Pure Land practice

What Is the Pure Land? A Pure Realm and the Amitābha Path

Vietnamese: Tịnh độ

Pure Land means a pure realm, often discussed in the Mahāyāna tradition through Amitābha Buddha's Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Practitioners should not understand the Pure Land as a simple promise that merely reciting a name makes all responsibilities disappear. The Pure Land tradition emphasizes faith, aspiration, and practice: trust in the direction of enlightenment and wholesome vows, practicing Buddha recollection, keeping precepts, doing good, repentance, dedication of merit, and living with less greed, anger, and delusion. Some understand the Pure Land as a realm into which they aspire to be born; others emphasize its appearance as the mind and life are purified. Whatever the interpretation, the safe foundation is staying grounded in scripture, learning with a trustworthy teacher, and not using the practice to avoid medical care, family, the law, or responsibility toward those one has hurt.

Faith, aspiration, and practice

Faith is not blind belief; aspiration is not selfish wishing; practice is more than counting recitations. All three need an ethical life and a mind directed toward wider benefit.

The Pure Land and present life

A Pure Land practitioner still needs to speak truthfully, keep precepts, do good, and care for those nearby. If practice makes the mind kinder and more responsible, that is a sign of moving in the right direction.
