– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– CLARIFYING THE BEGINNING SECTION OF THE RULES OF TRAINING FOR THE COMMUNITY:
8. "One must train: one shall not enter a layperson's house with the robe turned inside out and draped over the shoulder."
Turned inside out: both sides turned inside out and draped over the shoulder.
One shall not enter a layperson's house with the robe turned inside out and draped over the shoulder. If there is rain and wind, one may drape it over one side. If the right shoulder is bare, one may drape it over to the left side. If both shoulders are fully covered, one may drape it over to the right side, but the elbow must not be exposed. When going on alms round, if one fears soiling the robe, one may drape the robe inside out over the shoulder without exposing the elbow — in that case there is no offense. If one is lax in the sense faculties and enters a layperson's house with the robe turned inside out and draped over the shoulder, that is to show disregard for the rule of training. Except in the case of mental derangement, there is no offense. Therefore it is said:
"One must train: one shall not enter a layperson's house with the robe turned inside out and draped over the shoulder."
When the Buddha was dwelling at the city of Sāvatthī, as described in full above. At that time, the group of six bhikkhus entered a layperson's house walking on tiptoe, and were criticized by people of the world:
— Why do the Śākya monastics walk like prostitutes, thieves, or crawling snakes? These are depraved persons — what virtue do they possess!
The bhikkhus heard this and went to report the matter to the Blessed One. The Buddha then ordered the group of six bhikkhus to be summoned. When they had come, the Buddha asked:
— Is this matter true?
— It is true, Blessed One.
— From now on, one shall not enter a layperson's house walking on tiptoe.
Then the Buddha commanded all the bhikkhus dwelling at Sāvatthī to assemble, and for the sake of ten benefits he laid down the precept for the bhikkhus — even those who have already heard it must hear it again:
