Exposition of the Bhūtārocana Sutta
Truthfully Announcing Supernormal Attainments
Background
The Bhūtārocana Sutta is found in the Vinaya Piṭaka, specifically in the Bhikkhunī Pātimokkha. This code records the rules of discipline within the Sangha, especially rules that protect the spiritual purity of the Buddhist community.
Bhūtārocana in Pali means “truthful declaration” or “proclamation of the truth,” while “superhuman attainments” refers to spiritual abilities beyond ordinary human capacity: the iddhi, or psychic powers, and abhiññā, the superhuman knowledges that noble ones may possess. Thus this sutta centers on the ethical issue of declaring or publicly announcing one’s own spiritual abilities before others. This is one of the most sensitive matters in Theravāda Buddhist practice: how a bhikkhunī or bhikkhu presents herself or himself.
Main Content
The Bhūtārocana Sutta establishes that not everyone has the right to announce at will that they have attained supernormal achievements. If a bhikkhunī lies or exaggerates about her abilities, for example by provoking others, demonstrating psychic power, or claiming spiritual capacities she does not possess, this is a serious offense.
The central principle here is satya (truth). Every declaration must arise from direct knowledge, from genuine realization. If someone falsely declares, “I have performed psychic power,” “I can hear sounds from afar,” or “I have attained a certain stage of the Path,” while in fact there is no basis for it, then this is not only an error but also a violation of the discipline. Such a violation harms not only one’s own credibility but also weakens the Dharma and the Buddhist community.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
