Sons of the Buddha! What is the great bodhisattva’s seventh dedication, that of equally according with all sentient beings?
Sons of the Buddha! The great bodhisattva accords with all the roots of goodness he has accumulated, such as: small roots of goodness, great roots of goodness, vast roots of goodness, numerous roots of goodness, measureless roots of goodness, various kinds of roots of goodness, roots of goodness as numerous as motes of dust, countless roots of goodness, boundless roots of goodness, inconceivable roots of goodness, immeasurable roots of goodness, roots of goodness within the sphere of the Buddhas, roots of goodness within the sphere of the Dharma, roots of goodness within the sphere of the Sangha, roots of goodness within the sphere of spiritual benefactors, roots of goodness within the sphere of all sentient beings, roots of goodness within the sphere of skillful means,
roots of goodness within the sphere of cultivating all wholesome qualities, roots of goodness within the inner sphere, roots of goodness within the outer sphere, roots of goodness within the sphere of boundless aids to the Path, roots of goodness from diligently cultivating every form of giving, roots of goodness from firmly resolving ultimately to uphold pure moral discipline, roots of goodness from willingly enduring suffering in every act of giving, roots of goodness from maintaining constant diligence without regression, roots of goodness from entering measureless samadhis through great skillful means, roots of goodness from skillfully contemplating with wisdom, roots of goodness from knowing the different mental activities of all sentient beings,
roots of goodness from amassing boundless merit, roots of goodness from diligently cultivating the bodhisattva practices, and roots of goodness that universally encompass and nurture all worlds.
Sons of the Buddha! With regard to these roots of goodness, the great bodhisattva abides in their cultivation, gathers and accumulates them to completion, and understands them with a purified mind. When initiating and revealing them, the bodhisattva attains a mind capable of patient acceptance, closes the gates to the evil destinies, skillfully disciplines the six faculties, perfects dignified conduct and right practice, departs from all inverted views, becomes worthy to serve as a vessel of the Dharma of all Buddhas, and can be an excellent field of merit for sentient beings.
This bodhisattva is protected and kept in mind by the Buddhas, increases the Buddhas’ roots of goodness, carries out the work of the Buddhas within the vows of the Buddhas, attains mastery of mind equal to that of the Buddhas of the three times, reaches the Buddhas’ seat of awakening, enters the Buddhas’ powers of wisdom, possesses the Buddhas’ marks and characteristics, completely transcends the world, takes no delight in birth in the heavens, covets neither wealth nor pleasure, and clings to no practice of Dharma.
The bodhisattva dedicates all these roots of goodness to becoming a treasury of merit for all sentient beings. Abiding on the unsurpassed Path, the bodhisattva universally protects everyone; on the paths of delusion, the bodhisattva rescues suffering beings and establishes them securely in all wholesome qualities; opens the gate to unsurpassed awakening; pervades every sphere without cessation or exhaustion; raises the banner of wisdom to adorn and purify the great Path; and can manifest throughout all worlds, enabling beings to eliminate their defilements.
The bodhisattva skillfully disciplines the mind, is born into the family of the Buddhas, purifies the Buddha lineage, perfects merit, becomes a great field of merit and a refuge for the world, establishes sentient beings in purity, and constantly and diligently cultivates all roots of goodness.
Sons of the Buddha! When the great bodhisattva cultivates roots of goodness through the power of the great bodhi mind and pure aspiration, the bodhisattva thinks: “These roots of goodness are accumulated by the bodhi mind, contemplated by the bodhi mind, initiated by the bodhi mind, desired by the bodhi mind, and increased by the bodhi mind. They are all cultivated out of compassion for all sentient beings, all cultivated in direct quest of wisdom embracing all modes of knowledge, and all cultivated to perfect the Tathagata’s ten powers of wisdom.”
By contemplating in this way, the bodhisattva’s roots of goodness increase and never regress.
Sons of the Buddha! The great bodhisattva further thinks: “Through the power of these roots of goodness, may I practice the bodhisattva conduct throughout all future kalpas and give everything to all sentient beings. May countless worlds be filled with precious jewels; countless worlds be filled with clothing; countless worlds be filled with fragrances; countless worlds be filled with ornaments; countless worlds be filled with precious mani jewels; countless worlds be filled with beautiful flowers; countless worlds be filled with delicious food; countless worlds be filled with wealth; countless worlds be filled with beds and seats; and countless worlds be filled with jeweled crowns, spread with fine garments, and hung with precious canopies.”
Suppose one person were constantly to approach the bodhisattva and make requests until the end of all future kalpas. The bodhisattva would give that person all the foregoing things without ever growing weary or bored and without pausing even briefly. As with that one person, so it would be with all sentient beings.
Sons of the Buddha! When giving in this way, the great bodhisattva has no deceitful mind, no mind of seeking reward, no desire for fame, no regret, and no distress. The bodhisattva only brings forth the resolve to seek all-knowledge, the resolve to relinquish everything, and the compassionate resolve to teach and mature sentient beings until they attain unsurpassed awakening.
Sons of the Buddha! Dedicating roots of goodness in this way, the great bodhisattva continually gives until the end of all future kalpas and constantly abides in the mind of all-knowledge.
Sons of the Buddha! The great bodhisattva further thinks: “For the sake of all sentient beings, I wish countless worlds to be filled with precious elephants, each possessing all seven limbs, extremely well-bred, bearing golden banners upon its back, draped in golden nets, and adorned with jewels, so that I may give them away. May countless worlds be filled with precious horses like the king of dragon-horses, adorned with all kinds of treasures, so that I may give them away.
May countless worlds be filled with female musicians skilled in instrumental music and song, producing every kind of subtle and wondrous sound, so that I may give them away. May countless worlds be filled with men and women, so that I may give them away. May countless worlds be filled with my own bodies, so that, having brought forth the bodhi mind, I may give them away.
May countless worlds be filled with my own heads, so that, having brought forth a vigilant mind, I may give them away. May countless worlds be filled with my own eyes, so that I may give them away. May countless worlds be filled with my own blood, flesh, bones, and marrow, so that I may give them all away without attachment or regret.
May countless worlds be filled with royal thrones, so that I may give them away. May countless worlds be filled with servants and attendants, so that I may give them away.”
With a vast mind of relinquishment, the great bodhisattva gives all such bodies and possessions to sentient beings until the end of all future kalpas. As with one sentient being, so it is with every sentient being throughout the realm of sentient beings.
Sons of the Buddha! In one world, throughout all future kalpas, the great bodhisattva practices the bodhisattva conduct and gives such things to one sentient being, and likewise gives them to all sentient beings, satisfying them all. As with giving in one world, so it is in every world throughout the reaches of space and the Dharma-realm.
The bodhisattva’s great compassion universally encompasses all without gap or interruption. Out of pity for everyone, the bodhisattva provides whatever petitioners need. The bodhisattva never allows giving to cease because of obstructing conditions and does not entertain even the slightest weariness for so much as the snap of a finger.
Sons of the Buddha! When giving in this way, the great bodhisattva brings forth these states of mind:
A mind without attachment, a mind without bondage, a liberated mind, a mind of great power, a profoundly deep mind, a mind that skillfully gathers in, a mind free from grasping, a mind that apprehends no recipient, a skillfully disciplined mind, an undistracted mind, a mind free from false grasping, a mind of precious nature, a mind that seeks no recompense, a mind that fully understands all dharmas, a mind of great dedication, a mind that skillfully resolves all principles, a mind that establishes all sentient beings in unsurpassed wisdom, a mind that produces the great radiance of Dharma, and a mind that realizes and enters the wisdom of all-knowledge.
Sons of the Buddha! With every thought, the great bodhisattva dedicates the accumulated roots of goodness in this way:
May all sentient beings abound in treasures and lack nothing. May all sentient beings accomplish an inexhaustible treasury of great merit. May all sentient beings possess every kind of peace and happiness. May all sentient beings increase the bodhisattva practices. May all sentient beings perfect measureless, supreme, and foremost qualities. May all sentient beings attain non-retrogression in the Buddha Vehicle. May all sentient beings universally behold all Buddhas throughout the ten directions. May all sentient beings completely transcend worldly afflictions. May all sentient beings attain minds of purity and equality. May all sentient beings leave every obstruction and difficulty behind and attain all-knowledge.
Sons of the Buddha! When making such dedications, the great bodhisattva gives rise to a joyful mind: to bring benefit, peace, and happiness to all sentient beings; to enable all sentient beings to attain a mind of equality; to enable all sentient beings to attain a mind of relinquishment; to establish all sentient beings in the resolve to give everything; to establish all sentient beings in the joyful resolve to give; to establish all sentient beings in the resolve to give and thereby escape poverty forever; to establish all sentient beings in the resolve to give countless treasures; to establish all sentient beings in the resolve to give universally, give immeasurably, and give everything;

to enable all sentient beings fully to possess all impartial roots of goodness and universally receive the Buddhas’ anointment upon the crown; and to enable all sentient beings to perfect a purified body of wisdom and become the most honored ones in all realms.
Sons of the Buddha! In this way, the great bodhisattva compassionately benefits and brings peace and happiness to all sentient beings. The bodhisattva enables them all to attain purity, depart from greed and jealousy, attain sublime joy, possess great merit, give rise to great faith and understanding, forever abandon anger and defilement, purify their minds and make them upright and gentle, be free from flattery, crookedness, and delusion, steadfastly and unwaveringly practice the conduct of liberation, maintain an impartial mind that never regresses, fully accomplish the pure power of wholesome qualities without loss or damage, dedicate skillfully, constantly cultivate right conduct and discipline sentient beings, eradicate all evil karma,
personally cultivate every ascetic practice and every root of goodness, and encourage sentient beings to cultivate likewise.
For the sake of sentient beings, the bodhisattva endures every kind of suffering, observes roots of goodness with the eye of wisdom, knows that all roots of goodness have wisdom as their nature, and then skillfully dedicates them to all sentient beings:
To enable all sentient beings to abide in every pure merit; to enable all sentient beings to gather in every root of goodness and know the nature and meaning of all merits; to enable all sentient beings universally to purify every root of goodness; and to enable all sentient beings to plant wholesome qualities within the sphere of merit without regret.
To enable all sentient beings universally to gather in every sentient being and lead each one to the stage of all-knowledge; and to enable all sentient beings universally to gather in every root of goodness, each corresponding to impartial dedication.
This great bodhisattva further dedicates all roots of goodness in this way:
May all sentient beings attain ultimate security. May all sentient beings attain ultimate purity. May all sentient beings attain ultimate peace and happiness. May all sentient beings attain ultimate liberation. May all sentient beings attain ultimate equality. May all sentient beings attain ultimate illumination. May all sentient beings ultimately abide in pure and wholesome qualities. May all sentient beings attain unobstructed vision. May all sentient beings skillfully discipline their own minds. May all sentient beings possess the ten powers of wisdom and discipline every kind of being.
Sons of the Buddha! When dedicating in this way, the great bodhisattva does not cling to karma, its retribution, the body, possessions, lands, directions, sentient beings, the absence of sentient beings, all dharmas, or the absence of all dharmas.
Sons of the Buddha! When dedicating in this way, the great bodhisattva gives these roots of goodness universally to the world, wishing all sentient beings to accomplish Buddha-wisdom, attain pure minds and luminous wisdom, remain inwardly calm and still, remain unmoved by external conditions, and increase and perfect the Buddha lineage of the three times.
Sons of the Buddha! When the great bodhisattva cultivates dedication in this way, the bodhisattva surpasses all and cannot be excelled. Even if all the languages of every world praised the bodhisattva in unison, they could never exhaust that praise.
The bodhisattva universally cultivates all bodhisattva practices, can travel to every Buddha-land, universally beholds all Buddhas without obstruction, and can also universally behold the practices of all bodhisattvas. Through skillful means, the bodhisattva explains to sentient beings the sentences and profound meanings of all dharmas; attains dharanis and expounds the wondrous Dharma without rest until the end of future time; and, for the sake of all sentient beings, in every thought manifests bodies like reflections throughout ineffably ineffable worlds to make offerings to the Buddhas and universally adorn and purify ineffably ineffable Buddha-lands.
The bodhisattva practices the adornment and purification of Buddha-lands with wisdom that never knows weariness or satisfaction. In each thought, the bodhisattva enables ineffably ineffable hundreds of thousands of kotis of nayutas of sentient beings to perfect purity and equality. In all those lands, the bodhisattva diligently cultivates every paramita, gathers in sentient beings, and accomplishes pure karma.
The bodhisattva attains an unobstructed faculty of hearing and universally hears the Dharma-wheel proclaimed by every Buddha in ineffably ineffable worlds; having heard it, the bodhisattva retains and diligently cultivates it without ever abandoning it. This bodhisattva abides in spiritual powers that attain nothing, rely on nothing, contrive nothing, and cling to nothing. Within a single kshana, within the snap of a finger, the bodhisattva emanates bodies throughout ineffably many Buddha-lands and shares the same vision and understanding as all bodhisattvas.
Sons of the Buddha! While cultivating the bodhisattva conduct in this way, the great bodhisattva can accomplish and perfect measureless, ineffably ineffable pure merits; how much more so upon attaining unsurpassed bodhi: all Buddha-lands are equally purified; all sentient beings are equally purified; all bodies are equally purified; all faculties are equally purified; all karmic fruits are equally purified; all assemblies and seats of awakening are equally purified; the perfection of all practices is equally purified; all wisdom of dharmas and skillful means is equally purified; all aspirations and dedications are equally purified; and all spheres of spiritual powers are equally purified.
Sons of the Buddha! When dedicating in this way, the great bodhisattva attains the joyful Dharma-gate of all pure merits and is perfectly adorned with measureless merit.
When the great bodhisattva dedicates in this way, sentient beings do not conflict with any land; lands do not conflict with any sentient being; lands and sentient beings do not conflict with any karma; karma does not conflict with sentient beings or lands; contemplation does not conflict with mind; mind does not conflict with contemplation; mind and contemplation do not conflict with their objects; objects do not conflict with mind and contemplation; karma does not conflict with retribution; retribution does not conflict with karma; karma does not conflict with the paths of karma; the paths of karma do not conflict with karma; the nature of dharmas does not conflict with their characteristics; the characteristics of dharmas do not conflict with their nature;
the arising of dharmas does not conflict with their nature; the nature of dharmas does not conflict with their arising; the equality of lands does not conflict with the equality of sentient beings; the equality of sentient beings does not conflict with the equality of lands; the equality of all sentient beings does not conflict with the equality of all dharmas; the equality of all dharmas does not conflict with the equality of all sentient beings; the equal boundary of freedom from desire does not conflict with all sentient beings’ equal abiding; all sentient beings’ equal abiding does not conflict with the equal boundary of freedom from desire; the past does not conflict with the future; the future does not conflict with the past; the past and future do not conflict with the present;
the present does not conflict with the past and future; the equality of the world does not conflict with the equality of the Buddhas; the equality of the Buddhas does not conflict with the equality of the world; bodhisattva practice does not conflict with all-knowledge; and all-knowledge does not conflict with bodhisattva practice.
Sons of the Buddha! When dedicating in this way, the great bodhisattva attains equality of karma, equality of retribution, equality of body, equality of skillful means, equality of vows, equality of all sentient beings, equality of all lands, equality of all practices, equality of all wisdom, and equality with the Buddhas of the three times. The bodhisattva serves all Buddhas, makes offerings to all bodhisattvas, plants every root of goodness, fulfills every great vow, teaches all sentient beings, clearly knows every kind of karma, serves and makes offerings to all spiritual benefactors, enters every seat of awakening, penetrates every true teaching, and fully perfects all wholesome qualities.
Sons of the Buddha! This is the great bodhisattva’s seventh dedication, that of equally according with all sentient beings.
When the great bodhisattva accomplishes this dedication, the bodhisattva can vanquish every demonic foe, uproot the thorns of sensual defilement, attain the joy of liberation, abide in the nondual nature, possess great awesome virtue, liberate sentient beings, become a king of merit with unobstructed spiritual powers, travel through every land, enter quiescent cessation, possess every kind of body, accomplish the bodhisattva conduct, attain mastery of mind in all practices and vows, clearly discern and understand all dharmas, be universally reborn in every Buddha-land, attain the unobstructed faculty of hearing and hear every sound in every land, attain the purified wisdom-eye and behold all Buddhas without ever being apart from them even briefly,
accomplish roots of goodness in every sphere without any thought of superiority or inferiority, and attain nothing whatsoever in regard to any dharma.
In this way, the great bodhisattva equally accords with all sentient beings and dedicates every root of goodness.
At that time, the bodhisattva Vajra Banner, relying upon the Buddha’s spiritual power, universally contemplated the ten directions and spoke these verses:
Or heads, eyes, hands, and feet,
Or bodies, flesh, bones, and marrow—
Throughout measureless lands in the ten directions,
They give them universally to every kind of being.
To liberate all sentient beings,
Bodhisattvas constantly cultivate the supreme practice of dedication,
Causing all throughout the three realms to attain peace and joy
And enabling them all to attain the unsurpassed fruit.
The power of bodhisattvas’ vows is limitless and unobstructed,
Gathering in all worlds;
They dedicate in this way to every living being
Without ever briefly giving rise to discrimination.
The bodhisattvas’ dedication reaches the farther shore
And universally opens wondrous and pure Dharma-gates;
Their wisdom equals that of the World-Honored One,
And they discern ultimate truth to perfection.
Bodhisattvas contemplate all worlds,
Seeing the karma of body, speech, and mind as equal;
They also establish sentient beings in equality,
Like the unsurpassed World-Honored One.
Bodhisattvas universally benefit all living beings
And dedicate boundless merit,
Wishing their majestic radiance to surpass the world
And that they attain bodies of heroic, mighty power.
Dharmas are quiescent and not quiescent;
They leave behind these two discriminating thoughts,
Know all discrimination to be worldly views,
And enter the right position, where discrimination ends.
Such true Sons of the Buddha
Are born through transformation from the Buddha-Dharma;
Bodhisattvas dedicate so skillfully
That all doubts and delusions in the world are destroyed.
