– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– PRECEPTS OF THE BHIKKHUNĪS
– CONCERNING THE BEGINNING SECTION OF THE MISCELLANEOUS RULES
THE RULE ON THE USE OF WOVEN MATS.
When the Buddha was dwelling in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time a bhikkhunī spread out a woven mat to sit on while mending robes, and a bamboo splinter pierced her urinary passage, causing bleeding. The bhikkhunīs then brought the matter and reported it to the Blessed One. The Buddha instructed: "From this time forward, I do not permit bhikkhunīs to sit on bamboo mats. When mending robes, one should wipe the lecture hall or the warming room clean with a cloth, then spread the robe out to mend. If there is no such place, one should spread the robe on a bed or on a cushion to mend. If anyone sits on a bamboo mat, she commits an offense of transgressing the Vinaya. This is called the rule on the use of bamboo mats."
