– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– RULES OF DISCIPLINE FOR BHIKKHUNĪS

– EXPLAINING THE FIRST SECTION OF THE 141 PĀCITTIYAS

74. RULE: MAKING A CHEST WRAP TOO LARGE IN SIZE.

When the Buddha was dwelling in the city of Sāvatthī, at that time there was a young and comely bhikkhunī who, while wearing her robe and walking on the road, had her breasts prominently visible. Some young men, upon seeing this, laughed. The bhikkhunīs heard of this and reported the matter to Mahāpajāpatī. Mahāpajāpatī then brought the matter and presented it before the Blessed One. Thereupon the Buddha instructed: "From now on, bhikkhunīs should make a saṃkakṣikā."

Furthermore, at that time some bhikkhunīs used strips of cloth to make a saṃkakṣikā that was long and wide. Thereupon the Buddha instructed: "From now on, when cutting strips of cloth, one should cut them according to the proper measure." The Buddha then told Mahāpajāpatī to convey the order to all the bhikkhunīs living in the city of Sāvatthī to assemble together, and that even those who had already heard it must hear it again:

—If a bhikkhunī makes a saṃkakṣikā, she should make it according to the proper measure: four handspans of Sugatā in length and two handspans in width. If she makes it exceeding that measure, she must cut it down and then confess the pācittiya offense.

EXPLANATION:
