– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– EXPLICATING THE BEGINNING PORTION OF THE SEKHIYA RULES:

– EXPLICATING THE REMAINING PORTION OF THE SEKHIYA RULES.

28. "One should train: One must not stick out the tongue while eating."

Sticking out the tongue while eating: to stick out the tongue so that food rests upon it, and only then to close the mouth. If the monk on duty for the month, or one overseeing the matter of food and drink, wishes to know whether the food is raw or cooked, salty or bland, sour or sweet, he is permitted to place food in the palm of his hand and taste it with the tongue; there is no offense. If one is ill, one is permitted to place salt in the palm of the hand and taste it; there is no offense.

If, through unrestrained faculties, one sticks out the tongue while eating, this is regarded as a Sekhiya rule that must be trained in. Except in the case of one whose mind is deranged, there is no offense. Therefore it is said:

"One should train: One must not stick out the tongue while eating."

When the Buddha was dwelling at the city of Śrāvastī, as described in full above. At that time a householder came to the monastery to offer a meal to the community of monks. While eating, the group of six monks took large mouthfuls of food, and people of the world laughed at them in derision:

—Why do Śākyan recluses behave like the dissolute, like cattle, like goats, like camels, like hungry prisoners, eating such large mouthfuls? These are men of ruin; what spiritual conduct do they possess!

The monks then reported the matter to the Blessed One. The Buddha immediately ordered that the group of six monks be summoned. When they arrived, the Buddha asked:

—Did this matter truly occur as reported?

—It is truly so, Blessed One.

—From this day forward, you must not eat large mouthfuls.

Thereupon, the Buddha instructed all the monks dwelling at Śrāvastī to assemble together, and for ten benefits he laid down this rule for the monks—so that even those who have already heard it must hear it again:
