3. TAKING HUMAN LIFE
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling at Vesālī. On account of this matter, he assembled the community of bhikkhus and addressed them, saying:
"From this time forward, I shall establish the training rules for the bhikkhunīs, comprising ten principles of meaning, up to and including the phrase 'for the long endurance of the true Dharma.'"
Wishing to recite the precept, one should recite it thus:
Whatever bhikkhunī intentionally takes a human life with her own hand, procures a weapon for another, praises death, or encourages another toward death, saying: "My friend, what is the use of living this wicked and miserable life? Death is better than life!" — with such an intention in mind, and by whatever means praises death or encourages another toward death — that bhikkhunī is one who has committed pārājika and is no longer permitted to live in community.
