Thus it is true, as I myself have heard: At one time the Blessed One was dwelling in the town of the Sakya clan, in the country of Kapilavastu. At that time, in the village of Shanimaka in that town, there was a Sakya man named Kshaimaka, who had faith and reverence for the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha; who had taken refuge in the Buddha, taken refuge in the Dharma, and taken refuge in the Sangha; who had no doubt regarding the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha; and who was devoted wholeheartedly to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. This man had deep faith in the supreme Buddha, but his eyes could not see forms. Then Kshaimaka, remembering the Tathagata, addressed him from afar:
– Homage to the Buddha, the World-Honored One, the wise great dharani-holder who is able to bestow light! I take refuge in the Good Gone One of great compassion! I humbly beseech you to remember me, save and aid me, and cause my two eyes to become clear and bright!
At that time the World-Honored One, with his divine eye and divine ear surpassing the world, heard and saw this man. He said to Ananda:
– Go to the dwelling place of that Sakya man and, by means of this dharani Bright King, bless and protect him, causing his eyes to become clear and bright. Further, help him to be rescued, gathered in, nurtured, and established, so that his eyes will no longer be obscured and he will be free from every illness. You should also circulate this dharani among all four assemblies: bhiksus, bhiksunis, upasakas, and upasikas.
The World-Honored One spoke the true mantra:
Dat ne da, tha hi, li nhi, li le, chi hi, chi he, li he de, ho sau ho sau, ho da ma ninh, ho lo ho lo, no lo no lo, ta pha ha.
Ananda! This dharani Bright King heals all eye diseases caused by wind and dust, by malarial fever, by mental unrest, or by all three together.
May this dharani cause my eyes and the eyes of the person named……… to be free from pain and tearing. This is the true speech of the arhats, the true speech of the precepts, the true speech of austerity, the true speech of the seers, the true speech of dependent arising, the true speech of suffering, the true speech of origination, the true speech of cessation, the true speech of the path, and the true speech of the pratyekabuddhas. I, named…….., pray that my eyes may become clear and bright.
This dharani Bright King was spoken by the seven Buddhas, the Fully and Rightly Awakened Ones. I, Sakyamuni, the Fully and Perfectly Knowing One, now speak it. The Four Heavenly Kings, Sakra, and Brahma, lord of the Saha world, also all speak it. Ananda! I do not see anyone among gods, humans, maras, sramanas, or brahmins who recites and upholds this Pure Eye dharani and is afflicted by eye diseases such as cataracts, eye inflammation, swelling, redness, and the like. These are eye diseases caused by gods, dragons, yakshas, rakshasas, female rakshasas, pisacis, female pisacis, kumbhandas, female kumbhandas, corpse-raising spirits, shamans, and brahmin shamans. When they hear this dharani, none dares oppose it; all will be effective.
Venerable Ananda! Now receive this dharani and carry it to the village of the Sakyas to give to Kshaimaka. Also convey my words to him, saying that by day he should recite this dharani in three periods, and by night he should recite it in three periods.
Then Ananda went to that place and gave this dharani to Kshaimaka. After hearing it, Kshaimaka's eyes immediately became clear and bright; he saw and knew all things and was free from every illness.
Hearing the World-Honored One speak this sutra, gods, dragons, asuras, gandharvas, and others rejoiced exceedingly and reverently received and upheld it.
