– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– RULES OF DISCIPLINE FOR BHIKKHUNĪS

– EXPLICATING THE FIRST SECTION OF THE 141 PĀCITTIYAS

100. RULE: CONFERRING ORDINATION UPON A MARRIED WOMAN UNDER TWELVE YEARS OF AGE.

When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī, at that time young women of the Sakya clan, the Koliya clan, the Malla clan, and the Licchavi clan had taken husbands before going forth, and having endured many hardships, they were thus mature and wise. Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī then asked the Buddha:

—Blessed One, may women who have had husbands receive the Full Ordination even if they have not yet completed twenty rains-retreats?

—They may.

Thereupon, bhikkhunīs conferred Full Ordination upon women who had taken husbands at the age of eight or nine, but because these women were too small and frail, they could not endure the hardships. The bhikkhunīs then spoke of this to Mahāpajāpatī, and Mahāpajāpatī in turn brought the matter before the Blessed One. Thereupon the Buddha instructed — and even those who have heard it must hear it again:

—If a bhikkhunī confers Full Ordination upon a woman who has had a husband but has not yet completed twelve rains-retreats, she commits a Pācittiya offence.

EXPLANATION:

Has not yet completed twelve rains-retreats: As in the case of not yet having completed twenty rains-retreats explained above.

A woman who has had a husband: One whose pure conduct has been broken. If Full Ordination is conferred upon such a person, a Pācittiya offence is committed.

Pācittiya: As explained above. If a woman who has had a husband wishes to receive Full Ordination in the Dharma and Discipline of the Tathāgata, she should first be questioned; and further, her hands, feet, and bones, and so forth, must be examined.

Therefore the Blessed One spoke thus (as above).
