115. PRECEPT: DEPARTING WITHOUT RETURNING THE ROOM.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī, at that time the bhikkhunī Kālī received a room belonging to the Saṅgha, then closed the door and departed. Afterward, a visiting bhikkhunī who was a senior elder came and, receiving a room in turn according to the proper order, saw the door of the room closed, and complained: "This is a room of the Saṅgha—why has someone closed the door and gone away?"
The bhikkhunis then reported this to Mahāpajāpatī. Thereupon the Buddha ordered that bhikkhunī to be called before him. When she arrived, the Buddha asked:
—Did this matter truly occur?
—It is true, Blessed One!
—That is a wrong thing. Why did you receive a room of the Saṅgha and then neither return it nor restore it, but instead closed the door and departed? From this day forward, such conduct must not be done.
Thereupon the Buddha instructed Mahāpajāpatī to proclaim an order to all the bhikkhunis dwelling in the city of Sāvatthī to assemble together, and even those who had already heard it must hear it again:
—If a bhikkhunī departs without relinquishing the beds and bedding of the Saṅgha, she commits a pācittiya offense.
EXPLANATION:
Beds and bedding of the Saṅgha: Such as sleeping beds, sitting beds, pillows and mattresses, and bolsters.
Without relinquishing: Not returning them, and departing elsewhere without informing anyone—this constitutes a pācittiya offense.
Pācittiya: As stated above. If a bhikkhunī wishes to go anywhere, she must return the beds and bedding and inform the keeper of the beds and bedding before departing. If she departs without returning them, she commits a pācittiya offense. If the room is left without being vacated and someone else subsequently occupies it, she commits a Vinaya transgression. Therefore the Blessed One has spoken (as above).
