Namo Manjushriye(1) Kumārabhūtāya (2) Tadyathā (3) Oṃ, Śrī Kalape (4) Mahokapai (5) Alama Kapai Sama, Samanta Kapai, Svāhā

NAMO MAMÏJU’SRÌYE KUMÀRABHÙTÀYA

TADYATHÀ: OMÏ ‘SRÌ KALAPE MAHOKAPAI ALAMA KAPAI SAMA SAMANTA KAPAI SVÀHÀ

At that time, after Manjushri, Prince of the Dharma, had proclaimed this dharani before the great assembly, all the Tathagatas throughout the worlds of the ten directions, the devas, nagas, and eight classes of beings, and the entire great assembly praised him together, saying: “Excellent! Excellent, Manjushri, Youthful Bodhisattva Mahasattva! Through the power of your great compassionate vow, in this evil age you pity sentient beings of scant merit and skillfully expound this inconceivable Wishing-Jewel Treasury of the Wondrous Dharma, thereby benefiting sentient beings and creating inexhaustible blessings for them.”

Then Manjushri told the great assembly: “In the past, I received this dharani in the presence of a Buddha. Whenever the declining kalpa comes and the merit of beings is exhausted, I proclaim it so that good men, good women, bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, and upasikas who seek the path of bodhi in that evil age may guide all beings, swiftly enable them to accomplish every wholesome deed, and cross the great sea of suffering of birth and death. I therefore exhort them to accept and uphold these wondrous divine phrases.

“If good men or good women diligently recite this dharani day and night, remembering it without forgetting, or merely praise its inconceivable power and exhort and teach others to believe in, accept, and wholeheartedly uphold it and to practice deeds of benefit, then all the evil karma of those good men and women, including the five uninterrupted offenses, will be entirely extinguished. They will never again sink and revolve in the great sea of birth and death and will forever be free from fear of the evil destinies of the three paths.

Wherever they are born, they will attain knowledge of former lives; their six faculties will be pure; they will possess all the excellent marks, a handsome and dignified appearance, and radiant awe-inspiring virtue. Whatever they seek will be obtained. If they previously upheld other mantras, all of them will be accomplished.

Whatever acts of giving they perform will invariably be supreme.

“If one can accept and uphold this dharani, even if one previously violated śīla—the cooling precepts—and the three karmic activities became deficient, they will again become pure. All karma arising from violations of the precepts will be eliminated. One will forever leave the evil destinies and always be born among humans and devas.

One’s faculties will be gentle and harmonious, one’s wisdom pure, and one will succeed in all undertakings. One will gain profound faith in the True Dharma; whatever one says will be believed and accepted by those who hear it. One will always prevail against enemies; all adversaries will cease their malicious intentions and be unable to cause harm.

All devas and nagas will constantly follow and protect one. One will naturally accomplish vast merit and virtue, and all who see one will admire and submit. Because my profound compassionate vows and inexhaustible merit and wisdom benefit all beings, one will receive the mindful protection of the great bodhisattvas and Tathagatas of the ten directions.

Through the power of these vows, every liberation will be accomplished.

“I shall now further explain the method of accepting and upholding this dharani, painting the image, establishing the ritual ground, making offerings, and performing the rite for seeking accomplishment. First, the practitioner should choose an auspicious day marked by favorable lunar mansions. The painter must observe the eight pure precepts.

On white cotton cloth or silk, paint the form of One-Crest Manjushri, the Youthful Bodhisattva, golden in color and seated in the half-lotus posture upon a thousand-petaled white lotus. His left hand holds a blue lotus upon which rests a precious wish-fulfilling mani jewel. His right hand faces palm outward, with the fingers extended and the five fingers hanging downward, forming the Wish-Fulfilling Mudra.

He is joyful and smiling, and his body is adorned with various jeweled garlands, a crown, and necklaces.

“After painting this image, in a pure chamber wipe and plaster a square altar. From the center outward establish the positions of three courts and fully install seventeen honored ones, as explained in the Five-Syllable Wheel Yoga Method. Offer the finest incense, delicious cakes, and sincere offerings of fruit.

“Place the image on the eastern side of the altar. The practitioner should sit on the western side, facing east toward the image. Choose the eighth day of the waxing moon to begin the recitation practice. Each day, first recite the mantra eight hundred or one thousand times. Then lie down before the image, single-mindedly recollecting me, Manjushri, and sleep. In a dream you will surely see Manjushri appearing in the form of a youth. If you see this sign, know that you have received empowerment: your aspirations will be fulfilled, whatever you seek will be obtained, and people will believe and accept whatever teachings you utter.

“There is another method. Take the medicine Mṛtyu—here called White Fox Millet—and first empower it by reciting the mantra eight thousand times. Hold this medicine in your mouth. If you then enter the royal palace or approach the officials and speak to them, everything you seek will be obtained. They will believe and accept what you say, obey you, and dare not oppose you.

“There is another method. Take the medicine Tejavatī—here called the dried sound of Beta bark. First empower it with the mantra eight thousand times, place it in an alms bowl, and go begging. You will obtain food, drink, necessary clothing, and even whatever gold, silver, and seven treasures you require. People will cherish and respect one another, draw near, and make offerings. You will prevail in every dispute.

“Again, on the eighth day of the waxing moon, light lamps before the image of Manjushri and eat the three kinds of white food. Also offer white food and various white flowers, burning white sandalwood incense. Recite this mantra eight thousand times. After completing that number, lie down and sleep before the image. I, Manjushri, will manifest a pure and wondrous form for that person, and all wishes will be fulfilled. Each day one thousand gold coins will be bestowed, but they must not be stored. Use all of them for offerings to the Three Jewels and for cultivating merit. Each day recite eight hundred times and, according to your ability and means, make offerings without interruption or omission.

“There is another method. Empower a silver bowl 108 times, eight hundred times, or twenty-one times, and place it on white silk before the image of Manjushri. Cover the bowl with white silk. After one night, early in the morning reach into the bowl and search; you will obtain eight hundred gold coins. All the foregoing methods must be performed secretly. Do not allow anyone to hear or know of them, except a single close companion who shares the same practice and vow and seeks this undertaking together with you. You must not tell outsiders, lest the empowering force immediately be lost. Therefore, be careful and discreet.

“If you can carefully follow the teaching, gold coins will be supplied every day without cessation. You cannot combine and perform all the foregoing methods together; merely accomplish one according to your preference. Beforehand, you must purify body and mind, regularly drink the five pure products of the cow, arouse a compassionate mind, and diligently follow the teaching day and night without omission. You will then realize the highest superior siddhi in this very life.

“The Heart Mantra is:

輆 屹亙阢 戩 狫 送扣

Oṃ, Samanta Śrī, Hūṃ, Svāhā

OMÏ SAMANTA ‘SRÌ HÙMÏ SVÀHÀ

The Subsidiary Heart Mantra:

輆 狣在 亙仗 狫 送扣

Oṃ, Aśa Maṇi, Hūṃ, Svāhā

OMÏ A’SA MANÏI HÙMÏ SVÀHÀ

The Mantra for Establishing the Altar Boundary:

湡 只在 亙仗 狫 送扣

Oṃ, Deśa Maṇi, Hūṃ, Svāhā

OMÏ DE’SA MANÏI HÙMÏ SVÀHÀ

The Mantra for Establishing the Boundary in the Four Directions:

湡 屹亙 巧凹 亙仗 狫 送扣

Oṃ, Sama Nata Maṇi, Hūṃ, Svāhā

OMÏ SAMA NATA MANÏI HÙMÏ SVÀHÀ

Empower water with this mantra twenty-one times and sprinkle it on the four sides; the boundary will thereby be established.

“If one constantly recites this mantra before Manjushri Bodhisattva eight hundred times every day without omission, one will receive five hundred gold coins daily. One should immediately give them as offerings to the Three Jewels. Apart from the portion used for one’s own food, they must not be stored. One must not seek meaningless or unbeneficial matters or use them contrary to the teaching.

“Every day, various cakes and fruits should always be offered to Manjushri Bodhisattva. Replace the allotted offerings at the proper time; do not allow them to become impure. Keep your body and clothing extremely clean, bathe frequently, and do not allow yourself to become filthy.

“If you see a śramana or brahmin who does not conform to the Dharma, whose face is haggard, or whose body is ugly and lacks dignified bearing, you must not laugh at, despise, or slander that person. The Great Sage Manjushri may transform and manifest in various unusual forms to test and discipline the practitioner’s mind, wishing to cause one always to arouse loving-kindness and compassion and to be universally impartial. Toward sentient beings, arouse a mind of reverence and respect, without discrimination, attachment, love, or hatred—vast and unobstructed—and ultimately contemplate that they will become Buddhas in the future.

“If practitioners can act in this manner, abide in the teaching without discrimination, and diligently recite, the Great Sage Manjushri will swiftly fulfill all their wishes. Every day, through transformation, the bowl will be filled to overflowing, and its contents will be inexhaustible.

“There is another method. Take calamus root, empower the bowl by reciting the preceding Body Mantra eight thousand times, and then place the root upside down in the bowl. Carry this bowl into a city to beg, and whatever clothing you need will be obtained according to your wishes.

“There is another method. Take benzoin, white sandalwood, and storax incense. Constantly offer these three kinds of incense. Wherever you are, continually burn this incense without interruption, and your wishes will swiftly be fulfilled.

“There is another method. Take a five-colored cord one fathom long—eight ancient Chinese feet—and recite the mantra 108 times to empower it while tying one knot. Make twenty-one knots in all. Place the knotted cord inside the bowl and set it before the image. Make offerings to Manjushri according to your ability. Each day, twenty-one liang of exceptionally fine pure gold will appear in the bowl. You must not accumulate or store this gold; use it only for giving, cultivating merit, and making offerings to the Three Jewels, and it will never be exhausted. If you accumulate, retain, or conceal it, the gold will immediately disappear and never appear again.

“There is another medicine called Susa Patana, also called Sarsapa—white mustard seed.

“There is also a medicine called Mahā Jīta. This medicine comes from the region of Shu.

“If strong winds, heavy rain, prolonged rain, or torrential downpours have continued for a long time without clearing, put the two preceding medicines together, empower them by reciting the Body Mantra eight thousand times, and throw them into the sky; the wind and rain will immediately cease. If scorching drought occurs and there is no rain, empower Susa Patana eight thousand times and scatter it into waters inhabited by nagas; heavy rain will immediately pour down.

“There is another method. Carry this empowered medicine and scatter it amid a great battle. All blades, staffs, bows, and arrows will become unusable; even if they are used, they certainly cannot cause injury.

“If it is scattered among grass, forest trees, or the rice seedlings of any fields, no kind of insect will be able to harm them.

“If it is scattered in rocky caves, bamboo forests, rice paddies, or fields of the five grains, the crops will immediately increase, yielding an inexhaustible harvest.

“If it is scattered upon one’s own head, one will prevail in every dispute. Upon entering the royal palace or the residences of great ministers and officials, all will respectfully obey one’s commands.

“If it is scattered among merchants and traders, their merchandise will not be stolen. No band of thieves or robbers will be able to plunder it.

“If it is scattered in the four directions, no ghosts, spirits, yakshas, rakshasas, or demonic apparitions will be able to cause harm.

“If it is scattered into a fire, the fire will extinguish itself and be unable to burn anything.

“If it is scattered into water, the current will immediately stop and become still.

“There are many other methods that cannot all be explained. One need only first accomplish a method and obtain a response; thereafter, whatever one undertakes at will shall be accomplished. There is no need to explain everything in detail, and of this there is certainly no doubt.

“This mantra possesses great radiant, awe-inspiring virtue. Its power is inconceivable and difficult to measure. Those who recite it will attain accomplishment, except those who lack wholehearted sincerity.”
