From the Vinaya: seven days at the foot of the Bodhi tree

Quoted verbatim from the Vietnamese translation by Bhikkhu Indacanda in the Inti Dharma library (Pāli Vinaya, the Great Chapter, its first section).

From the discourse: the Buddha tells of his awakening (MN 26)

Quoted verbatim from the Vietnamese translation by Ven. Thích Minh Châu in the Inti Dharma library (Majjhima Nikāya 26, The Noble Search).

Why the 8th of the 12th month?

The Inti Dharma calendar marks the 8th of the 12th lunar month as the day of Śākyamuni Buddha's enlightenment — remembering the night the Buddha awakened beneath the Bodhi tree — as the Northern tradition does, just as it keeps the Buddha's passing on the full moon of the second month in that tradition. Other traditions may remember the event on another day. Because the twelfth lunar month runs into the start of the next solar year, the 8th of the 12th month of the Bính Ngọ year (lunar year 2026) is Friday 15 January 2027 — in the solar year 2027.

Where did the Buddha awaken?

The Great Chapter of the Pāli Vinaya opens: «Soon after his awakening, the Buddha was staying at Uruvelā on the bank of the river Nerañjara at the foot of a Bodhi tree» (Bhikkhu Brahmali's English translation; Bhikkhu Indacanda's Vietnamese is quoted verbatim above). In The Noble Search (MN 26) the Buddha himself tells how he wandered through Magadha to Uruvelā, found a delightful grove with a clear river flowing nearby and villages around for alms, and sat down there to strive. The Nerañjarā is the Ni-liên-thiền of the Chinese-canon texts; the place of the awakening is now called Bodhgaya.

The night of the awakening in the texts

In the Longer Discourse with Saccaka (MN 36) the Buddha recounts the three knowledges he realised in one night. In the first watch he recollected many past lives. In the middle watch, with the divine eye, he saw beings passing away and reappearing, inferior and superior, according to their deeds. In the last watch he knew as it really is: this is suffering, this is its origin, this is its cessation, this is the path to its cessation — and his mind was freed from the defilements. The Noble Search records the knowledge that arose in him: «My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.» (Bhikkhu Sujato's English translation).

After the night of the awakening

According to the Great Chapter, the Buddha sat cross-legged at the foot of the Bodhi tree for seven days, experiencing the happiness of freedom, and in the first watch of the night reflected on dependent origination in forward and reverse order: with ignorance as condition, formations; with formations, consciousness… up to birth, with which come ageing, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair. The Request (SN 6.1) tells how, newly awakened under the Goatherd's Banyan by the Nerañjarā, he saw that what he had realised was deep and hard to see, and his mind inclined not to teach — until Brahmā Sahampati requested him to. The first teaching that followed is the Discourse on Turning the Wheel of the Dhamma, given to the five monks at the Deer Park, Isipatana.

How old was the Buddha at his awakening?

Two texts in the library give the span. The Great Discourse on the Buddha's Extinguishment (DN 16) records the Buddha telling the wanderer Subhadda that he went forth at twenty-nine, seeking the good. The Ekottarika Āgama (scroll 37) records him telling Subhadra that he began to study the way at twenty-nine and searched until he was thirty-five. So his age at the awakening is usually given as thirty-five.

Remembering the day at home

There is no required ritual. A simple way: reread the passage on the night of the awakening, sit quietly with the breath for a few minutes, then look at one link of dependent origination at work in your own life — an unpleasant feeling giving rise to craving or aversion, for example. If you wish to chant, chant the Discourse on Turning the Wheel of the Dhamma, the first teaching after the awakening, right in the library with the scrolling chanting mode.

A practice for the day

  1. 1.Read the passage of the Great Chapter above slowly; pause at the words «newly awakened».
  2. 2.Sit for five minutes with the natural breath; when a feeling arises, notice it before reacting.
  3. 3.Chant or read the Discourse on Turning the Wheel of the Dhamma and note one line to live by this week.
