RULE 86
One should not teach the Dharma to a person who is seated while oneself is standing — a śaikṣa-karaṇīya.
(as above)
Some were uncertain and did not dare to teach the Dharma to a sick person. The Buddha instructed:
"From now on, the rule should be recited as follows":
One should not teach the Dharma to a person who is seated while oneself is standing, except in the case of illness — a śaikṣa-karaṇīya.
Whatever bhikkhu, while a person is seated and he himself is standing, intentionally teaches them the Dharma, commits a duṣkṛta requiring confession. Because it is done intentionally, it constitutes a breach of proper conduct, a duṣkṛta. If it is not done intentionally, it is a duṣkṛta.
For bhikkhunīs, and down to sāmaṇeras and sāmaṇerīs, it is a duṣkṛta. This is called an offense.
Non-offense: If one is afflicted with some form of illness, or if a King or a King's minister compels one to speak, there is no offense.
Persons who do not offend: one who offends for the first time before the rule was established, one who is mad, one whose mind is disturbed, one who is in severe pain and distress.
