12. Chapter Twelve: Freedom from Sorrow

At that time, the Buddha asked Maitreya Bodhisattva, “Ajita! What is the true mind of a bodhisattva? The mind of a bodhisattva cannot be fathomed or explicitly revealed. I now wish to illustrate this mind by means of an analogy.

“Ajita, immeasurable and boundless kalpas ago, there was then a Buddha named King of Peace Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened One, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Men, Teacher of Devas and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One. Buddha King of Peace had a lifespan of eighty-four thousand years. He held three great assemblies.

At the first Dharma assembly, seven billion people attained the fruit of arhatship (1); at the second great assembly, nine billion people attained the fruit of arhatship; and at the third great assembly, more than ten billion people attained the fruit of arhatship. Their outflows (2) had been exhausted, their task had been accomplished, they had laid down their heavy burdens and attained their own benefit, utterly severed all bonds, and attained liberation through right wisdom.

At that time, there was a consecrated great king named King Lion Virtue, whose queen gave birth simultaneously to two crown princes. The first was named Freedom from Sorrow, and the second was named Separation from Sorrow. While the two princes were playing together in the palace, they suddenly saw a great assembly surrounding Buddha King of Peace as he entered the city of Joyful Vision.

At that moment, Crown Prince Freedom from Sorrow said to Separation from Sorrow, ‘Younger brother, do you see Buddha King of Peace approaching from afar?’ Separation from Sorrow replied that he did. Freedom from Sorrow then said, ‘We too can become like Buddha King of Peace,’ and spoke this verse for Separation from Sorrow:

Separation from Sorrow, contemplate

the Blessed One, King of Peace.

Surrounded by a reverent assembly,

he comes peacefully from afar.

I give rise to a mind of faith and aspiration,

wishing to seek the unsurpassed path;

to deliver from birth, aging, sickness, and death

all beings in the ocean of suffering.

Through greed, anger, delusion, and pride,

they create so many evil karmas.

Having created evil karma,

they revolve through the evil destinies.

I must seek the Buddha-path

and universally deliver all beings.

Separation from Sorrow, you too should thus

resolve upon unsurpassed bodhi,

for Buddhas are difficult to encounter,

like the udumbara flower...

“At that time, Separation from Sorrow replied in verse:

Mere words cannot bring attainment;

worldly people speak but do not act.

I will not rely upon verbal declarations.

Through the mind, the path will surely be attained.

People in the world who wish to become Buddhas

merely speak with their lips;

such words are all false and empty,

and bear no genuine fruit.

If the Buddha-path could be realized

merely through verbal declarations,

then all who are eloquent speakers

would already have become Buddhas.

“At that time, Freedom from Sorrow responded with another verse:

If you do not resolve your mind,

it is entirely because of covetous attachment,

fearing that others may ask things of you;

yet when resolving the mind, words are unnecessary.

A great person (3), for the sake of beings,

gives both wealth and Dharma (4),

without cherishing or begrudging anything,

wishing to attain Buddhahood.

One who does not form such a resolve

is called an indolent person (5),

fearing that he cannot practice as he speaks—

this is truly shameful.

You doubt that the unsurpassed path

is exceedingly difficult to realize.

Having long ago formed such a resolve,

you therefore dare not voice it.

“At that time, Separation from Sorrow said, ‘Let us go together to visit King of Peace Tathagata. As for the resolves we have formed, only by going to ask the Buddha can it be known whose is genuine.’ As soon as he had finished speaking, Separation from Sorrow descended the stairs. Wishing to make an offering to the Buddha, he took a string of precious jewels and a superior brocade robe worth one hundred million and approached the Buddha.

At that same moment, Freedom from Sorrow leaped down from the palace. His body was entirely unharmed, and he calmly rose and approached the Buddha. He removed the precious robe from his body, took off his string of precious jewels, and presented them to Buddha King of Peace.

Out of compassion, the Buddha accepted the string of precious jewels. Separation from Sorrow then came from behind to where the Buddha was. Seeing Freedom from Sorrow standing beside the Buddha, he asked, ‘Elder brother, by what path did you come here?’ Freedom from Sorrow replied, ‘I leaped down from the palace.

My body was not injured, and so I stand here before the Buddha.’ Separation from Sorrow then presented the priceless precious robe and mani jewel to Buddha King of Peace and spoke this verse:

I have been able to behold the Blessed One,

who comes by no path whatsoever.

I must now cultivate the right path,

which all Buddhas praise.

“At that time, Freedom from Sorrow again spoke this verse:

One who cherishes his body and life

and seeks the path as you do

places his own benefit

above the benefit of beings.

I do not cherish my body or life.

I vow to endure every suffering

for the welfare and happiness of sentient beings,

delivering them beyond suffering and affliction.

To see the Buddha is to see the path;

one should seek nothing else.

When ordinary beings practice what they deem the right path,

they actually fall onto a deviant path.

Because beings follow deviant paths,

they perceive right and wrong;

bound by craving and attachment,

they remain far from the right path.

I vow always to encounter Buddhas

and aspire to leave the household life;

to cultivate the pure brahmacarya continually

and deliver multitudes of beings life after life;

to abide always in wholesome Dharma

and single-mindedly cultivate the Buddha-Dharma.

By devotedly upholding the teachings,

I shall bring welfare and happiness to beings;

resolving my mind, I shall perfect diligence,

hear the Dharma and understand its meaning,

abide securely in meditative concentration,

and attain merits towering high...

“Ajita! After the two princes had spoken these verses, they left the household life and practiced under Buddha King of Peace. Each declared, ‘I wish to be the first to become a Buddha.’ At that time, Bhikshu Freedom from Sorrow asked Separation from Sorrow, ‘By what practice do you wish to be the first to become a Buddha?’ Separation from Sorrow replied, ‘I have formed the resolve that, because each and every being does not know how to transform the mind, they undergo suffering in the hells for tens of billions of kalpas.

Until I attain unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment, I shall continue to uphold such a steadfast and magnificently adorned mind—the mind capable of patient endurance, gentleness, and harmony. Suppose someone were to approach from the east carrying a vessel of filthy, burning excrement and fasten it upon my head. Even then, I would not give rise to a single thought of anger, glare at him, or revile him.

Instead, I would think: “I am now practicing patience. Because I seek the Buddha-Dharma in order to bring forth the Buddha’s wisdom, I wish to enable that person to attain liberation. If I too became angry, how would I differ from him?

I am a practitioner, whereas he does not practice; I should not initiate the karma of one who does not practice. I should initiate the karma of a practitioner. Therefore, I must extinguish my own anger and also extinguish the angry minds of countless other beings by teaching them the Dharma.

For the sake of unsurpassed bodhi, I must cultivate patience in this way.”’

“At that time, Freedom from Sorrow asked Separation from Sorrow, ‘Do you perceive the mind upon which you form your resolve and adorn that resolve?’ Separation from Sorrow replied, ‘If there were no mind, it could not be adorned. If there were no adornment, how could there be a bodhisattva cultivating the path? Therefore, you should know that it is through this mind that a bodhisattva cultivates the path in order to transcend the world.’

“Elder Dharma brother Sorrowless, words are utterly beyond conceptual thought. One should not suppose that it is because such a mind exists that adornment can be accomplished. Why is this?

Because mind is originally unreal, arising and ceasing thought after thought. Because it is unreal and arises and ceases thought after thought, all dharmas are without characteristics, yet they are also not without characteristics. Free from Sorrow, both existence and nonexistence are called views; all such views are wrong views.

Since wrong views constitute a wrong path, they cannot be called bodhi. Those who hold them are far removed from the path of bodhi and cannot hope to attain it. Therefore, one should know that both the existence and nonexistence of dharmas are mere conceptual proliferation (6), which bodhisattvas should neither approach nor cultivate.

What dharma, then, should bodhisattvas approach and cultivate? There is no dharma whatsoever that bodhisattvas should approach and cultivate. Why is this?

If there were a dharma to be cultivated, it would already be contrary to Dharma. Therefore, bodhisattvas should not become attached to any dharma. Why?

Because the path of unsurpassed bodhi does not cling to dharmas. If a bodhisattva understands it in this way, even that understanding is contrary to Dharma. Why is this?

Because there is no characteristic that can be understood and called a bodhisattva. Furthermore, if a bodhisattva knows in this way and contemplates in this way, that too falls into what is contrary to Dharma. Why is this?

There is no characteristic of liberation that can be called bodhi. If a bodhisattva cultivates in this way, thinking, ‘Among these dharmas, I must realize it in this manner,’ he immediately falls into what is contrary to Dharma. Why?

Because bodhi is called that which is without ignorance and without discourse.”

At that time Free from Sorrow said to Sorrowless, “If bodhi exists, elder Dharma brother, you should say that it exists; if it does not exist, you should say that it does not exist. Why do you say that, with regard to unsurpassed bodhi, there is nothing whatsoever that can be spoken?”

Sorrowless replied, “You should clearly understand that bodhi is a dharma beyond conceptual proliferation. You should not engage in empty debate about whether it exists or does not exist. Why is this? Because all dharmas of conceptual proliferation are not bodhi.”

Free from Sorrow then said, “Good spiritual friend! When I speak with you, you do not understand the meaning. Since all conceptual proliferation is not bodhi, the dharma free from conceptual proliferation is itself bodhi.”

Sorrowless replied, “You understand well. We should go together and ask the Buddha to resolve this doubt.”

The two bhiksus then went in person to the Buddha. Having bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet, they sat to one side. Bhiksu Free from Sorrow first presented their discussion and questioned the Buddha.

The Buddha King of Peace then turned to Sorrowless and said, “Excellent, excellent!” He immediately confirmed his understanding (7) and told Free from Sorrow, “It is as Sorrowless has said: because there is conceptual proliferation, it is not bodhi; the dharma free from conceptual proliferation is bodhi. Why is this? Because only freedom from all conceptual proliferation is called bodhi.

What is meant by freedom? Freedom means separation from all things, wherein every conceptual proliferation is utterly quiescent. What is conceptual proliferation?

It is discourse concerning form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness; discourse concerning the aggregate of precepts, concentration, wisdom, few desires, contentment, ascetic practices, dhutanga practices, being easy to satisfy and easy to support, and dwelling in secluded, tranquil places (8)—all these are dharmas of conceptual proliferation. From where do these dharmas of conceptual proliferation arise?

They all arise from ideation and discrimination. What is discrimination? It is discriminating form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness; discriminating precepts, concentration, wisdom, few desires, contentment, merit, and so forth.

If form is discriminated, it is not form. Within that discrimination there is no aggregate of precepts, concentration, wisdom, few desires, contentment, dhutanga practices, and so forth. Within that discrimination there is also no emptiness of form.

Likewise, when feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are discriminated, they are not consciousness. Within that discrimination there are no precepts, concentration, wisdom, few desires, contentment, dhutanga practices, and so forth. Within that discrimination there is also no emptiness of consciousness.

It should be known that wisdom is likewise nonexistent. Within that emptiness there are no characteristics of either oneness or difference; therefore, it is called bodhi.”

Upon hearing this Dharma, Free from Sorrow attained the patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas. He also came to know the mind of bodhi, and because of that mind he was called a bodhisattva. At that time, the two bodhisattvas contemplated the Dharma in this manner and immediately gained faithful understanding and accorded with it.

For more than eighty thousand years they constantly cultivated with diligent vigor, continuously practicing walking meditation without ever resting. Throughout those eighty thousand years, no thought of sensual desire, anger, or delusion arose in them. When those two bodhisattvas reached the end of their lives, they were immediately born in the thousandth world below, in the presence of the Buddha Wondrous Steadfastness, and both entered the monastic life.

Knowing for themselves how diligently they had practiced in their previous lives, they passed successively from one Buddha to another and encountered six hundred and eight thousand myriad kotis of Buddhas, Blessed Ones. Within the Buddha-Dharma, they always entered the monastic life and diligently cultivated as before. Later, Sorrowless first attained Buddhahood with the name Adornment of the Supreme Assembly.

Bodhisattva Free from Sorrow subsequently attained Buddhahood in that Buddha-land with the name Sun of the Supreme Assembly.

The Buddha told Maitreya, “These two princes both propagated the Buddha-Dharma deeply and extensively, and their lives endured for asamkhyeya kalpas. Ajita, this is what is called the mind of a great bodhisattva. The bodhisattva’s mind neither comes nor goes, neither clings nor arises, neither ceases nor abides, and neither moves nor wavers. If any sentient being gives rise to such a mind, that is exceedingly rare.”

At that time, wishing to clarify the meaning above, the Blessed One spoke these verses:

A Buddha’s appearance in the world

is difficult to encounter in myriad kotis of kalpas,

like the udumbara flower,

which blooms but once after a very long time.

One who gives rise to the mind of bodhi

and has right faith in the Buddha’s path—

such a one is a great bodhisattva,

exceedingly difficult to encounter in the world.

Therefore, if anyone

can give rise to the mind of bodhi,

that person shall become a Buddha

named the Lion King.

Sovereign like a lion,

he shall turn the pure Dharma wheel

and attain unobstructed spiritual powers—

all because of the initial resolve.

The Buddha’s thirty-two marks,

and the eighteen exclusive qualities...

These dharmas and characteristics

all arise from the initial resolve.

The conduct of all Buddhas is never false.

Contemplate the Dharma of the Lion King

and the invisible protuberance upon his crown:

all arise from the initial resolve.

Giving, patience, observance of precepts,

diligent vigor, meditation, and wisdom—

these paramita dharmas (9)

all arise from the initial resolve.

All the merits described above

and the many other Buddha-dharmas—

one should know that every one of them

arises from the initial resolve.

The precepts, concentration, and wisdom of sravakas,

and each of their spiritual powers—

all such dharmas

also arise from the initial resolve.

Had I not given rise

to the mind of unsurpassed bodhi,

I would not now have attained

the ultimate wisdom of a Buddha.

Without first realizing it oneself,

it is difficult to enable sentient beings to hear it;

and sravaka disciples

could hardly transcend the world.

Through the causes and conditions of profound practice,

pratyekabuddhas attain realization,

become fields of merit for the world,

and enter nirvana without remainder (10).

These immeasurable merits

also arise from the initial resolve.

Whether worldly or transcendent,

all forms of happiness—

one should know that all these things

arise from the mind of bodhi.

You should contemplate this mind:

all the fruits it brings

cannot be measured over many kalpas

or ever fully calculated and recounted.

You should contemplate this mind:

it constantly arises and ceases thought after thought;

though illusory and possessing nothing,

it brings forth great fruits.

This mind arises through conditions

and has no single fixed characteristic.

Though such a mind is indeterminate,

it attains great fruits.

That mind is not produced by conditions,

yet neither is it apart from conditions;

it neither exists nor does not exist,

yet it brings forth fruits.

The wise who know this mind

should give rise to the wisdom of a Buddha.

Who would not honor and cherish it,

except those who cling with craving?

Those who rely upon form

and follow feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness...

Seeing dual characteristics within dharmas,

they are bound by falsehood,

like a person in empty space

who declares that he is bound.

Such a person binds himself tightly

and remains forever caught in karmic fruits.

Knowing that the nature of mind is thus—

false and possessing nothing—

one should not conceive views and give rise to doubt,

for mind has no fixed characteristic.

Mind arises through causes and conditions;

all is empty and without self-nature.

Whoever knows this in such a way

will not retreat from the mind of bodhi.

Because the nature of dharmas is originally empty,

this is the Dharma of non-arising.

The non-arising of all dharmas

is true seed-wisdom.

Whoever knows this in such a way,

I give a prediction of bodhi.

Neither grasping the skandhas nor apart from the skandhas (11)

All shall receive predictions,

for if one knows the signless Dharma,

one likewise does not cling to wisdom.

One who knows rightly in this way

is said to have truly brought forth the aspiration.

Having attained this steadfast mind,

that person is always able to endure

harsh words, abuse, and revilement;

blades, staves, and every suffering...

If one can endure in this way,

one's mind is free from greed and anger;

upon gaining benefits, one does not grow arrogant,

nor does one envy those who receive them,

but single-mindedly cultivates the practice of patience,

extinguishing the two extremes of “existence” and “nonexistence.”

That person, while dwelling in the world,

practices indestructible wisdom.

Therefore, one should cultivate the Dharma of

emptiness, absence of intrinsic nature, and patient endurance.

I cultivated this Dharma,

and thus attained the fruit of bodhi.

13. Chapter Thirteen: The Intermediate Teaching

At that time, in the eastern direction, sixty-eight thousand worlds away, there was a world called Supreme Intention. In that world was a Buddha named Empty Nature, who was then bestowing upon the Great Bodhisattva Great Moon a prediction of unsurpassed bodhi. At that time, the Moon Bodhisattva saw a brilliant radiance and heard a clear sound. He then asked the Buddha Empty Nature, “Whose Buddha-radiance and sound are these?” The Buddha replied, “In the western direction, more than sixty-eight thousand worlds from here, there is a world called Saha. There the Buddha Shakyamuni is now expounding a Mahayana sutra. This is the radiance and sound of the Buddha Shakyamuni.”

At that time, the Moon Bodhisattva addressed the Buddha Empty Nature, saying, “World-Honored One, I wish to go in person to the Saha world to behold the Buddha Shakyamuni, pay homage to him and make offerings, and also to meet the assembly of great bodhisattvas in that world, who are fully adorned with virtues.” The Buddha said, “If you wish to go there, you may do as you please.” The Moon Bodhisattva then rose from his seat, bowed at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him, and departed.

At that time, the Buddha Empty Nature took a branch bearing a white lotus and gave it to the Moon Bodhisattva, saying, “Take this flower and present it to the Buddha Shakyamuni. On my behalf, inquire whether he has little affliction and little illness, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether his health is vigorous.” Then the Moon Bodhisattva, as swiftly as a mighty man might extend his arm, vanished from that place and appeared in the Saha world, in the city of Rajagriha, at the Bamboo Grove.

He bowed at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and addressed the Buddha, saying, “The Tathagata Empty Nature asks whether the World-Honored One has little illness and little affliction, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether his travels are peaceful and secure. He has sent this flower as a gift to the World-Honored One.” The Buddha accepted the flower and then asked the Moon Bodhisattva, “Good man, does the Buddha Empty Nature have little illness and little affliction, and is his health peaceful and sound?” The Moon Bodhisattva replied, “World-Honored One, the Tathagata Empty Nature remains peaceful and joyful, and nothing troubles him.”

In the eastern direction, more than innumerable worlds numbering one thousand and forty thousand away, there was a world called Wondrous Dharani. In that world was a Buddha named King of the Power of Renown, who was then bestowing upon the Great Bodhisattva Wisdom Dissemination a prediction of unsurpassed bodhi. At that time, the bodhisattva saw a brilliant radiance and heard a clear sound.

He then asked the Buddha King of the Power of Renown, “World-Honored One, who has produced this wondrous radiance and sound?” The Buddha replied, “In the western direction, more than innumerable worlds numbering one thousand and forty thousand from here, there is a world called Saha. There the Buddha Shakyamuni is now expounding the Dharma for the bodhisattvas, severing the doubts of sentient beings and causing them to rejoice in the Mahayana treasury of sutras.

This is the radiance and sound of the Buddha Shakyamuni.” At that time, the Bodhisattva Wisdom Dissemination addressed the Buddha, saying, “World-Honored One, I wish to go in person to the Saha world to behold the Buddha Shakyamuni, pay homage to him and make offerings, and also to meet the great bodhisattvas there, who are fully adorned with virtues.” The Buddha replied, “If you wish to go there, you may do as you please.” Having heard these words, the Bodhisattva Wisdom Dissemination bowed at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him, and departed.

The Buddha King of the Power of Renown then took a small quantity of red sandalwood powder, gave it to him, and said, “Take this incense and present it to the Buddha Shakyamuni. On my behalf, inquire whether he has little affliction and little illness, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether his health is peaceful and sound.” Then the Bodhisattva Wisdom Dissemination, as swiftly as a mighty man might extend his arm, suddenly vanished and appeared in the Saha world.

He went to the city of Rajagriha, entered the Bamboo Grove, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and stood to one side. He then addressed the Buddha, saying, “World-Honored One, the Buddha King of the Power of Renown asks whether the World-Honored One has little illness and little affliction, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether his travels are peaceful and secure. He has sent this powdered incense as a gift to the World-Honored One.” After accepting the incense, the Buddha asked, “Does the Buddha King of the Power of Renown have little illness and little affliction, and is his health peaceful and sound?” The bodhisattva replied, “The World-Honored One Renown remains peaceful and joyful in that world, and nothing troubles him.”

In the east, more than thirty-nine thousand worlds away, there is a world called Nguyệt Xuất Quang, where a Buddha named Phóng Quang is presently bestowing upon Bodhisattva Minh Luân and the great bodhisattvas a prediction of unsurpassed bodhi. At that time, Bodhisattva Minh Luân saw a brilliant radiance and heard joyful sounds. He then asked Buddha Phóng Quang, “World-Honored One, what are this radiance and these sounds?” The Buddha replied, “In the west, more than thirty-nine thousand countless worlds away, there is a world called Sahā, where a Buddha named Śākyamuni is presently teaching the Dharma to the bodhisattvas, dispelling the doubts of sentient beings and causing them to rejoice in the treasury of Mahāyāna sutras.

This is the radiance and these are the sounds of Buddha Śākyamuni.” At that time, Bodhisattva Minh Luân addressed the Buddha, saying, “World-Honored One, I wish to go in person to the Sahā world to behold Buddha Śākyamuni, pay homage to him, and make offerings, and also to meet the assembly of great bodhisattvas there, fully endowed with adornments.” The Buddha replied, “If you wish to go, you may do as you please.” Having heard and accepted these words, Bodhisattva Minh Luân bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him, and departed.

Buddha Phóng Quang took a large lotus flower and gave it to Minh Luân, saying, “Take this flower and present it to Buddha Śākyamuni. Convey my greetings to him and ask whether he has little illness and little affliction, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether he is vigorous and well in his activities.” At that time, Bodhisattva Minh Luân, like a mighty man extending his arm, suddenly vanished and appeared in the Sahā world.

He reached the city of Rājagṛha, proceeded directly to the Bamboo Grove, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and then stood to one side and addressed the Buddha, saying, “World-Honored One, Tathagata Phóng Quang sends his greetings and asks whether the World-Honored One has little illness and little affliction and whether his health is peaceful and sound. He has sent this flower as a gift to the World-Honored One.” After accepting the flower, the Buddha asked, “Is Tathagata Phóng Quang vigorous and well in his activities?” Minh Luân replied, “World-Honored One Phóng Quang remains peaceful and happy, and all is well.” In the east, approximately thirty-eight thousand asaṃkhya worlds away, there is a world called Ca Sa Tướng,

where a Buddha named Ly Cấu is presently bestowing upon the Great Bodhisattva Vô Biên Bảo Nghiêm a prediction of unsurpassed bodhi.

At that time, Bodhisattva Vô Biên Bảo Nghiêm saw a brilliant radiance and heard joyful sounds. He then asked Buddha Ly Cấu, “What are this radiance and these sounds?” The Buddha replied, “In the west, more than thirty-eight thousand asaṃkhya worlds away, there is a world called Sahā, where a Buddha named Śākyamuni is presently teaching the Dharma to the bodhisattvas, dispelling the doubts of sentient beings and causing them to rejoice in the treasury of Mahāyāna sutras.

This is the radiance and these are the sounds of Buddha Śākyamuni.” At that time, Bodhisattva Vô Biên Bảo Nghiêm addressed Buddha Ly Cấu, saying, “World-Honored One, I wish to go in person to the Sahā world to behold Buddha Śākyamuni, pay homage to him, and make offerings, and I also wish to meet the great bodhisattvas there, fully endowed with adornments.” The Buddha replied, “If you wish to go, you may do as you please.” The Buddha then took a kāṣāya and gave it to the bodhisattva, saying, “Take this robe and present it to Buddha Śākyamuni.

Convey my greetings to him and ask whether he has little illness and little affliction, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether he is peaceful and well in his activities.” At that time, the bodhisattva, like a mighty man extending both arms, immediately vanished and arrived in the Sahā world. He entered the city of Rājagṛha, proceeded directly to the Bamboo Grove, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and then stood to one side and addressed the Buddha, saying, “Tathagata Ly Cấu sends his greetings and asks whether the World-Honored One has little illness and little affliction and whether his health is peaceful and sound.

He has sent this kāṣāya as a gift to the World-Honored One.” After accepting the robe, the Buddha asked, “Is Tathagata Ly Cấu in that world peaceful and well in his activities?” The bodhisattva replied, “World-Honored One Ly Cấu remains peaceful and happy in that world, and all is well.

“In the east, more than thirty-seven thousand asaṃkhya worlds away, there is a world called Liên Hoa, where a Buddha named Tạp Hoa Sanh Đức is presently bestowing upon the Great Bodhisattva Vô Lượng Tinh Tấn a prediction of unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment. At that time, Bodhisattva Vô Lượng Tinh Tấn saw a brilliant radiance and heard joyful sounds. He then asked Buddha Tạp Hoa Sanh Đức, “What are this radiance and these sounds?” The Buddha replied, “In the west, more than thirty-seven thousand worlds away, there is a world called Sahā, where a Buddha named Śākyamuni is presently teaching the Dharma to the bodhisattvas, dispelling the doubts of sentient beings and causing them to rejoice in the treasury of Mahāyāna sutras.

This is the radiance and these are the sounds of Buddha Śākyamuni.” At that time, Bodhisattva Vô Lượng Tinh Tấn addressed Buddha Tạp Hoa Sanh Đức, saying, “I wish to go in person to the Sahā world to behold Buddha Śākyamuni, pay homage to him, and make offerings, and also to meet the assembly of great bodhisattvas there, fully endowed with adornments.” The Buddha replied, “If you wish to go, you may do as you please.” The Buddha then took a large lotus flower, handed it to him, and said, “Take this flower and present it to Buddha Śākyamuni.

Convey my greetings to him and ask whether he has little illness and little affliction, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether he is peaceful and well in his activities.” At that time, the bodhisattva, like a mighty man extending both arms, suddenly vanished and appeared in the Sahā world. He reached the city of Rājagṛha, entered the Bamboo Grove, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and then stood to one side and addressed the Buddha, saying, “Buddha Tạp Hoa Sanh Đức sends his greetings and asks whether the World-Honored One has little illness and little affliction and whether his health is peaceful and sound.

He has sent this flower as a gift to the World-Honored One.” After accepting the flower, the Buddha asked, “Is Tathagata Tạp Hoa Sanh Đức peaceful and well in his activities there?” The bodhisattva replied, “World-Honored One Tạp Hoa remains peaceful and well, and all is well.

“In the east, approximately thirty-seven thousand worlds away, there is a world called Nhất Cái, where a Buddha named Ly Bố Úy is presently bestowing upon the Great Bodhisattva Võng Minh a prediction of bodhi. At that time, Bodhisattva Võng Minh saw a brilliant radiance and heard joyful sounds. He then asked Buddha Ly Bố Úy, “World-Honored One, what are this radiance manifested by the Buddha and these sounds?” The Buddha replied, “In the west, more than thirty-seven thousand worlds away, there is a world called Sahā, where a Buddha named Śākyamuni is presently teaching the Dharma to the bodhisattvas, dispelling the doubts of sentient beings and causing them to rejoice in the treasury of Mahāyāna sutras.

This is the radiance and these are the sounds of Buddha Śākyamuni.” At that time, Bodhisattva Võng Minh said, “I wish to go in person to the Sahā world to behold Buddha Śākyamuni, pay homage to him, and make offerings, and also to meet the assembly of great bodhisattvas there, fully endowed with adornments.” The Buddha replied, “If you wish to go, you may do as you please.” The Buddha then took one hundred kinds of five-colored flowers, gave them to Võng Minh, and said, “Take these flowers and present them to Buddha Śākyamuni.

Convey my greetings to him and ask whether he has little illness and little affliction, whether his dwelling is comfortable, and whether he is peaceful and well in his activities.” At that time, Võng Minh, like a mighty man extending both arms, suddenly vanished and arrived in the Sahā world. He reached the city of Rājagṛha, entered the Bamboo Grove, bowed before the Buddha, and then stood to one side and addressed the Buddha, saying, “Buddha Ly Bố Úy sends his greetings and asks whether the World-Honored One has little illness and little affliction and whether his health is peaceful and sound.

He has sent these flowers as a gift to the World-Honored One.” After accepting the flowers, the Buddha asked Võng Minh, “Is Tathagata Ly Bố Úy peaceful and well in his activities?” Võng Minh replied, “World-Honored One Ly Bố Úy remains peaceful and happy there, and all is well.”

In the eastern direction, some thirty-six thousand worlds away, there is a world named Supreme Purity, where a Buddha named Wisdom Assembly is presently bestowing the prediction of bodhi upon the great bodhisattva Wisdom Power. At that time, the bodhisattva Wisdom Power saw a brilliant light and heard a clear sound. Each flower and leaf emitted a thousand kinds of light that illuminated the ten directions. Between them were level pathways, with jeweled cords strung along their sides to mark their boundaries.

Along all these narrow paths stood jeweled trees. Those trees rose to a height of seven thousand yojanas, and their luxuriant branches and leaves could spread over an area of eighty-four thousand yojanas. Each tree bore eighty kotis of mani jewels as fruit.

Trees such as these were innumerable, and the lotus flowers brilliantly illuminated that entire world. The Buddha Shakyamuni enveloped it with his radiance, causing no one to be able to see it. (1) Arhat: Translated into Chinese as “non-returner” or “unborn,” meaning one who will no longer be reborn in the human realm but has attained liberation and awakening. It is the highest of the four noble fruits in the Lesser Vehicle. Compared with the stages of the Great Vehicle, it is equivalent to that of a bodhisattva; however, arhats do not make vows to liberate sentient beings as bodhisattvas do. Considering their aspirations fulfilled, they do not wish to continue advancing in cultivation but stop at that stage.

(2) The outflows: Afflictions and habitual tendencies—deep-seated habits difficult to eliminate—that remain or linger and have not yet been entirely removed; hence they are called “outflows.”

(3) Great being: An awakened one—a Buddha or bodhisattva. The term is used for those fully endowed with gentleness and patience: they do not become arrogant upon success or discouraged upon failure; their minds remain ever sovereign, peaceful, and joyful, without conceit or pride.

(4) The giving of material wealth and the giving of Dharma: Bestowing material goods and the teachings upon others. Material wealth takes two forms: inner wealth, such as parts of one’s own body, which a practitioner of the bodhisattva path is prepared to give without regret; and outer wealth, such as possessions and material goods acquired through one’s labor, sweat, and tears. The giving of Dharma means imparting the teachings so that everyone may understand and cultivate the path of liberation.

(5) Indolence: Laziness, fatigue, and listlessness; the practice that counteracts this mental ailment is diligence.

(6) Speculative discourse concerning dharmas (see Note 34 in Volume I).

(7) Confirmation: The transmission of the principle of the Way through mutual understanding between the minds of two people.

(8) Secluded, tranquil places: quiet and peaceful places where no one comes or goes, such as remote and isolated mountains and forests where no one comes to cause disturbance; therefore, practitioners prefer to choose such places for cultivation.

(9) Paramita: translated as “reaching the other shore,” namely, arriving at the other shore of liberation, in contrast to this shore of birth and death, the harbor of delusion.

(10) Nirvana without remainder: the ultimate state of nirvana in which nothing whatsoever remains; that is, karmic retribution and the fruit of suffering have been completely extinguished.

(11) Skandha: that which covers and obscures the nature of the mind through ignorance and afflictions, causing practitioners to lack clarity and thus making it difficult for them to advance far along the path to awakening.

(12) Sandalwood incense: a kind of precious aromatic incense with a delicate fragrance, commonly used by Indians as an offering to the Buddha.
