Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was on Vulture Peak near the great city of Rajagriha, together with 1,250 great bhikshus. There were also 12,000 bodhisattva-mahasattvas, with Invincible Bodhisattva as their leader.

At that time, the Blessed One said to Maitreya Bodhisattva:

“Maitreya! East of here, beyond Buddha lands as numerous as the motes of dust in hundreds of thousands of millions of ineffable tens, there is a world called Lord of Liberation. In that land is a Buddha named Tathagata Space-Merit, Pure-Dust, Impartial-Eyed and Upright, Meritorious Marks, Radiant Flower, Crimson Lotus, Lapis-Lazuli Light, Fragrant Jeweled Body, Supreme Fragrance, Lofty Offering, Crown Protuberance Adorned in Various Ways, Boundless and Limitless Light of the Sun and Moon, Adorned by the Power of Vows, Adorned by Transformations, Born from the Dharma Realm, Unobstructed King, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. In accordance with whatever beings desire, he now freely practices the Way and teaches the Dharma there.

If a good man or good woman has committed the four grave offenses, then because of that person’s grave offenses, suppose all the earth of Jambudvipa were reduced to dust and each mote of dust became an eon. Even if that person’s offenses accumulated over that many eons, by invoking this Buddha’s name once and bowing once in homage, all those offenses would be completely eradicated. How much more so for one who, day and night, receives, upholds, reads, recites, and remembers it without forgetting! That person’s merit is inconceivable.

In that world there is a bodhisattva named King Unobstructed and Never-Lost. The Tathagata has bestowed upon him the prediction that he will become a Buddha named Tathagata King of Marks, Blazing Light of the Sun and Moon in the Curl-Mark, Jeweled Lotus, Body Firm as Vajra, Pervading Every Place, Unobstructed Eye, Perfectly Filling the Ten Directions, Emitting Light that Universally Illuminates All Buddha Lands; Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Omniscient, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Persons to Be Tamed, Teacher of Devas and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One.

To the east of that world there is also a Buddha named Tathagata Immaculate Light of All Adornments, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the south there is a Buddha named Tathagata Mindful of the Garland of Eloquence, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the west there is a Buddha named Tathagata Renowned King of the Immaculate Moon-Mark, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the north there is a Buddha named Tathagata Producing Light through Floral Adornments, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the southeast there is a Buddha named Tathagata Maker of Lamp-Light, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the southwest there is a Buddha named Tathagata Renowned for the Supreme Jeweled Mark, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the northwest there is a Buddha named Tathagata Fearless Contemplation, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

To the northeast there is a Buddha named Tathagata Fearless, Unintimidated, Whose Pores Do Not Receive Renown, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

Below there is a Buddha named Tathagata Root of the Lion’s Vigorous Advance, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.

Above there is a Buddha named Tathagata Resembling the Majestic King of Golden Light, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened. You should cultivate your minds, invoke that Buddha’s name, and honor and revere him.”

At that time, the Buddha said to Maitreya:

“If a good man of right faith or a good woman of right faith sincerely invokes the names of these twelve Buddhas, then for ten days they should repent of all karmic offenses. They should rejoice in whatever merit all sentient beings possess. They should entreat all Buddhas to remain in the world for a long time. They should dedicate all their roots of goodness universally to sentient beings throughout the Dharma Realm.

At that very moment, all their karmic offenses will immediately be eradicated, all their karmic obstructions will be purified, and they will at once fully accomplish the adornment of all Buddha lands and attain complete fearlessness.

They will also possess all the adornments of the bodily marks, be surrounded by a complete retinue of bodhisattvas, possess immeasurable dharanis and immeasurable samadhis, and fully attain the adornments of Buddha lands according to their wishes.

They will also have immeasurably many spiritual friends and will quickly accomplish the things described above, neither increasing nor diminishing them.

Amid the afflictions, they will cultivate unsurpassed, perfect, and complete awakening, and their appearance will be upright and handsome. How joyous their karmic reward will be! They will also possess abundant wealth and treasures, always be born into honored families, have perfectly endowed bodily marks, and be surrounded by a harmonious retinue.”

At that time, wishing to restate the meaning above, the Blessed One spoke this verse:
