At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Vajrapāṇi gazed upon the assembly of the Maṇḍala, his eyes like those of a lion, majestic in virtue and sovereign at ease. For Īśāna, Lord of the Deva and Bhūta hosts, he expounded the Dharma of the Maṇḍala of the Great Powerful Vidyārāja, saying: "Noble One! If a person enters into this Great Wrathful Maṇḍala, he will straightaway be able to accomplish all undertakings; his allotted lifespan will not be cut short by premature death; he will swiftly be freed from all evil illnesses that bind the body; he will not be born into the realm of Māra; all sentient beings who behold him will rejoice; and he will swiftly be freed from all foes and enemies.

Thereafter, all the Mantra teachings of the Dharma will be accomplished; he will also be able to accomplish all the Wrathful Ones; and he will obtain all the merits within the Abhiṣeka (Consecration) and be adorned with auspiciousness."

At that time, one should first set out this Great Wrathful Maṇḍala, recite this Sūtra ten thousand times so as to obtain a wholesome state (a good realm of vision), and obtain the approval and sanction of this Lord and Teacher of the Maṇḍala. Only afterward may one study this Mantra and Altar Method.

First, one should fast for eight days, take refuge in the Three Jewels, give rise to the Bodhicitta of Great Loving-kindness and Compassion, and then, according to the proper time, perform the Method for Accomplishing the Undertaking: closing off the gate to foes and enemies, so that the dead are restored to life. This Wrathful One possesses great majestic virtue, able to cause even the Mighty Karma Demon-King to take refuge in the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha—how much more shall all the Evil Māras, ghosts, and sprites be incapable of being unsubdued and undestroyed?!

This Great Powerful Vidyārāja: if a person upholds and maintains him, he will straightaway be able to subdue all hostile Māras, all Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Pretas, Kaṭapūtanas, Ḍākinīs, Cchāyās (shadow-spirits), Śabaras, and Kābasmāras. He will be far removed from all fears, all cangues, fetters, and chains, all premature deaths, all delusion and stupor, all illnesses, all bondage, and all poverty.

This True Dharma: if a person reads, recites, upholds, and maintains it, he will obtain all wealth and treasure without ever suffering shortage or lack.

If the heavens are stricken with drought, then for seven days and seven nights one should read and recite this Great Powerful Vidyārāja, and the heavens will straightaway pour forth great rains. If the heavens do not send down rain, then those Deva hosts will be made to be wrecked and utterly destroyed. The hosts of the Nāga Kings—of the group of Kṛṣṇa Nāgarāja, Śīghra Nāgarāja, and Ananda Nāgarāja—are made to send down great rains. And if they do not send down rain, then they too will be made to die.

Furthermore, this Sūtra is to be practiced according to the Method as before. In the four directions—at riverbanks, seashores, the four sides of ponds and marshes, and before a stūpa of relics—one employs the Great Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi. Take red sandalwood, kalavīra flowers, red lotus flowers, atimuktaka flowers, and silks, banners, and streamers all of red color. Vessels filled with fragrant water… and according to the Method, in accord with the proper time, recite diligently, and one will obtain a great accumulation of merit.

Furthermore, one may take the bark of the Hua tree, write out this Mantra of the Great Powerful Vidyārāja, and place it upon a flag fitted with feathers (a feathered banner), or wear it upon the head. Then, when entering into battle, one will not be wounded; in combat one will be victorious; bows, arrows, sabers, and spears will be as the husks of flowers; and those who behold one will rejoice and give rise to love and reverence."

At that time Māra Rāja circumambulated the Buddha three times to the right, withdrew to one side, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! Why is it called the Great Power?"

The Buddha said: "O Māra Rāja! The Tathāgata is named Great Power. The Dharma-Treasury is named Great Power. The Dharma is named Great Power. The Dharma-Eye is named Great Power. The Mahāyāna is named Great Power. Vajrapāṇi is named Great Power."

Then Māra Rāja praised Vajrapāṇi, the Lord of Secrets, saying: "Excellent! Excellent, O Lord of Secrets! From this day forward, I shall not dare to vex or trouble any practitioner of the Way again. I vow to take refuge in the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. I vow to become an Upāsaka (a male lay disciple) and ever to uphold the Pure Precepts. May the liberation of the heavens cause me to be peaceful and joyful. For the sake of the Dharma assembly, I shall protect and uphold the Great Powerful Vidyārāja together with all sentient beings."

At that time the World-Honored One said to Māra Rāja: "This Sūtra of Karmic Seeds—if a person upholds, maintains, reads, and recites it, he will straightaway be swiftly freed from every kind of suffering and affliction of the Hells, the Hungry Ghosts, the Animals, and the realm of Yama Rāja. He will constantly be born in the heavens, and for twenty thousand kalpas will constantly act as Lord of the Devas (Devādhipati).

When he descends to be born in Jambudvīpa, he will again become a Golden-Wheel King, sovereign of the four continents. And in a future age he will again attain Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi (Unsurpassed, Perfect, Complete Enlightenment). As for this Great Powerful Vidyārāja, whether one is pure or impure, eating or not eating, observing the Pure Precepts or not observing the Pure Precepts—there is no obstruction whatsoever.

Merely by upholding this Mantra one obtains whatever one seeks—how much more so if, according to the Method, one upholds the Pure Precepts: then there is nothing that will not be attained."

At that time the Venerable Subhūti, together with his own assembly, all came and sat to attend the gathering. Rising from his seat, he addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! How is it that by upholding and maintaining this Heart-Dhāraṇī of the Great Powerful Vidyārāja one obtains liberation?"

The Buddha said: "O Subhūti! You should ask Vajrapāṇi, the Lord of Secrets."

Then Subhūti straightaway addressed Vajrapāṇi, saying: "O Lord of Secrets! Why is it that by upholding and maintaining this Heart of the Great Powerful Vidyārāja… what Fruit shall one obtain?"

Vajrapāṇi said: "One obtains storehouses and treasuries filled to overflowing. Upper garments and outer robes, gold, silver, jewels and treasures, elephants, horses, oxen, sheep… all are bestowed according to one's seeking."

Subhūti asked: "Is there indeed so vast and great a fruit and recompense as this?"

Vajrapāṇi replied: "Subhūti! Thus it is! Thus it is! Even unto the exhaustion of the karmic recompense and afflictions of sentient beings. Because one abides in Merit and Virtue, one arrives at the path of Merit and Virtue of Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi."

Subhūti said: "Excellent! Excellent, O Vajrapāṇi! Using the secret characteristics, every kind of adornment, possessed of the eloquence of the Abhiṣeka of Great Wisdom-Power.

Attaining the Gift of No-Characteristics, the Great Precepts, Great Wisdom, Great Merit, Great Power, Great Majestic Virtue, and the Crown of Great Merit and Virtue. This Sūtra of the Great Powerful Vidyārāja is one to which the Buddhas of the ten directions alike come to perform the Abhiṣeka. O Vajrapāṇi!

The majestic virtue of this Sūtra is such that the Tathāgatas rub the crown of one's head and bestow the prophecy, obtaining great peace and joy. As for this Dhāraṇī: whether on a mountain slope, a cliff face, an open plain, a watery hollow, a lake, a man-made river, a pond, or a marsh… if one upholds, maintains, reads, and recites it, one will swiftly be far removed from all that is fearsome."

At that time the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi addressed him, saying: "World-Honored One! If a person upholds it and moreover expounds it for the sake of others, then his lifespan will be one hundred years, free of all untimely sufferings."

Vajrapāṇi further addressed him, saying: "World-Honored One! This True Dharma obtains such merit as this. What name should it be called? And how, moreover, should it be upheld and maintained?"

The Buddha said: "O Vajrapāṇi! This Sūtra is named 'Producing All Tathāgatas,' and it also bears the names: 'Dharma Pervading-Illumination,' 'Dharma-Eye,' 'Accomplishing the Meaning of All,' 'Dharma-Cloud of All Tathāgatas,' 'Total Retention That Exhausts All Karmic Obstructions,' 'Accomplishing All Vidyārājas,' 'Prajñā-pāramitā,' 'The Very First Dharma-Realm of All Tathāgatas,' and 'The Great Powerful Vidyārāja.'"

"O Vajrapāṇi! If a person is able to hear this True Dharma, and is able to uphold, maintain, read, recite, paint, depict, and make offerings to it, he will obtain merit equal to making offerings to all the Buddhas of the past, present, and future, and to the stūpa of relics housing the very body of the World-Honored One."

Vajrapāṇi said: "Excellent! Excellent! The Buddha has spoken of the merit, virtue, transformation, and adornment of this True Dharma—subtle, wondrous, profound, and deep. I shall uphold and maintain it."

The Buddha said: "Vajrapāṇi! If there be a good son or a virtuous woman who upholds and maintains this True Dharma, then the karmic obstructions of that person, as numerous as the trees along a riverbank, will all be swiftly destroyed and brought to an end. One should use fragrant oils, burning incense, every kind of Wondrous Flower, and every kind of banner and streamer… to make offerings, and one will straightaway obtain the Treasury of Merit and Virtue, vast, great, immeasurable, and boundless, and be far removed from all obstacles and calamities.

If one upholds, maintains, reads, recites, and expounds the Ground of this Sūtra, then that person will be ever guarded, protected, and made offerings to by the hosts of the Devas, Nāgas, Asuras, Gandharvas, and all the Devas and humans. None of the Māra Rājas will dare to act in opposition. As for this Heart of the Great Powerful Vidyārāja: if one constantly recollects and is mindful of it, one will straightaway be extolled and praised by eight thousand Bodhisattvas together with the Tathāgatas, and by the hosts of Great Divine Sages, Devas, humans, Nāga Kings, Asuras, Gandharvas…"

At that time Śākyamuni Tathāgata again said to the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi: "If a person gives rise to a mind of contempt and arrogance and becomes haughty and overbearing, he will fall into the eight Great Hells. O Vajrapāṇi! If a person upholds, maintains, reads, and recites it, expounds it for others, makes offerings, reveres, esteems, and praises it, he will straightaway obtain immeasurable, boundless Hidden Treasuries (treasures buried and concealed). If he hears but a single word or a single phrase, he will straightaway obtain the Bodhisattva Path, the ultimate and irreversible (non-retrogression)."

Then Vajrapāṇi said: "The Dharma of the Tathāgata is exceedingly subtle, wondrous, profound, and deep, hard to fathom—it cannot be calculated, cannot be conceived, cannot be discussed. Therefore all sentient beings, their own minds being deluded and confused, cannot comprehend or penetrate it."

The Buddha said: "Vajrapāṇi! This Sūtra is spoken for the sake of all sentient beings. Because there is a need to instruct all sentient beings, because it is desired to bring peace and joy to all sentient beings, because it increases the benefit for all sentient beings, and because it causes all sentient beings to obtain the Abhiṣeka. It causes sentient beings to be far removed from all poverty and want, to extinguish all karmic obstructions, and to obtain great auspiciousness. Because it causes all sentient beings to attain Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi."

Then the eight thousand Bodhisattvas, having heard these words, circumambulated the Buddha three times to the right, joined their palms in reverence, and praised, saying: "Excellent! Excellent! Śākyamuni Tathāgata has well spoken this Dharma."

Those Bodhisattvas, on account of the name of Śākyamuni Tathāgata, further said: "Thus it is! Thus it is, World-Honored One! This is a true and real teaching."

At that time the World-Honored One said to Vajrapāṇi: "O Lord of Secrets! I have spoken this Dharma-Gate of the Great Power and Majestic Virtue, which gathers in all the Māra Rājas, so that they and their retinues all come together and assemble (come to attend the gathering); all obstacles and calamities are unable to be wrought; and all that is sought is fully fulfilled, even unto Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi."

At that time the World-Honored One again spoke this Dhāraṇī. He straightaway spoke the Spell, saying:

The Buddha said to the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Vajrapāṇi: "When all the Māra Rājas together with their retinues hear this Dharma of Great Power and Majestic Virtue, then in each and every one of them the mind gives rise to terror, trembling, and panic-stricken fear. Thus, taking the power of the Majestic Virtue of this Great Powerful Wrathful Vidyārāja, one ever uses it to protect and uphold all sentient beings, to create great peace and joy, to halt all calamities and disasters, to show pity and compassion, to bring abundant benefit, to sever all evils and venoms, and to destroy the Gu-sprites (poison-spell sprites). Because one has given rise to the Bodhicitta, one expounds the Wondrous Dharma, causing the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha to abide for a long time."

At that time Mañjuśrī, the Dharma-Prince (Mañjuśrī Dharmarājaputra), rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt with his right knee to the ground, joined his palms toward the Buddha, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! Why does the Buddha say that all conditioned activities are of the characteristic of Impermanence?"

The Buddha said: "O Mañjuśrī! Now listen attentively! All conditioned activities are like the city of the Gandharvas, having no real characteristic; like a flash of lightning; like floating clouds; like mist and fog; like a house; like a candle-flame in the wind; like foam rising on the surface of the water; like the heart of the plantain (the pith within the banana stalk); like all marks that are scratched and drawn; like a flower in empty space; like the reflections and shadows of dreams and illusions; like the joys and sorrows of saṃsāra; like all rivers flowing and streaming; like all the waves of the sea.

Thus it is, thus it is. All sentient beings, in accord with the conditions that give rise to them, are unable to know, unable to see, unable to ponder, and unable to clearly understand. Only the Buddha is able to know thus, to see thus, to ponder thus, and to clearly understand thus.

Why is this so? Because all conditioned activities are precisely the characteristic of voidness (Empty Characteristic—Śūnyalakṣaṇa), are precisely true emptiness, ultimate emptiness. They are the Three Emptinesses, and the Emptiness of Emptiness.

Thus should one understand. Why is this so? They are precisely the Great Emptiness, precisely the Emptiness of the Tathāgata.

To be thus, to know thus, to see thus, to ponder thus, and to clearly understand thus—the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva attains such a characteristic."

The Buddha further said to Mañjuśrī, the Dharma-Prince: "If a Bodhisattva practices the Dāna-pāramitā (the Perfection of Giving), the Śīla-pāramitā (the Perfection of Upholding the Precepts), the Kṣānti-pāramitā (the Perfection of Patient Endurance), the Vīrya-pāramitā (the Perfection of Diligence), the Dhyāna-pāramitā (the Perfection of Meditative Concentration), and the Prajñā-pāramitā (the Perfection of Wisdom), he should likewise clearly understand the characteristic thus."

At that time the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara (Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva) addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! Why is this Sūtra named 'Producing the Characteristic of the Tathāgata'?"

The Buddha said: "O Avalokiteśvara! As for this Sūtra: if, after the extinction of the Tathāgata, it shall widely perform the work of a Buddha—for this reason this Sūtra is named 'Producing the Characteristic of the Tathāgata.' If, after this Sūtra is extinguished, the Buddha-Dharma is extinguished in accord with it—therefore it is named 'Producing the Characteristic of the Tathāgata.' If this Sūtra abides, then the Buddha-Dharma also abides—therefore it is named 'Producing the Characteristic of the Tathāgata.' Why is this so? Because all Bodhisattvas constantly serve and make offerings to this Sūtra. For this meaning, it is named 'Producing the Characteristic of the Tathāgata.'"

At that time the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara again addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! As for this Sūtra: if a person upholds, maintains, reads, and recites it, and expounds it for others, then I shall straightaway protect and uphold that person."

The Buddha said: "This Sūtra possesses majestic virtue, able to cause all the Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas, together with the Devas and humans, all to come together and assemble (to come and gather together)."

Those Bodhisattvas at the same time praised, saying: "Excellent! Excellent, World-Honored One! We shall expound it for the sake of others."

The Buddha said: "This Heart of the Great Power and Secret of Vajrapāṇi is able to bestow upon all sentient beings the attainment of peace and joy."

At that time Vajra, the Lord of Secrets, addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! Why is this Sūtra named 'The Very First Characteristic of the Dharma-Realm'?"

The Buddha said: "Good son! Listen attentively! As for this Sūtra: after all the Tathāgatas were born, passing through thirty-two days, they entered into the Mahābala Samādhi upon Mount Mahā-mucilinda and spoke it—therefore this Sūtra is named 'The Very First Characteristic of the Dharma-Realm.' As for this Sūtra: when all sentient beings first give rise to the Bodhicitta, they straightaway abide in the Bodhi Path—therefore it is named 'The Very First Characteristic of the Dharma-Realm.' This Sūtra possesses majestic virtue, able to cause immeasurable, boundless Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas to obtain all the Samādhis made manifest before them—therefore it is named 'The Very First Characteristic of the Dharma-Realm.' Furthermore, this Sūtra possesses majestic virtue, able to cause immeasurable,

boundless sentient beings to obtain the Path of the Śrāvaka—therefore it is named 'The Very First Characteristic of the Dharma-Realm.'

O Vajrapāṇi! If a person upholds, maintains, reads, and recites it, and expounds it for the sake of others, he will be as the only child of all the Tathāgatas, swiftly freed from saṃsāra, and after the end of his life he will arrive at the Path of Nirvāṇa."

Vajrapāṇi said: "The Buddhas, of Great Loving-kindness and Compassion, constantly rescue and liberate all sentient beings, causing them to be freed from saṃsāra, to be delivered from all sufferings and calamities. They constantly speak the Dharma of the Great Wisdom of the Muni, washing clean the defiled and filthy seeds of the afflictions of sentient beings."

The Buddha said: "Excellent! Excellent, O Lord of Secrets! If a person upholds, maintains, reads, and recites it, expounds it for the sake of others, makes offerings, reveres, writes it out himself or has others write it out, truly contemplates and ponders it, and constantly bears it in mind, then that person will straightaway obtain the Koṭi Samādhi.

He will moreover behold Koṭi Tathāgatas together with all the Bodhisattvas and their retinues. He should then make vast and great offerings, esteeming and revering them. All articles of use such as: clothing, bedding and couches, food and drink, medicines… all are to be reverently bestowed, and he obtains great peace and joy.

That good son has planted wholesome roots, attains Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi, and is able to hear those Tathāgatas, the Worthy Ones of Perfect and Complete Enlightenment, expound the Wondrous Dharma, bearing it in mind without forgetting. He moreover obtains the power of the majestic virtue of the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi. The Wrathful King of Great Power and Majestic Virtue (Mahābala Teja Krodha Rāja) constantly performs protection and upholding, accomplishing peace and joy for all sentient beings."

When the World-Honored One had finished speaking this Sūtra, then the assembly of the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, Mañjuśrī, Vajragarbha… all the Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas of Compassion and Wisdom, the Venerable Subhūti, the Great Śrāvakas, together with all the sentient beings, all the worldly hosts, the Devas, humans, Nāga Kings, Asuras, Gandharvas… who had come from the ten directions to attend the gathering, having heard what the Buddha taught, all rejoiced and then withdrew.

📜Why does this text contain “…”?

The “…” is an abbreviation carried over from the Pāli original itself, called peyyāla. The early canon was memorized and recited, so passages repeated verbatim from a preceding discourse were commonly contracted to an elision mark rather than written out in full. Venerable Thích Minh Châu's translation preserves this convention. Some texts therefore look short — but that is the canonical form, not missing content or a truncated translation. The elided passages can be read in full in the preceding discourses of the same chapter.
