THE USE OF MENSTRUAL CLOTHS.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time a bhikkhunī's menstrual flow soiled the bed and bedding. Mahāprajāpatī then went and addressed the Blessed One:
—Blessed One, may we sew a cloth to absorb the menstrual flow?
—You may. Old cloth should be used for sewing it, but hard objects must not be used, nor must objects be inserted deeply into the vagina to stimulate sensual desire; rather, soft material should be used to cover the urinary passage. If anyone uses a hard object to rub inside the vagina in order to alleviate desire, she commits a thullaccaya offense. This is called the use of a menstrual cloth.
