At that time the World-Honored One said to Ananda: “I observe immeasurable living beings in the world.
Most create sinful karma and fall into the evil destinies, passing through immeasurable time before they can depart from them.
Even if they are born as humans, their bodies are incomplete. Even if they are complete, they have little merit and inferior wisdom. They are constantly spied upon day and night by evil maras and evil ghosts and spirits, who seek opportunities to cause all kinds of affliction and disturbance, so that they are not at peace.
Out of compassion for this group, I speak the Pranashavari Great Dharani to pacify and remove evil maras and evil ghosts and spirits.
If living beings hear this dharani, give rise to a mind of utmost sincerity, read, recite, and make offerings to it, then those evil maras and evil ghosts and spirits will all be caused to go far away; calamities and harm will be eliminated; there will be no illnesses or impediments; and their dwelling places will be peaceful, secure, pleasant, and joyful.
At that time the World-Honored One then spoke the dharani:

At that time, after Ananda had heard the World-Honored One speak this dharani, he said to the Buddha:
“World-Honored One! Please do not be concerned. I shall remember, preserve, and disseminate it in the world, causing living beings to obtain great good benefit.”
Having spoken these words, he bowed his head and paid homage at the feet of the World-Honored One, then joyfully withdrew.
