30. "A rule to be trained in: One must not open one's mouth and wait for food in order to eat."
One must not open one's mouth and wait for food in order to eat: When eating, a bhikkhu should eat in the manner of a king elephant on a snow mountain — that is, when food enters the mouth, he immediately uses his trunk to push it deep inside and distribute it evenly throughout the mouth. He should swallow the previous mouthful before placing the next one in, and must not open his mouth and wait for food. If the mouth is afflicted with sores, one may open the mouth and wait without incurring an offense. If one is negligent with regard to the sense faculties and opens the mouth to wait for food in order to eat, this constitutes disregard for the rule to be trained in. Except in the case of mental derangement, there is no offense. Therefore it is said:
"A rule to be trained in: One must not open one's mouth and wait for food in order to eat."
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī — the full account is as above. At that time, a lay devotee came to the monastery to offer a meal of pure food to the Sangha. During the meal, the group of six bhikkhus opened their mouths and had food tossed into them. People ridiculed them, saying:
—Why do these Śākyan monastics behave like dissolute persons, tossing food into their mouths to eat? These are depraved individuals — what manner of religious conduct is this!
The bhikkhus then reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Buddha immediately ordered the group of six bhikkhus to be summoned. When they arrived, the Buddha asked:
—Did this thing actually occur?
—It did indeed occur, Blessed One.
—From this day forward, you must not toss food into the mouth.
Thereupon the Buddha instructed all the bhikkhus residing in the city of Sāvatthī to assemble together, and for ten benefits he established this precept for the bhikkhus — even those who have already heard it must hear it again:
