At one time the Buddha Sakyamuni was in the country of Magadha together with his assembly of disciples. In response to the invitation of the great Brahmin householder Vimalaprabha of Wondrous Light, he went to that man's house to receive offerings. As the Buddha and the great assembly were on the road, they came to the Garden of Abundant Wealth, where there was a stupa mound. At that time the World-Honored One went to bow before that stupa mound, circumambulated it three times to the right, and offered his own kasaya robe upon the stupa mound. The World-Honored One smiled, and from that stupa mound there appeared many wondrous lights that soared into space and manifested immeasurable and boundless Buddhas, all emitting immeasurable radiance.

Good indeed, good indeed! The deeds performed today by the Buddha Sakyamuni have created an exceedingly good realm.

At that time Vajrapani Bodhisattva asked:

World-Honored One, this is nothing more than an ordinary heap of earth. Why does the Tathagata shed tears in this way, and why do the Buddhas of the ten directions all emit such great and auspicious radiance? I humbly ask the World-Honored One to reveal this.

Vajrapani! This is not an ordinary heap of earth, for the Jewel Casket Seal Dharani of the Heart of All Tathagatas is now within it. This heap of earth contains the essential secret-seal Dharma of the great whole-body relics of the Tathagatas within this jeweled stupa. The essential secret-seal Dharma of the heart dharanis of all Tathagatas, immeasurable kotis in number, is also within it. Therefore this stupa has become a jeweled stupa of relics.

How wondrous indeed! I humbly ask the World-Honored One to reveal the supreme merit of the Jewel Casket Seal Dharani Sutra, for the benefit of beings.

If anyone reads and recites this Jewel Casket Seal Dharani Sutra, it is equal to reading and reciting all the scriptures spoken by all Buddhas of the past, present, and future.

Because one reads and recites this sutra, all Tathagatas of the ten directions, without distinction of day or night, manifest their bodies and bestow blessing upon that person. Very many Tathagatas manifest, filling all of space until there is no gap. Such immeasurable Buddhas, the Tathagatas, assemble in such numbers that those who came before have not yet departed when those who follow arrive in layer upon layer; in a moment they depart and then come again, immeasurably many.

In later times, if anyone copies this sutra and places it in a jeweled stupa, that stupa is the vajra treasury stupa of all Tathagatas; it is also the secret heart dharani, the crown of the Buddha, and the eye of the Buddha. As the stupa of all Tathagatas, it is blessed and protected by the great spiritual power of ninety-nine hundred thousand myriads of kotis of Tathagatas.

If this sutra is enshrined within a Buddha image or in a multi-tiered stupa, then that image or stupa is as if made of the seven treasures; it responds to the mind with efficacy, and there is no vow that will not be fulfilled.

If any being constructs a stupa, whether large or small, and places the Jewel Casket Seal Dharani inside it, that stupa will naturally become a stupa of the seven treasures. Through the majestic power of the mantra, the stupa rises up as high as the Akanishta heaven. In all the heavenly realms through which the stupa passes, the gods gaze upon it day and night, bow to it, guard it, and make offerings to it.

World-Honored One, why is this stupa so supreme?

All this is because of the majestic spiritual power of the Jewel Casket Seal Dharani. Listen well, remember it, and do not forget it!

All Tathagatas of the present and future, their three bodies of Dharma, treasure, and transformation, together with the whole-body relics of all Buddhas of the past, are all within the Jewel Casket Seal Dharani.

I humbly ask the World-Honored One, for our sake, to speak that dharani.

Na Mo Tat Dat Li Da, Dia Vi Ca Nam Tat Ba Dat Tha Nghiet Da Nam. Um Bo Vi Ba Pha Na Pha Li, Pha Da Le Pha Da Trai, To Ro To Ro, Da Ra Da Ra, Tat Pha Dat Tha Nghiet Da, Da Do Da Le Bat Na Mau Ba Pha De Nha Da Pha Le, Mau Dat Le Tat Ma Ra Dat Tha Nghiet Da. Dat Ma Chuoc Ca Ra Bat La Mat Lit Da.

Sam Mao Da Ne, Sam Mao Da Gia. Gia La Gia La, Gia Nai Do Tat Pha, Pha Ra Noa Ne, Tat Pha Ba Ba Vi Nghiet De. Ho Ro Ho Ro Tat Pha Thu Ca Nhi Nghiet De, Tat Pha Dat Tha Nghiet Da.

In later times, in the final age of the Dharma, if among the fourfold assembly there are good men and faithful women who, for the sake of the unsurpassed path, exert themselves to build a jeweled stupa and enshrine the divine mantra, the merit produced cannot be fully expressed.

If anyone seeking blessings comes to that stupa, brings a branch of fragrant flowers or a stick of precious incense, bows and makes offerings, and circumambulates while practicing the path, then by that merit, official rank and honor will come of themselves without being sought; long life and wealth will increase of themselves without being desired; enemies, thieves, and robbers will flee of themselves without being fought; hostile thoughts and curses will return of themselves to their source without being countered by spells; epidemics and harmful influences will avoid one of themselves without being evaded; a virtuous husband or filial wife will be obtained of itself without being sought; worthy sons and beautiful daughters will be born of themselves without being sought;

and all wishes will be fulfilled according to one's intent.

At that time the great assembly of bhiksus, bhiksunis, upasakas, upasikas, gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, all the great assembly, rejoiced greatly, faithfully received it, honored it, and practiced it.
