What Is Bodhicitta? Aspiring to Enlightenment for the Sake of Sentient Beings

Sanskrit: bodhicitta · Vietnamese: Bồ đề tâm

Bodhicitta is the aspiration toward enlightenment in order to gain the ability to help sentient beings become free from suffering, regarded as the central axis of the Bodhisattva path in Mahāyāna Buddhism. This mind combines two inseparable directions: compassion wishing to reduce others' suffering, and wisdom wishing to see reality clearly and lessen ignorance and attachment to self. Bodhicitta is not a passing burst of enthusiasm, a claim to one's own nobility, or a promise to save everyone through personal power. It is nurtured through ethical conduct, Dharma study, generosity, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. Beginners can start with a manageable wholesome aspiration, act with respect for boundaries, and regularly examine whether their help truly reduces suffering or feeds the ego.

A broad aspiration with concrete action

The wish to benefit sentient beings needs to become verifiable action: causing less harm, listening, helping according to actual needs, learning regularly, and correcting mistakes. There is no need to cast yourself as a savior.

Compassion accompanies wisdom

Kindness without understanding can become imposition; understanding without compassion can become coldness. Bodhicitta develops both altruistic motivation and insight into dependent origination, non-self, and consequences.
