Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the great city of Rajagriha.
At that time, the bodhisattva Jeweled Banner Total Retention addressed the Buddha, saying:
"Blessed One! By what cause and condition does the Great Black Dragon swallow a sharp sword and coil its four legs around the sword?"
The Buddha said to the bodhisattva Jeweled Banner Total Retention:
"In former times, in the city of Knowing Victory of Maheshvara in the Akanishtha Heaven, when Acala Vidyaraja and the non-Buddhists debated with one another, they manifested myriad kinds of supernormal powers to display their talents and wisdom. At that time Acala Vidyaraja transformed into a sword of wisdom-fire.
Then there were ninety-five different orders of non-Buddhists. Their leader was named Zhida, and he too transformed into a sword of wisdom-fire. At that time, the sword of wisdom-fire manifested by Acala Vidyaraja again transformed into the Great Black Dragon, and four great vidyarajas assisted him: Trailokyavijaya, Kundali, Yamantaka, and Vajrayaksha.
On the dragon king's neck there was a lotus named Wisdom-Fire, and upon it was the syllable Kṛkāla. The dragon's body was 100,000 yojanas high. The breath blown forth from his mouth was like 2,000,000,000,000 thunderclaps resounding at the same time. Hearing that sound, the multitudes of non-Buddhists and the mara kings all abandoned their evil doubts and wrong attachments."
The Buddha spoke the mantra:
|| nam mô tất để, tất để, tô tất để, tất để, già la, la da, câu diêm, tham ma, ma tất li, a xà ma, tất để, ta bà ha. ||
"The majestic power of this mantra can eradicate all inauspicious matters and subdue the multitudes of mara kings.
If someone's spiritual vital force is disturbed and afflicted, write down that person's name and recite this mantra twenty-one times; then the spirit will suddenly be burned up.
If anyone single-mindedly recites this mantra, abstains from eating the five pungent foods together with wine and meat, and is not defiled by women, then all that they seek will certainly be fulfilled.
The majestic power and merit of this mantra, even when the season has not yet arrived, can cause trees and plants to bloom, the four seas to become mountains, Mount Sumeru to become an ocean, ice and stone to burn like oil, and the hard protrusions and hollows of a piece of wood to become soft like water. All things will accord with one's intention, just like the Blessed One."
The Buddha again proclaimed the meaning above in verse:
"Any practitioner who cultivates and upholds it
Will be like the Blessed One,
Attaining the supreme right samadhi,
Equal in rank with bodhisattvas.
The great dragon Kṛkāla:
Those who invoke that name
In this present life remove demonic obstacles,
And afterward are born in the Land of Peace and Bliss."
When the Buddha had finished speaking this sutra, all the evil mara kings together with the ninety-five kinds of great dragon kings were greatly delighted, faithfully accepted it, and reverently practiced it.
