– PRECEPTS OF THE BHIKKHUNĪS
– CONCERNING THE BEGINNING SECTION OF THE MISCELLANEOUS RULES
THE METHOD OF WASHING MENSTRUAL CLOTH.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time a bhikkhunī went to the women's bathing place to wash her menstrual cloth, and was reproached by the women, who said: "That śramaṇī has made this water filthy, turning it as red as that."
The bhikkhunīs then brought the matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, the Buddha instructed: "From this day forward, I do not permit the bringing of menstrual cloth to the women's bathing place for washing. Whoever washes it there commits an offense of exceeding the Vinaya. This is called the rule concerning the washing of women's menstrual cloth."
