitudes of the Four Great Kings all heard and knew of it. Thus it spread onward, and within the space of an instant it had reached throughout the Six Heavens of Desire (the Six Heavens of the Desire Realm). In a moment it then reached the realm of the Brahmā gods (Brahma-deva), where all everywhere heard that resounding echo. The Brahmā Multitude, having heard it, likewise proclaimed it everywhere, extensively as before. For this reason this Sūtra is called the Three Turnings of the Dharma-Wheel (the three turnings of the Wheel of Dharma).
When the five Bhikṣus, together with the assembly of humans and gods, had heard the Buddha finish speaking, all rejoiced and reverently put it into practice.
