THE METHOD OF CLEANSING THE GENITALIA.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time Mahāprajāpatī came to where the Buddha was, bowed her head in reverence at his feet, stood to one side, and said to the Buddha:
—Blessed One! May women cleanse the female form (the female genitalia), which is foul and impure?
—It may be cleansed.
Thereupon, the bhikkhunīs washed the outside, but the inside remained foul and impure, and they brought this matter before the Blessed One. In the end, they asked the Buddha:
—Blessed One! May one wash the inside as well?
—It may be washed. The method of washing is to wash inward to the depth of one finger-joint, and no deeper than that. If one washes deeper than that in order to pacify lustful desires, one commits the offense of Sthūlātyaya. This is called the method of cleansing (the vagina).
