I take refuge in the one whose voice is the Lion's roar
Who brings forth all wholesome deeds
In whom the nature of all things is clear as it truly is
The Unconquered Wisdom that beholds all things
Skillfully teaching sentient beings without limit of time
Again expounding the many Dharma-gates
First shattering utterly the egg of ignorance
Accordingly understanding clearly all those dharmas
Clearly knowing sentient beings, the one of Great Rectitude
The subtle and wondrous awakening, the master of all dharmas
In the principle of non-self he has clearly understood
Skillfully understanding that all karmas are self-nature
Clearly knowing all divided realms
Clearly knowing arising and ceasing, their nature from of old
In all the dharmas of suffering, clear as they truly are
Skillfully understanding the true self-natures
Skillfully able to awaken without disturbance
The self-nature of the world he fully understands
Destroying evil views, his wisdom opening to brightness
Clearly knowing all causes and effects
Clearly knowing the marks of the three realms, departing from them
Therefore he must cultivate all the deeds hard to do
His body never weary, grasping at marks gone
Even the smallest dharmas he does not forsake
With ultimate skillful means he gathers and transforms
Proclaiming the Middle Way, the gates of all dharmas
Excellent indeed is Lord Śākyamuni
I bow, take refuge, and make offering
Supreme is the speech of the one of stillness
Supreme, most victorious, my Teacher
Skillfully gathering sentient beings, their minds all joyful
In all things and their marks he does not grasp
Complete in the two kinds, worthy of praise
Skillfully accomplishing the Four Means of Gathering
The Six Harmonies, reverence for the Dharma, skillfully proclaimed
The Six Constant Practices, fully accomplished
Establishing deep and far the Right View
Attaining those samādhis, skillful and serene
In that wholesome Dharma the mind is not let loose
The certain realization of Buddhahood prior at the place of awakening
Clearly knowing deep and far the master of the right path
Opening deep and far the bright illumining wisdom
Therein no seeking, no inferior path
I bow my head to the Tathāgata, the one who has realized
The gathered one of wisdom in clear understanding
The subtle, deep, and far—all fully known
Revealing the two kinds of the realm of Nirvāṇa
Fully realizing all the paths of Nirvāṇa
Sentient beings, through the long night, give rise to falsehood
The Buddha by skillful means speaks, with no false dharma
Sentient beings drift and float in the mire of birth-and-death
The Buddha for their sake extends his hand, skillfully delivering them
Sentient beings, according to their lot, dwell in evil realms
The Buddha by skillful means rescues them from peril
These sentient beings give rise to fear
The Buddha for their sake points to the place of no fear
Of himself complete in vast and great spiritual power
His body manifesting all beautiful marks
Within, his mind precious, wholesome, full of brightness
Solely expounding the right Dharma, hard to be matched
The Buddha does not subdue others for his own sake
None at all can be other than the Buddha
Abiding in all places of joy
The Buddha's marks are all complete
Unsurpassed wondrous conduct, performed in truth
Like a blossoming lotus, wisdom pure
The accumulated holy life, exhausted without remainder
I bow my head to the holy life he has established
Solely aiding the world, the master of the Vedas
Not destroying anything, teaching the holy Dharma
Washing away all defiling sins
Attaining the foremost, supreme Dharma
Skillfully able to accomplish the Dharma that powerfully removes
Skillfully able to point the way to stillness
The Guide reveals the gate of skillful joy
The wilderness of saṃsāra he makes a good road
Ever apart from all places of darkness
Opening the divine eye that ever observes
Ultimate, undefiled, the one of purity
Sin and merit unmoved, accomplishing liberation
Able in his own body to contemplate the nature of emptiness
Craving and views utterly ended, skillful and undefiled
In the realm of desire he leaves behind the mind's conceiving
Apart from defiling afflictions and discrimination
His mind again serene amid his work
Naturally within the Dharma attaining liberation
The supreme and serene Great Muni
All pure, the one without defilement
His world-transcending merit truly vast and great
Skillfully giving the world a great light
The world, in its realm of falsehood, ever deludedly contemplates
Conceiving all dharmas as full of truth
The cord of craving severed, his spiritual powers complete
Skillfully bringing forth the great radiance of wisdom
Destroying all their minds of grasping and defilement
In all his joyful intentions, pure
The Tathāgata has departed from all error
Therefore one must reverently bow and make offering
Removing all dharmas unbeneficial and evil
All conjoined with benefit
The Buddha is the good friend of sentient beings
The footless and the two-footed, the foremost
Abiding in mindful wisdom amid all natures
Skillfully complete, never forgetting that Dharma
The Buddha, in the self-nature of meaning and non-meaning
Harmoniously relying yet not clinging
The fear of this shore of birth-and-death already removed
He should realize Nirvāṇa, the bliss of the further shore
The Buddha skillfully relies upon the proper right path
Listening, his mind neither erring nor diminishing
Among all the pure ones, the Buddha is highest
Vast and great in form and marks, his wisdom-radiance shining
The world is drowned in the savor of desire
The Buddha's wisdom has ever skillfully gone far from it
With wisdom he praises the gate of Nirvāṇa
I bow my head to the Tathāgata who speaks with certainty
Seeing undefiled and thinking undefiled
Undefiled speech together with undefiled karma
Undefiled livelihood together with undefiled diligence
Undefiled mindfulness together with undefiled concentration
Undefiled liberation, undefiled wisdom
In morality, concentration, and wisdom skillfully abiding
All fetters wholly severed and removed
Destroying the afflictions amid inversion
The Tathāgata, where the holy life is born
Has dwelt in the truly cool ground
In all his deeds the one of stillness
Undefiled by the world, the one revered and beloved
Again able to sever the five lower fetters
Again able to fulfill the six-part Dharma
Giving rise to the one impartial mind that guards mindfulness
The four intentions accomplished, again without lack
Pure and single, true, with no other thought
Impartially giving and relinquishing love in the world
Without error, his thinking a true and right mind
Again attaining ease in all places
A mind well liberated, a wisdom well liberated
Pure and single in the holy life, skillfully established
The Tathāgata, supreme Great Man
Therefore I take refuge broadly and offer praise
I bow my head to the Great Arhat
Apart from name, apart from mark, apart from station
Departing from name and mark, the gate of stations
Name, mark, and station all stilled
Skillfully seeing the mind able to quench the fire of desire
The realm of desire, craving, and defilement all removed
In those desires and defilements he leaves behind grasping consciousness
And leaves behind all the faults of desire
Skillfully cultivating the seven kinds of contemplation
Skillfully expounding the Dharma-gate of the limbs of awakening
In all things excelling far beyond others
The Buddha is the valiant and fearless one
Apart from delusion, severing defilement, surpassing all
The power of morality increasing, the lake without fault
Fully endowed, his good wisdom subtle and wondrous
Gathering within all merits
Without doubt, apart from defilement, ever joyful and content
Again halting the world's many roots of falsehood
The Great Śramaṇa's work already accomplished
I bow my head to the truth, the one of joy
The Buddha, surpassing the Manu, foremost of all
I bow my head to the Tathāgata beyond compare
With right mindfulness able to contemplate all awakenings
Not for the sake of subduing others does he subdue them
Again attaining stillness with nothing to be done
I bow my head to the King of Bulls, the lofty one
Immeasurably deep and far, abiding in silence
Right wisdom ever practiced, conduct of bliss
Like this Dharma and discipline, truly dignified
I bow my head to the one of solemn body and serene mind
His practices complete, his speech excellent
His body manifesting the dhūta austerities, marks hard to achieve
His words without frivolous talk, abiding in right truth
I bow my head to the one apart from desire, the one of right livelihood
The Tathāgata lofty and again sovereign
Like Śakra amid the heavenly realm
Inclining toward the right and skillful contemplation
His language humble yet gentle
All purity, truly pure
Skillfully loving without attachment, vastly pure
His merit matured, his provisions complete
I bow my head to the one who has come to the highest
The Buddha is the supreme Sage-King
Broadly accumulating merit, full and undiminished
His pure conduct already complete, deceit already removed
I bow my head to right enlightenment amid radiance
His body and mind pure and again gentle
Halting all enmities
Of serene and great wisdom, the master of great wisdom
The root of wrath and anger removed, ever joyful
Among those sentient beings, hard is it to be his equal
Beyond reckoning, apart from all defilements
In his body penetrating, without doubt
I bow my head to the Able Man, the master of Skillful Understanding
Teaching and taming, surpassing all
Unsurpassed and lovely, creating radiance
Without seeking, without pride, without attached craving
I bow my head to the one without madness, the pure one
Already apart from darkness, with nothing defiled
Among sentient beings he is the supreme
And straightway attains the great renown of skillful stillness
I bow my head to the one without attachment, without bonds
Delusion and clinging long ago departed
Without self, grasping at marks, the view of self removed
The beginning, middle, and end all good, the Dharma proclaimed
Good in letter, good in meaning, all complete
Toward suffering sentient beings, never weary
By the Buddha's skillful means he therefore rests
Sentient beings of no realm must be made to depart far
The Buddha by skillful means makes them depart far
The Tathāgata does not abide in the dharma of cessation
Ever practicing rescue and deliverance, gathering the world
And again in that vast and great Dharma-gate
I bow my head to the great wisdom that broadly gathers all
Halting the false discriminations
Skillfully departing from all seeking of the immortals' path
Casting off all evil dharmas, manifesting as the worthy man
Departing from the seven kinds of defilement, accomplishing the holy life
Like space, in no place can it be defiled
Pure, ever relying upon the holy life
Only removing defiling dharmas, understanding the nature of emptiness
Departing from words and speech, his mind unattached
The Buddha ever abides in the nature of mindfulness of the body
The Buddha's mind has passed beyond the two extremes
Right wisdom deep and profound, the master of valiant strength
Within the gate of Auspiciousness, the one of fine body
I bow my head to the great compassion, inconceivable
In all his deeds, self-penetrating power
That feeble one he is able to aid in cultivation
Those who are good and fair he all accords with
The Buddha is the body of Vajra, firm and solid
Born from the truth
Abiding in all places as is fitting
Attaining Great Nirvāṇa, the place of utmost bliss
The Tathāgata has attained the great benefit
Relinquishing his solitary bliss yet undefiled
Leading the world into the place of peace and security
Broadly, for sentient beings' sake, expounding the right path
I take refuge in the master of great awakening
Manifesting realization of the path of right enlightenment
Those who do not cultivate the holy life
The Buddha skillfully establishes them
The Buddha is the master of the path of wisdom
The path of consciousness, the master who expounds the path
The Buddha is the master of the right path
To which all roads converge
The Buddha is born from the place of brightness
And again born from wisdom
Born of meaning and born of Dharma
Skillfully expounding the ultimate meaning
When all meanings come forth
Among men, the great Lion
Among men, the master like the dragon and elephant
Among men, the great Sage
Among men, the master of right knowledge
Among men, the master of Wise Valor
Among men, surpassing and hard to match
Among men, truly the highest
Among men, the master excellent and wondrous
Among men, the white lotus
Without alarm and without fear
Without anxiety and without dread
The Buddha is the one apart from anxiety
Without fear and again without contention
Terror and dire peril, none
Severing and ceasing those fears so hard
Himself departing from the realm of fear
And again making others depart as well
Himself severing and ceasing fear
And again making others also attain the path
Himself crossing the sea of suffering's strait
And again making others also cross
Departing from the body's destiny, rejoicing
Departing from the body's destiny, sorrow and anxiety
The Buddha, surpassing, cannot be matched
And again cannot be compared
His merit hard to praise in full
Passing beyond the place of praise
And again his form cannot be grasped
And again it cannot all be discriminated
Surpassing all other sentient beings
Only one and not two
The Buddha is the Spontaneous Wisdom
And none can be compared with him
Broadly, for all sentient beings' sake
I bow my head to the All-Knowing One
Among gods and men in the world
Subduing Māra together with the Śramaṇas
The Buddha is the supreme
And again none surpasses him above
The Buddha, precious and rare
And yet truly hard to attain
To meet a Buddha, rarely arising in the world
Truly rare and hard to encounter
He is truly the master of the holy eye
And again, for the sake of the great light
The great good and shining brightness
The great lamp of great radiance
Not dark, blazing with great light
And again attaining the supreme Dharma
The faculties, powers, and limbs of the path complete
Not shared with the Śrāvakas
If not for the sake of benefit
The Tathāgata would not be born
Without benefit he does not appear
Without benefit he again does not rest
The Buddha, for the sake of all the multitude of beings
For their benefit therefore appears
With compassion for the world
Performing all beneficial deeds
Amid gods and men
The Buddha is the master of right view
Using the right path and discipline-Dharma
To teach them all
And again amid that assembly
The Buddha, the place of reverence and love
Or giving rise to a mind of reverence and love
Creating contemplation of veneration
The Buddha is the place of intimacy
And accordingly with respect
Bowing in reverence, seeing the True Suchness
The auspicious, supreme jewel
The Buddha's eye of wisdom shines and illumines
And again is born from the eye of wisdom
Kindling the lamp of wisdom
Guarding the brightness of that great wisdom
Lighting the lamp of wisdom that shines and illumines
The great wisdom destroying the place of darkness
The self-mastery of all natures
The Tathāgata illumines them all clearly
The Tathāgata's faculty of wisdom is excellent
Subtle, wondrous, and again supreme
The Tathāgata's power of great wisdom
Cannot be subdued
Storing the inexhaustible treasure of wisdom
Filled with the priceless jewel of wisdom
Bearing the keen blade of beneficial wisdom
Grasping the staff of wisdom
And again hurling forth the sword of wisdom
His wisdom neither falling nor diminishing
Skillful wisdom opening right wisdom
Clearly knowing all dharmas
His wisdom vast, like a palace
Right wisdom, the place where he abides
Firm wisdom is the wall
Its circuit all sealed and guarded
Inconceivable right wisdom
For advancing onward in succession
Unable to be subdued, surpassing all
With no other mind, abiding
Not subdued by others
And again with no place of grasping
Yet within those three realms
He is the one worthy to be offered to
Manifestly observing all
In all things with nothing clung to
What should be understood, he understands
What should be departed from, he departs from
What should be attained, straightway attained
The good deeds to be done, already done
This matter brought to fullness
For the sake of teaching the world
The Buddha is the Great Holy One
His vigor never before existing
Already established in purity
Rare and vast, the great deed
Manifestly realizing the supreme path
The rare Dharma hard to conceive
Straightway attaining the supreme place
Drinking the sweet water of Nirvāṇa
Plucking out the root of the net of craving
Cutting off all the roots of error
Skillfully acting, without difference
The undefiled Dharma he can adhere to
Skillful in arising and skillful in essence
Excellently going forth into homelessness
His roots of goodness again attaining utterly
I bow my head to the one who has arrived
Unmoving, inconceivable
The wise one among the wise
Flattery, crookedness, and error and defilement removed
And again crossing the sea of afflictions
Conjoined with the practice of liberation
Liberating from all the bonds
And again attaining a mind without grasping
And again exhausting all outflows
And again exhausting all errors
And again expelling all poisons
And again severing all hindrances
Utterly burning the nets of views
These are the words of falsehood
And the false views of seeing and hearing
False mindfulness and false action
The Buddha departs from all of them
The aggregates, the bases, the elements, and all dharmas
Whether broadly or briefly, he skillfully expounds
Relying upon purity, unbound
In all places of reliance
Those not yet rescued, he rescues again
Those not yet returned, he makes return
Those with no place to go, he gives a direction
The Buddha for their sake creates a direction
Having crossed the sea of birth-and-death
Pervasively entering all realms
The places fitting for manifestation and transformation
To all of them he should come
Those who fall into evil realms
The Buddha ever understands, ever considers
And straightway takes the skillful means
To universally deliver the multitude of beings
Without greed and without anger
Without delusion, his roots of goodness complete
His great body ever abiding in the body
Compassionate and beneficial
His body clothed in Śākya's robe
Broadly performing good and wholesome deeds
Rare is his power of vigor
Of great wisdom, the master who understands rightly
Morality, patience, and the dharma of truth
His inner mind ever pure
Vast and great and deep and far
Complete in all merits
His radiance shining clearly
Taming the mind, pure and clear
A well of water deep and truly clear
The wholesome seed manifesting in full
The world's pure eye
The fair blue Utpala flower
Vast and great and beautiful
Pervading throughout the ten directions
Silent, his nature bright and fair
The fair moon of all wisdom
The Buddha's virtue vast and measureless
Therefore do I offer praise.
Praise of the Auspicious Virtue of the Buddha
